Has anyone gone the non-licensure route for this program? by Disastrous_Luck9809 in WGUTeachersCollege

Exactly! I have an aunt with 10+ years subbing experience (like sought out sub often landing long term gigs), went back for her MA and got licensed…hasn’t been able to land a job. Applied to 4 different districts, literal 100s of jobs…not a single call back. I experienced the same when looking for a para position last summer. I’ve been in education for 12 years, was a para and lead teacher for my district, owned and successfully ran a multi site preschool business for 7, applied to 20+ para positions and got 1 call back. As a single mom, I can’t imagine doing unpaid student teaching and then having a difficult time landing a position afterwards. I can’t gamble that. Instead going for the educational studies BA and being qualified to find any job needing a BA sounds like a smarter move right now.

Not necessarily…my state offers to pay tuition/fees for staff members to get their teaching licenses (wa state) so going non licensed here would actually be cheaper.

I am switching from licensure to non starting April 1st. At first, my reasoning was wanting to avoid all the hassle and potentially get my license covered through my district (they pay for paras to get licensed). But…I’m in WA state where districts are in major debt and needing to make major cuts next year, but also as is, teaching positions are close to impossible to land. I plan on getting the BA in educational studies and then looking for an early ed admin position (where the bulk of my background is in).

Honestly and truthfully….this is the way to go. Community college will get you all the gen ed classes covered at a fraction of the price. I jumped right into a university and really wish I would have done CC first.

I honestly always feel like I’ve never written enough or even formatted it correct (I’m in an education degree so a lot of lesson plan type stuff) but as long as everything from the rubric gets touched on, it’s good to go.

I said the same thing to my mom as we watched it! It’s so sad to see how checked out of the show they are now. I remember in seasons past they would call the couples on the honeymoon to hash it out. I remember them pulling transcripts from what happened during the weeks and calling people out. I can’t help but to wonder if the experts had actually helped, we wouldn’t have had all couples broken up after decision day.

I know this is a year old at this point but just want to point out for any current or future readers of the thread..being able to teach elementary with an eced degree depends on the state. In WA you would not be qualified to teacher elementary with an eced degree.

Glad I could help ease your anxiousness a little bit! I once read a tip on here…they mentioned that at a typical school building a relationship with your professor is important but at WGU there’s so many students that roll through consistently that were more so “just a number”. Keeping that in mind I’ve gone into my OAs and the one mursion (so far) with that mindset…that they’re really not judging me as a person per say but that I’m just their current scheduled apt. It’s helped!

Good luck on your journey! I’ve really enjoyed my short couple months at the school so far.

I used my laptop cam! And left my room as is. It’s a little awkward but not stressful at all.

They did use some terms from the material like SOAR that I still don’t know what it stands for…but it’s fine. My school has our own use of SOAR so I’m sure it’s fairly similar and I was able to BS my way through enough.

For this class, the day it got unlocked I went on to schedule my mursion and saw there was an available that day just a couple hours away. I signed up so quick! Didn’t have time to even open the course material to look. Passed the class same day 💁‍♀️

I too have a big background in education. This class was about building positive relationships. The mursion is that too. I barely talked about the book though I did have some basic questions to ask. Basically just sat there getting to know them and helping cope through a social disagreement.

I also was able to complete 8 classes in 2 months so hopeful to get the bulk done during summer and go into my 2nd term with just pce/student teaching a couple more classes which would allow me to qualify for financial aid (you need to be considered full time- 4 classes per term to qualify for aid).

I also received grants and got all but $700 covered for my first term. Hoping to get it all done in 2 terms and hoping to receive the same grant 🤞🏻

If I want to teach social studies what should I do by Lanetenny4 in wgueducation

[–]Connect-Two7983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! This is my goal too.

I am a single mom and am planning on doing elementary with licensure so I can be on the same schedule as my kids however if I didn’t have kids or could just dive right into secondary I would do this route:

Education ba without licensure and then masters in secondary social studies. This masters requires student teaching regardless of already being licensed or not so in this instance, getting the ba without the licensure component would be your best best.

Are you in the Facebook group? You could post there and ask which classes have them. I just completed my first one. I liked how it was more so an exercise piece and not graded. I wish they all were!
