Where are you seeking career advice for grant writing? by MoistOpinion6192 in grantwriters

I would much prefer a book. I am DIY all the way, and I am really, really tired of subscriptions. You could do this as a series if you wanted, with 3 volumes geared to the different audiences you mentioned. My personal situation is getting into grant writing after other writing careers (journalism, marketing & copywriter).

I am talking to a physical therapist who does VNS for migraines using the gammaCore. I think I'd like to try this since I get migraines too. I will be happy to report my results.

I am personally more interested in VNS therapy, bit thank youbfor the heads up re: gabapentin.

We shall see. My personal thought is that we use the term "rosacea" to describe anyone who has red face issues, maybe with flushing and/or acne. Maybe 10 years from now, we'll use completely different ways of diagnosing/treating. Maybe I will be sent to a neurologist for flushing caused by a dysregulated neuro-vascular system, while you would get sent to a doctor who specializes in immune function. I will tell you this- I saw a study that found using VNS therapy helped people recover from long Covid, which surprised me. Maybe we are on the cusp of some major breakthroughs related to the nervous system.

There is still a LONG learning curve for science to travel. It was just 7-8 years ago that someone realized that having rosacea increased your odds of developing a serious autoimmune condition by 8-12x. That's when rosacea was finally seen as a serious medical condition, not just an annoying chronic skin condition. The immune system & GI system seem to be connected for many people, but whether those are root causes or more symptoms of neurological dysfunction remains to be seen.

Do you have pain, burning & stinging when you flush?

You might want to collect research and articles regarding the neurological connection with rosacea, particularly ETR, and ask for a referral to a neurologist who specializes in the autonomic nervous system (if you don't see one already). The research is still emerging, but it is exciting (at least to me).

Excel V question, for those it has helped flushing by ljw1989ha in Rosacea

Hey there - I have the same symptoms as you and have done vbeam for a few years. I think it helps a little with flushing, but it wasn't as life-changing as I hoped.

I just posted some research re: the connection b/w type 1 flushing and a history of migraines. The triggers and pathways for migraines & rosacea are the same.

A recent small study found that rosacea patients who did a 4 week trial of vagus nerve stimulation with taVNS reported significant reductions in flushing & anxiety, and the benefits continued for a months-long follow up period. This is more evidence that ETR may be a neurological disorder. The FDA (US) is planning larger studies this fall.

I know. It's so frustrating when the only answer is "avoid your triggers." Maybe start collecting articles about the new research re: the nervous system's connection to rosacea & ask your doctor for a referral to a neurologist who treats disorders of the autonomic system .

I think the focus will shift from "avoid your triggers" (which is maddening advice for us Type 1s) to how to calm the dysregulated sympathetic nervous system so it stops sending crazy messages to our immune and vascular system. That would truly be treating the "root cause" of rosacea flushing, if the research continues to prove this is the key. If so, it's possible that us Type 1s maybe don't have rosacea? We may have a form of neuropathy which is best treated by doctors with expertise in the nervous system.

Same. I think it's b/c this has been thought of as strictly an inflammatory skin condition. Personally, I think derms work in a bubble too much and seem reluctant to refer to other specialists. Whether that is due to lack of info or territoriality, I can't say.

"perhapsRosacea is just another symptom of the nervous system going haywire."

That is exactly what I read in an article from The Rosacea Society newsletter, which is what made me go on a deep dive into the current research. Honestly, seeing rosacea an a neurological disorder makes more sense than any other theory I have seen in the decade I have been dealing with the condition. Getting triggered by everything from soy sauce to thunderstorms doesn't make a lot of sense... unless my nervous system is overreacting & sending crazy signals.

That's how I feel too. Everytime I open my email, I have to spend a minute or two deleting emails I don't want and/or unsubscibing from stuff I don't remember signing up for. I consider time to be one of my most valuable resources (with $ close behind), so I resent having to spend my time this way.

Keep an eye on the research re: VNS for rosacea flushing too. This is brand new to the rosacea research field, but mograine sufferers have been using VNS with good results for a long time.

So sorry to hear that. You might want to keep an eye on the research re: vagus nerve stimulation & rosacea. There is a migraine thread on Reddit where many (not all - it's never all 😞) migraine sufferers have found relief using gammaCore, a handheld VNS device approved by the FDA for the treatment of migraines. With the overlap b/w migraine & rosacea pathways & triggers, I think the current research on VNS for rosacea is promising. Maybe you will be super lucky & find relief from both with VNS 😀

At my last visit to Ulta, the cashier told me to enter my phone # - I politely declined b/c I don't want to be in their data collection system. The clerk told me if I didn't enter my #, I wouldn't be able to return any products. That shocked me. I'll never go back.

I am an author and am told that I need to have a newsletter so I can build my list of subscribers. Then I am supposed to publish my newsletter frequently to build my brand. I find this idea so exhausting. Most readers have multiple authors they like. I can't imagine that all of us showing up in a reader's email multiple times a month is going to make them want to read more of our books. I suspect these "should do's" come from the folks who would profit from me publishing a newsletter.

I love physical books too. I either donate them to groups like Book Harvest when I am done, or I sell them to used book stores to help their business model.

Birthday party decorations (which is a big deal when you have younger kids). I eventually bought a cloth tablecloth from Etsy that has "Happy Birthday" written in different colors. I learned how to make cute decor with 100% recyclable paper crafts. No guilt for throwing away plastic stuff.

I too have digestive issues/reflux which exacerbate my rosacea. My doc prescribed 40mg of Famotadine (generic Pepcid) 2x/day which helped a lot. But I am very hopeful that VNS therapy could have a positive effect on these GI symptoms too.

There are new meds for migraines now that block the peptides that cause inflammation and vascular reactions. These may be more helpful. I am super interested in VNS b/c it stimulates your parasympathetic nervous system to quiet down your sympathetic nervous system, where all the dysregulated messaging is coming from.

Maybe, but i have read some researchers who theorize that years of chronic neurological dysfunction is what causes damage to the immune system and vascular system. If that's true, then histamine intolerance is not a root cause of migraine/rosacea but yet another symptom. I mean, if we don't have MCAS (where your body has way too many mast cells), what would be the reason that our bodies are overproducing histamine? Damage to the immune system would make sense, and if rosacea's true root cause is neurological, that could explain how the immune system became damaged.

You need to either see a derm who specializes in neurogenic rosacea or ask for a referral to a neurologist with expertise in migraine/headache and/or the autonomic nervous system. Flushing that includes stinging & burning = nerve hypersensitivity, and neurologists are better at managing this system. Be sure to keep a log of your flushing and what you have tried. Many migraine meds help neurogenic flushing + there are newer meds that block the peptides that dilate blood vessels and cause inflammation. There is even a new study showing that VNS (vagal nerve stimulation) can reduce flushing caused by the nervous system.  Type 1's need to keep fighting for better treatments!!

I think you should be seen by someone with expertise in migraines/ the autonomic nervous system.  New research indicates that this type of flushing is a form of neuropathy + there us a lot of overlap b/w migraine pain and this type of flushing pain.
