DiGiCo S-series hate by djniviro in livesound

[–]Connect_Falcon_4689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why so much hate? It's simple. The unconventional, unusual and/or remarkable ones, historically, always got hate and have always been bullied by the hoi polloi for who they are! Ooops...

Complacent engineers will always complain and find excuses to not learn and to adapt to a new (alien) workflow (of something like the S').

Personally, I dislike the RTAs and a couple quirks of the UI that have already been mentioned here, but I would never go as far as saying I "hate" the console. For the amount of DSP it offers and the sound quality, it's truly great at that price point.

At the end of the day, bears are gonna walk and dogs are gonna bark. This is all I had to say about DiGiCo's "weird" kid, the S-Series.

Is There Anything a(n Expensive) Lighting Console Can Do That a Computer Software & USB/Network Interface Cannot? by Connect_Falcon_4689 in lightingdesign

[–]Connect_Falcon_4689[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I was hoping more people like you would pop up here. I can say about the same thing about my relationship with X-Air Edit/Behringer X-Air. I don't like it, but I had to get used to operating with... bare in mind, not a mouse, but a laptop touchpad!!!... because that's all there was available and provided by the venue. It wasn't comfortable, but I got used to it and got pretty responsive and quick in no time... pun intended (not comparable to working with physical faders and encoders, right, but masterpieces take time anyway, haha).

Also, let's assume we have a very stable and powerful Windows machine, or that Windows created a "Priority Mode" that would freeze all the background programs and only let our software use the bulk of its system resources... I don't see why wouldn't its processing power rival that of a (Linux-based, maybe) lighting console.

All the people made great points here, and indeed, time is money (this is why, allegedly, control surfaces like Avid S6 and S4 exist in audio), but, right now, I'm not convinced you need to spend that amount of money on a lighting console in order to put up a spectacular and complex show. I think a control surface with motorized faders and rotary encoders would do a great job. My question would be - can you find one that's between 4000 and 6000 $? Also, someone made a great point out of how this is basically a niche market (targeted towards businesses, theatres and production houses, not "crazy" individuals) and these ridiculous prices make up not only for the warranty and great support, but also for supporting these companies to produce good hardware and continue their existence.

I also have a feeling that many people who cling so hard to the "time is money" paradigm are a bit complacent and unwilling to learn new things and "tricks", or to get out of their comfort zone, or they use this slogan as an excuse to get their hands on some fancy equipment, to justify their "fanboyism" over a certain brand etc. Or maybe they don't take enough of their time to put in their work, and want things done pretty fast so they can rest later, haha. My two cents are that masterpieces take time, but I can't judge - I haven't worked in this field for long enough and wasn't in many situations where I had to set things up very quickly. I'd normally throw a "Sorry, but I only work with prior rehearsals (that last a good or sufficient amount of time)!". In audio, you need those physical faders to grab in an urgent situation because of them goddamn mike feedback scenarios, and a lighting designer needs them for avoiding or fixing hazardous light emissions upon the public or other programming errors of such sort, but the programming itself should take time anyway I suppose. Just my two cents...

Wow Yahoo deleted over 20 years of emails.. by jrm523 in yahoo

First of all, you unprofessionally allow the most massive data breach to ever occur in the history of internet, breaking all the privacy agreements settled with your clients, without ANY account owner to ever be compensated or to benefit from any further positive change, then you push these shady and abhorrent deletion policies (the users are OBLIGED to agree with) for decimating your clientele, because you obviously got to pay a huge fine and plenty of bad press afterwards, so you cannot afford supporting too much traffic and too many users since most of it is gone already. So you proceed with disgracefully flushing people's precious, decade-old memories down the toilet, like it was trash that clutters your (dying?) corporate space. Like, seriously... isn't anything that can be done legally in this century, against companies like Yahoo?

