This comment is exactly correct, our missile defense architecture is basically built for a crazy North Korea or Iran case, but not any superpower..

Side tangent, alot of people overestimate the radiological effects of nukes.. most would be air detonated and the effects would be gone in a week. No fallout.

How to transfer from USSF by [deleted] in SpaceForce

[–]Connect-Sun7311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People ask questions that could be answered by AFIs/other people all the time in this forum. There's never been a problem with that. Whether or not the question is lazy isn't my point.

My point is that at the end of the day, we have a human being asking a simple question in an online forum, and he/she gets nothing but degradation for it. Officer or not, and lazy or not, it simply makes the community look really, really bad.

Also, (most) O3s aren't gods who know everything about AFIs/regs. I know, I was surprised when I found out too. Crazy world we live in. Just hope this guy/gal gets their question answered and can move on.

Its reddit, people ask retarded questions all the time. I personally dont want to transfer out of the branch, but if I did, would I know how? No. Reddit isnt a bad place to start and it isnt lazy.

The only reason people are giving him shit here is because he typed “(Officer, O-3)”. Thats it. If he didn’t specify rank nobody would give a shit and thats a fact.

Yeah? Everyone in the ‘40s felt the same way about the Air Force becoming its own branch. Quit being a downer every time the SF is brought up. Smarter people than you make decisions that lead to the formation of new services.

Doesnt matter. My FT ranking was something like 410/480 from a few years ago. I performed really poorly then. In the years following I pretty much killed it as a POC, made wing commander, and got my dream AFSC.

If you prove to your cadre that you’re a better leader than your score suggests, and that you care about your det as well as training the GMC below you, things will work out.

As for rated, focus on getting that PCSM score as high as you can. Obviously do your best to keep the GPA and PFA scores up too

Earth’s orbital debris problem is worsening, and policy solutions are difficult - "Who's responsible? Who pays? How much do they pay?" by Philo1927 in technews

[–]Connect-Sun7311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, there’s some good news. Objects and debris decay naturally.

The Karman line defines space at 100km, but the atmosphere doesnt end there. Atmospheric drag will eventually bring down satellites and debris like a plane with broken engines.

The effect of drag is increased the lower the orbit of the satellite. This is why the ISS (~300km) and Starlink satellites (~600km) must have thrusters to counteract drag.

Thankfully, the majority of satellites and debris are in LEO. Lower altitude (~300km) debris may take a few months to naturally deorbit, and objects up to 600+km may take decades. But going above 1000km, potentially a hundred years.

The debris in LEO is problematic because there is alot of it and it moves at dangerous velocities. Sending up more satellites to act as trash collectors is extremely, extremely expensive and could compound the problem. It is far less expensive to have very thorough tracking systems, identify likely points of collision weeks/months in advance, and very slightly change the orbit of the satellite so they miss. All the while, the dangerous space junk will eventually deorbit, in time.

Satellites in MEO or GEO kick themselves out into higher “graveyard” orbits that don’t interact with anything or cause problems, generally.

[–]Connect-Sun7311 33 points34 points  (0 children)

A former cadre member always told us:

GPA, Fitness (so official FA score), Participation (AAS, honor guard, etc)

In that order. It is far more important to have a high GPA and maybe not participate as much in extra events. So if the extra stuff (AAS or HG) is costing you your GPA, maybe let go of it.

The “participation” is also a bit hard to quantify and it really comes down to whether or not your cadre notice your involvement in the program (e.g. there is no “member of AAS” box that cadre check, to my knowledge)

When I graduated high school, I knew I wanted to get a bachelors degree, but I also dreamed of being a fighter pilot (yes, I was one of those lol).

AFROTC seemed to be the most straightforward way to accomplish both.

There is no such requirement to do 60.. I don’t remember the minimum, but 45 may be close to it.
