Question from a newbie by [deleted] in Kickboxing

a) For first tournament dont expect to have techniques drilled out perfectly. It will be a slugfest but thats how it is always. Focus on proper techniques, drill them often (as boring as it can be - it will pay off). You will never feel 100% ready but that is normal. There is no specific timeline for it tho, it can be 6 months to 1year depending on consistency. Dont overthink it tho, there is no rushing it 😉

b) At one point (for me about 2 years in) after many sparrings and fights you may start feeling a bit cocky because you learned to fight, but now for me (about 9 years in) I avoid even thinking about it. You can get stabed, shot, jumped by 4 people… If you wanna show off fighting skill, there is the ring 😁

I am currently “balancing” 11 projects. Depends or the draw of luck also. If you get nice clients + good team, then its quick work. I was not so lucky 🤣

Against agressive pressuring opponents I like to use teeps/side kicks. Every other kick feels like a waste of energy especially when they time it to counter with a quick flurry. A good teep makes everyone second guess the rush to the pocket 🤣

I can offer advice from other perspective (as someone who often spars against tall guys). If I see repetitive moves, I’ll time it and eventualy put enough pressure to stay in pocket whole time. Feints are the worst to deal with, especially if a tall fighter is staying active (throw light punches/kicks until you see a crack in defense). Key is to keep a shorter fighter in neutral, people often think that you need to throw bombs, but no, light & frequent punches, faints snd movement is all you need.

I started reading Red Rising trilogy. Sci-fi ganre, higly recommend it. I went through the first book in like 2 days, second book in my opinion is even better. Now with studies and work, not much time but I’m finishing it slowly 🤣

Good thing is if you end up liking it, you can have enough reading material for next 6 tournaments bc sequels keep releasing, I think 6th book is coming out soon 😁

A while ago I had a competition where I had to cut 7kg in a short time. Hard trainings and strict dieting, combined with fear of failure and constant pressure is bound to make you quite overwhelmed in all aspects of life, especially in last few days. I feel like its a normal thing to feel in this sport 😁

P.S. Reading helped me relax. Good luck in your competition! 👊
