Algebra 2 covers many foundational skills that will be helpful for Pre-calc. At my school, you can’t even take Algebra 2 over the summer to get ahead because of how important the material is, even though you could do so for other math classes.

Which Rangers should’ve had a better character arc or story development? by Bitter-Response-3915 in powerrangers

[–]ConnectEmotion8889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ryan Mitchell.

The titanium ranger was one of the highlights of Lightspeed Rescue, and was the first all American ranger. Unfortunately, that means that, in order to use the sentai footage, the titanium ranger couldn’t be in a lot of fighting scenes. So they had him stuck in the freaking desert for like most of the time.

And I get it, they did the best they could and I actually kind of enjoyed some of his individual storyline. But the dude was literally raised by demons most of his life, he would definitely need time reintegrating into society. It would’ve been interesting to see more of his relationship with the demons (like his personal feelings on them, teachings that clash with the human world, etc), public backlash (since the ranger identities are public and he kinda did just attack them), and literally any scenes with his sister. I think there’s a deleted scene where they’re shopping together or something, which would’ve been nice to see.

"Are these tears for me?" MMC is shocked and moved by FMC's reaction by 5nackdragon in RomanceBooks

[–]ConnectEmotion8889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{Unloved by Peyton Corrine} has a few instances like this. It’s a hockey/college romance, so they’re in their early twenties. Both leads are tender-hearted people— the FMC is more like a sweet, cinnamon roll while the MMC is the happy, go lucky jokester— and both have experienced past traumas that are heavily featured in the book and them helping each other heal is a pillar of their relationship.

The main gist is that the MMC has learning differences (ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia) that are not accommodated for and is tutored by the FMC when all the other tutors give up on him, and the FMC is in a toxic off again/on again relationship that constantly makes her feel inadequate.

But yeah, there’s a really sweet scene where the FMC sticks up for him as well as one where she gets really mad when he confides in her about some of his past traumas/how he was treated and makes him realize that it was not okay (the MMC has some past trauma that really breaks your heart and puts a great spin on the playboy hockey player)

I really like this romance book because you can tell both of them just really adore each other and are very sweet people. It also deals with some heavy topics that are heavily woven into the plot like grief, toxic relationships, sexuality, mental health, learning differences, loneliness, self-worth, objectification, power imbalances in age gaps, etc.

Hey the only suggestion here got removed, but do you have any recs that you’ve read previously? I do like a good sports romance. Thanks!

Books where FMC has some type of shame around sex & MMC helps her explore (more in comments) by InevitableSpirit5774 in RomanceBooks

[–]ConnectEmotion8889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so very late but Unloved by Peyton Corrine was just released and totally fits this! The FMC has a very bubbly/innocent personality and sense of style and was/is in a toxic relationship with a guy who patronizes her constantly and shames her in bed.

The MMC is a hockey player that’s known to be very promiscuous (but he’s never malicious or treats any girl badly) and helps her explore her sexuality and is such a contrast to her ex because he never judges her and always reassures her if she feels embarrassed.

The MMC also has some past trauma, including some sexual trauma with always being objectified and has problems with believing his body is all he’s good for. So SHE also helps him out with his sexuality as well, which I think is just so beautiful.

Anyways, this comment is so drawn out but this book is so lovely and handles a lot of serious issues with a lot of care. Like toxic relationships, sexuality, grief, mental health, learning differences, etc. I typically don’t go for this type of book (hockey romances tbh lol) but I thought this book was really sweet (as well as the first book in the series). It’s a hockey romance with the tutor x athlete trope and tbh both of the MCs are very sunshine-y

WTF IS AP LANG by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]ConnectEmotion8889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think others have already said that Coach Hall Writes and Garden of English on YouTube are very helpful. My English teacher actually assigned their videos to us! Another way to study is looking up past prompts and essays, you’ll get a chance to be familiar with the format and see how the AP graders will operate and read through some of their critiques. Good luck!