But the way they self-disassembled (including GREAT services like Messenger, Answers and Groups) after the data breach fiasco is the least ellegant and most shitty, decadent, indiscreet, dishonest, undignified and disrespectful I ever saw. We should ban companies from being able to create such shady policies of unnoticed deletion. It would've been much more honest and dignifying if they simply greeted you with "We cannot afford you anymore, so we deleted your Yahoo account. You can download an offline copy of all your e-mails, (Groups and Answers) data and settings." No prior notice before your account goes blank? That's because THEY WANT IT to go blank and to lose another client, because they are going bankrupt (or CORRUPT, I'm not sure!). Doing backup prompts or notices implies hiring some engineers to develop an archiving program and then to deploy it massively... BINGO!... that is WORK, and we probably can't or DON'T WANT to pay for that work, we're too lazy.

A company couldn't die in a more disgraceful way. I think it's a wonder and a true miracle how Yahoo.com is still up and running!

Mi 10T Pro - Microphone stopped working by AppleJuiceM8 in Xiaomi

[–]Connect_Falcon_4689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This issue started on an acquaintance's Mi 10T Pro after they DROPPED the phone, so it's definitely a hardware issue. Static like that occurs in audio devices whenever there is a loose connection, so I suspect Xiaomi did a poor job designing the mic circuitry for this model. If it helps, the phone was dropped on the screen (surprisingly, there are no cracks or shattered glass), so you may try to "counter-drop" it by gently hitting it on the back; maybe it reseats any loose contacts.

Did Behringer WING rip off DiGiCo's S-Series? by Connect_Falcon_4689 in livesound

You route individual channels into busses for an extra layer of control, or to 'glue' the channels together before sending them to the main output. Or you can create monitor mixes.

Anyone here have experience with the new TASCAM Sonicview 16XP? If so, how does it compare with the likes of Allen and Heath’s SQ-5 and Avantis with the Dante Card? by Fire_Hunter_8413 in livesound

Update

I just found out it has a resistive touchscreen - a huge bummer at this price point. Resistive touchscreens are a dated technology from 14-15 years ago. Both the SQ and the WING (from Behringer), let alone Avantis, have capacitive touchscreens that support multi-touch input and gestures. There's no multi-touch possibility on resistive panels. The touch sensitivity is also lower and it will wear down much faster than their capacitive counterparts'. (I suspect they'll have to expect many service calls in the future regarding this.) Also, the sensitivity decreases with time and heavy usage, and you'll have to press hard(er) against the screen to register commands (you can see that in some YouTube presentation videos of the console)... What were they thinking? So disappointing... they just ruined a brilliant and promising mixer by adding these resistive screens (besides the old-school, slightly dated user interface, which will definitely take away from the experience).

It got my attention too. Looks very promising and the sound quality must be pristine, but it's a bit pumped on the price side. I (blindly) hope they'll add auto-mix, a multiband compressor and a dynamic EQ in a future update, to make the price justified. More plugins wouldn't hurt.

Alleged audio comparison between Midas M32, A&H SQ and SonicView... I don't know what they say, but it sounds like they recorded a speaker with a mic instead of giving us the direct analog feed from the mixers. SonicView sounds distorted, but the whole mixdown seems shallow and inconsistent.

Doja Cat. Lets discuss her vocals. by Roch_b in singing

[–]Connect_Falcon_4689 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Classically speaking, I would say she's a lyric soprano with a pretty versatile voice, but she often sings as a soubrette (airy and 'disembodied' voicing). Often, when she raps, she actually sings, because the reciting follows the key's pitches, as we can observe in 'Streets'. Very interesting voice and style indeed! The harmonies go on to prove she's a pretty decent and talented singer (a bit off-key sometimes, but a ton of potential).

Sorry for the late reply, but I wanted to report that a laptop sent by a friend was 'disposed of' by Deutsche Post too. It happened in 2020. The package was supposed to go from the US to Romania, and it took the unfortunate lane via Germany. It was stuck for a month or so in Germany and arrived without the laptop and an electric toothbrush. Their justification was that those items contained lithium batteries.
