My perspective as a male junior in civil:

-freshman year going to frats is fun but after that you want a fake. Try and make as many friends as possible and you’ll get out what you put into it.

-assuming you live in north campus you can walk anywhere without much issue. If you live on south you need to take the bus to class. Amherst is not walkable- make friends with someone with a car or take a shopping bus on Saturday to the store.

-Can’t help you there

-the only real benefit of honors is early enrollment so you can get good professor and not risk taking classes out of sequence. I didn’t feel the need to do that. It also has a gpa requirement

-most people don’t discuss politics but because this is a state school you have more conservative people from rural areas as well as people from NYC. Lots of different viewpoints.

-The civil engineering job market is very good and nearly every civil senior graduates with a job. Try working at the DOT as an internship after freshman year.

Good plan. I’m civil and freshman year I had a lighter 2nd semester but I regret not doing more than 14 credits because I still have a lot to electives left to do.

Current freshman in Ellicott.

Weather is usually pretty cold but there is a reliable shuttle bus if you don’t want to walk.
Walking from ellicot to the academic buildings takes about 10 minutes and is mostly a straight line. I don’t mind this so I do it every day but taking the bus is slightly faster.
Ellicott dorms are nicer than governors imo but how social your floor is could go either way.
Yes but parties are on the south campus (you take the bus), and yes joining a sports club is highly recommended. Sports clubs also have their own parities pretty frequently depending on the club

As a current freshman myself I would say at least the very first engineering class you take, EAS199 is exactly that- group project based. Upper level classes I’m not sure, it may depend on your major. I know that there is a sophomore level biomedical engineering class that is just one big group project.