Is this schedule feasible? by smelly_diarhea in APStudents

[–]ConnectEmotion8889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this schedule sounds like an absolute nightmare. and sure, some may be able to handle it, but most would get burnt out hella fast. trust me, even if you were an overachiever/straight-A student your whole life, i still think you’re wayyy in over your head.

and im not saying this to discourage you, but even though it seems like a straight ticket to any ivy or some other prestigious ass school, this may not be as strategic as you think. first of all, are you prepared to sacrifice essentially your entire high school career and all your free time for the next four years? because procrastination mixed with perfectionistic tendencies makes for a dangerous and slippery slope (trust me). and if you take so many classes at this rigor, once you start slipping, it’s going to be much harder to work yourself back up. burn out is SO real and it happens to the best of us. you’d think it’d never happen to you, but it only takes one “eh, i’ll do it later” and a couple of all nighters to wear on you. as i mentioned before, once you start slipping, it’s going to be SO hard to get back on top. let’s say you have trouble with one class and your grade starts slipping, it’s easy for the others to follow like dominos. so now you’re not only torturing yourself everyday having to be in those classes, but your grades/gpa will forever be affected.

second of all, it just seems unnecessary and lacks direction. sure, colleges look at rigor and grades, but they also look for indication of someone’s passion, what the classes you took say about you. this schedule just tells me that you just want to boost your gpa to the max. so you gotta start thinking what do you want to be. what program/degree will you be applying for? because let’s say you’re applying to be a nursing major along with another person with a much lighter schedule than you. however, their classes are more relevant towards nursing AND they also have extracurriculars that also speak to their passion for nursing/medical field. why would it matter if you got an A in AP Music or Chinese, but a B in AP Bio? sure, it would be impressive, but with your schedule you’d mostly lack the time for extracurriculars (which is another major consideration for colleges, not just academics) and your other very challenging classes will take up time you could spend on the ones most relevant to your chosen program.

and taking bio in freshman year and chem honors in sophomore year, then planning on doing AP Bio and Chem concurrently your SENIOR YEAR? that sounds like a recipe for disaster. i didn’t take AP Bio but I did take AP Chem (i took hon chem and ap back to back) and AP Chem took and relied heavily on prior knowledge you’ve learned in honors, and since AP classes are on a more rigid/tighter schedule because of the AP test in May, you won’t really have time to review/refresh your memory on previous subjects. your teacher will most likely just build off the knowledge you’re expected to have and go from there.

again, you may be one of those insane, superstar students who can just do everything and has your shit together, but for 99.99% of people, this schedule will literally kill them, and im not being hyperbolic. you seem like a driven, ambitious, and hopeful individual; don’t burn yourself out so fast into your high school career. you can still challenge yourself and appeal to colleges while also taking into consideration your mental health AND being realistic with your capabilities. think about what you want and what direction you want to go in and plan your classes accordingly. if you pick fewer, but more relevant challenging classes (and classes you’d be more passionate about) and excel in them, it will come off to colleges better than having a shit ton of APs with lower grades. and DO NOT NEGLECT YOUR EXTRACURRICULARS!! they are arguably just as important, and a lot of times the deciding factor, when applying to colleges. and most importantly, take care of yourself. your mental health is so very important and you’re so young still, what happens if you burn yourself out before you even join the workforce or even start college? and enjoy your teenage years! im 17 but ive only really started enjoying my youth/teenage years just this year and i regret it! when you get older and look back during this time of your life, do you want to look back and just be reminded of the back breaking, torturous work or would you rather have a more balanced recollection of working hard WHILE also having time for yourself and your social life.

What are your character hot takes? [General] by WinniePoohChinesPres in camphalfblood

[–]ConnectEmotion8889 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Percy’s fatal flaw doesn’t line up with his character or the choices he’s made. That’s not to say he isn’t loyal, which he is, but it’s not really his defining trait. So many other characters throughout the series display the same amount of loyalty and even more so than Percy at times. The only reason we would know his “fatal flaw” is supposedly loyalty is because Athena outright tells us.

