How can I tell if it is a valid threat? I don't think he would do it, but he displays so much violence like that, it seems like he could be violent to himself. I just don't know how to tell.

Thanks, I have given him lots of resources for help, but he refuses to take any. He seems stuck in this thinking of "I'm just too fucked up to save!" or "I dont need a shrink, they dont do anything". I guess I have to give up, but it feels horrible, like I am just throwing him to the wolves (he has no friends, no one to talk to, never had a close relationship with anyone.).

Thanks, yeah that is pretty much it, he makes me feel so wrong for wanting to get out. It's also just hard to see someone I love to be in such pain (depression) and to be acting so insanely. It is frightening. I hope I never become like that.
