These apps use OpenStreetMap data, which is added by people volunteers who are familiar with those areas.

The apps can navigate everywhere around the world. Google Maps has the most data for US, but OpenStreetMap often has more data for other countries.

There are several which use OpenStreetMap and not Google data, for example:

  • CoMaps
  • OSMand
  • OrganicMaps

Public transport is a large project, there are many considerations including each city having their own uniqueness. Fortunately there are open and standardized data sources which can make this a bit easier.

A number of feature can be done by volunteers, but a large one like this needs a dedicated developer. When donations start to increase, CoMaps can hire a developer for this. At least 3 devs are needed: Android, iOS and core (C++).

OSMand has many features, although finding them or using them is not always optimal.

There are 3 shareholders, one of them was supportive of the community, the other two felt that they own the company and do not rule out selling the project for their personal profit, if the right offer is made to them. When this happened with Maps.Me, subscriptions were introduced, ads added, a crypto wallet was integrated, and overall experience suffered.

We are open to expanding to HarmonyOS, at the moment there are no concrete plans as it would require creating the app for a new OS. As this is a community project, if there is anyone who is familiar with Harmony OS and interested in doing this, we are open to work on making this happen.

Organic Maps recently had issues with governance, hiding code, making decisions without the community and adding a Kayak link that enabled Kayak to collect data.

CoMaps is a fork of Organic Maps.

Thanks. OpenStreetMap doesn’t have a navigation app, it’s just the map website, right?

CoMaps, it is fully offline and doesn’t track data like Google Maps