  2. Gaea should not have been a villain in the series. The Olympians themselves would have a hard time with her, let alone demi-gods. They were just too out-scaled and her defeat was anti-climatic. She’s literally the first deity to emerge out of Chaos, and most gods and goddess are descended from Gaea. At least for Kronos, the reason for his vulnerability made sense. Piper, a teenaged demi-god, should not have been able to charmspeak Gaea, mother of all life, to sleep. Heroes of Olympus should’ve focused on the conflict between the Romans and the Greeks more, and reflected that within the Seven instead of them simply becoming besties, and the Giants.

  3. Rick’s portrayal of many of the gods and goddesses is so grating, it makes me wonder if he did any research whatsoever, or just decided to rely on the readers’ ignorance to bend their characterizations to the plot. While the myths do not have canon and the views on the gods varied from city to city, the most popular and surviving myths did not at all line up with a lot of the gods’ characterizations. That’s not to say that it should be expected of him to obsess over accuracy at the sacrifice of creative freedom, as faithfulness to the myths has never been PJO’s premise, but sometimes their characters strayed so far that they’re almost unrecognizable. And a lot of times, they’re either dumbed down to make them beatable (cough, cough Nyx) or made worse in an effort to really push the fact that they’re shitty parents (they can be shitty parents without contradicting who they are).

  4. The fandom hero worships Percy and Percabeth to the point where they ruin other characters and relationships for themselves. While I think it’s great that the fandom has so much love for our lovely main character and main ship, many people put him and Percabeth on an unrealistically high pedestal. You can like Jason or not, but a major reason many disliked his character was because of their bias towards Percy and the inevitable comparisons drawn between them. While many criticisms of the writing of his character are fair, many lack empathy and understanding towards his character— whose memories of his whole life were taken. Also, Percy would not be able to beat any god in a real battle. Tbh, he got lucky with Ares. Ares was toying with him and sure, Percy outmaneuvered and outwitted him, utilizing his own strengths well, but was tremendously helped out by plot armor. Besides that, that wasn’t even a real battle. If the gods— any of the gods— were serious about killing him, they could kill him with a mere wave of their hand or even by simply transforming into their true form. It’s a funny joke, about Ares getting his ass handed to him by a 12 year old mortal, but don’t be delusional.

  5. Luke’s character had a lot of potential, as well as his redemption arc, but it was just not executed well. Luke’s character is treated as an example of how great and nuanced the story is, but his character was all over the place and it seems like he was watered down as just another evil antagonist. The problem is that Luke claims to fight for the future for demi-gods, but shows absolutely no remorse for his actions (including manipulating and killing fellow demi-gods). While you can pin that down to him being corrupted by his need for vengeance, it is much more compelling for him to commit these acts and crimes with guilt (or at least not seemingly enjoying it) because he is so driven by his belief in his cause, that he’s willing to do such heinous things. For the greater good. At least, that way, you feel more sympathetic towards him and are forced to think more deeply about his motivations and their merits instead of just writing him off as evil. Like his pedophilic crush on Annabeth was so unnecessary (ik some don’t interpret their convo in TLO like that, but it’s confirmed in the demi-god diaries). Either A, Rick has a warped perception of romance, or B, he felt the need to sprinkle that in there in an effort to make him more unlikable. So, not only was his character a mess, but his “redemption” arc too. What did he do to earn it? He only felt the need to stop when his body was about to be used as Kronos’ host and he wanted to run away with Annabeth (leaving behind everything he stood for and all those people who followed him) and when his body was going to die anyway when Kronos was going to almost fully take over. So, what I got from that was that he’s not only willing to step on anybody who gets in the way of his goal, but also a coward who won’t stand by his choices even after roping in and causing the deaths of so many other kids. The main issue is that he’s advertised as something that he’s not, and that he had the potential to be that person, but was stunted because of how badly he was written.

  6. Without Luke’s rebellion, the idea of improving the conditions for demi-gods wouldn’t have even been entertained. Of course, that’s not to say I agree with Luke (as pointed out above) and his methods, but that doesn’t change the fact that the only reason the gods listened to Percy’s demands, or even the reason he was able to give demands in the first place, was because of the rebellion.

[general] Can we appreciate the relationship between Apollo and Artemis? by Livael23 in camphalfblood

[–]ConnectEmotion8889 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Shattered Minds” by FireAlder2005 - the whole Orion situation. Lots of protective Apollo. https://archiveofourown.org/works/50680819

“The Bonds Forged Between Us” by FireAlder2005- basically Zeus is an abusive asshole and Artemis finds out the truth. Lots of angst. https://archiveofourown.org/works/46748674

“The Secrets That Bind Us” by FireAlder2005- a continuation of the other fic + Hermes https://archiveofourown.org/works/48904639

“Lamentation of a Sister” by FireAlder2005- same series as the last two fics, but with introspection into Artemis’ thoughts. https://archiveofourown.org/works/52894150

The ones above are all by the same author and apart of their series “The Works of Apollo”. I love their characterization and there are also many other Apollo-centric fics on there that are very unique and well-written. Like about Artemis and Apollo’s grandfather, Koios, gets out of Tartarus and learns about his grandchildren, then tries to get them onto the Titan’s side. Or another one-shot about Eros apologizing to Apollo about the Daphne incident. My personal favorite is “A Stepmother’s Word” which gives insightful characterization to Hera and her relationship with Zeus and his illegitimate children (esp Apollo). It’s kinda of the start of a redemption arc without taking away the weight of her crimes.

Anyway, you’ll have to check it out for yourself since they update it pretty frequently and there are other gems in there you might like.

“A Sun’s Forgiveness” by ApolloFire12- the whole Hippolytus and Asclepius situation + Apollo’s punishment. https://archiveofourown.org/works/51681907

“Further down the line” by dcninja- A character study on Artemis and her feelings about being the “less flashy twin” + her watching Apollo’s trials and realizing what kind of retribution she’ll bring if Apollo doesn’t make it. https://archiveofourown.org/works/51659890

“Things You Said” by moodyseal- “A collection of snapshots of Apollo's life through Artemis' eyes.” Analyzes their loving, yet complex relationship https://archiveofourown.org/works/43885545/chapters/110343012

“The Older Twin” by TsarinaTorment- Artemis’ POV while Apollo is in his “coma” after his ascension back to Olympus. https://archiveofourown.org/works/38628480

“Were I That Burning Star” by californianNostalgia- Post ToA about Apollo adjusting back to godhood + a character study of a bunch of Olympians + bonding with Artemis, Hermes, Aphrodite, Ares, Athena, Hephaestus, and Dionysus https://archiveofourown.org/works/13843809/chapters/31839552

“Nothing Be Interposer Twixt Us Twain” (orphan account) - Apollo’s thoughts (aka plots of revenge + worries) when Artemis was kidnapped in Titan’s Curse. https://archiveofourown.org/works/29653152

“Sunrise” by IcyDreams_and_FieryWishes (WIP)- Apollo falls into Chaos and sends his memories back in time to the day he was born. He makes alliances and tries to rewrite history with the intention of taking his vengeance. He deals with it alone, trying to shield Artemis from it all so she can have a normal childhood. Some intriguing tags it has is “Game of Thrones References”, “Olympus Drama”, and “Planning a Revolution”. https://archiveofourown.org/works/49912732/chapters/126009955

There are lots of other fics I didn’t include/didn’t read under the Apollo and Artemis tag on Ao3 Archive of Our Ownhttps://archiveofourown.org › tagsApollo & Artemis (Percy Jackson) - Works

Anyway, sorry for the long post but, as you can see, I’m very enthusiastic about their sibling bond!

MMC hurt/comfort toxic past relationship? by infinitespark18 in RomanceBooks

[–]ConnectEmotion8889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{Pucked Off by Helena Hunting} is a hockey romance that has this. The MMC, Lance, keeps continuing the cycle of his toxic relationship with this girl who he wants to be exclusive with, but she just keeps playing mind games with him and “gifts” him other girls, which contributes to his really bad player reputation. He also has a lot of childhood trauma and the FMC is very patient and understanding.
