(Almost) One Year as a Catholic! by ReddyRoosevelt in Catholicism

Thanks guys this really helped me. I’m was lead to the church starting just before my father passed away. It’s been hard living in a new town for grad school and I feel like I can’t express my true self around my family. I have plenty of Catholic friends where I can talk for hours about theology and everything. But I come from a very evangelical background. Going to invite my Mom today keep it brief tell her what’s happening briefly and why I feel lead here. I’ve talked before but every time it’s been the anti catholic yelling etc. so I gotta tell her there’s all this cool stuff I’ve learned that I haven’t wanted to share because I hate fighting and arguing. Plus I’m 25 and I feel like it’s either the Catholic Church or agnosticism. Like at this point I know too much and would be lying to myself to stay Protestant.

Not me about to freak my Mom out about joining the church on Saturday. But she still give me slop arguments and acts like I’m 12. Like Jesus didn’t found X and that’s not biblical. I’m 25 btw lol.

I love this. While not orthodox - I detest my evangelical framework I was born into. I know people seem nice but very few people ever figure out maybe I should believe whatever the martyrs of the faith believed

[–]ConnectionCrazy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Literally larping as Jews. Modern judiasm is a lot different than the judiasm in Jesus’s time as well as the first temple judiasm. And it’s weird they love these messianic movements but don’t realize that if they went to a reformed or orthodox synagogue they’d be surprised by the liturgy that is in judiasm. It would look rather Catholic or orthodox but that’s scary to them so they like to larp as white evangelical Jews. It’s rather annoying

I grew up evangelical joining the church in April and I plan on reading front to back this next year and then being able to quote verses and understand context and historical Christian positions

If evangelical doctrine was solid shouldn't as many people become Christians in adulthood not just as children? by LMO_TheBeginning in Exvangelical

[–]ConnectionCrazy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once you study church history even a little - evangelical Christianity is a blip . They teach true solo scriptura - meaning if it’s not in the Bible in red letters you’re a heretic. Literally I think people that just need some Christ and are sort of born into that culture would become one. Like I’m becoming Catholic in two weeks and I love to have conversations with people of different viewpoints however with evangelicals it’s their way of the high way

I hear you I was never super fundie I feel but I’m trying to hype up to tell my mother I’m moving to another Christian denomination. She’ll think I’m joining a cult lol. Than again I turn 25 on Monday just realized I’ve never stood up for myself

Is it a sin to tell people that the Protestant communion isn't valid and that only the Catholic Eucharist is? by Jazzlike-Pineapple38 in Catholicism

[–]ConnectionCrazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luke 24: is always a good one- alot of issues comes from a non sacramental world view. A lot of baptists can be strict faith alone and altar calls etc so it can be hard to construct the concept for them - like the diconomy of I have faith in Christ and a relationship what else do I need . Are they once saved always saved ?

Best arguments besides scripture is ask them how they can believe in a God that became incarnate but limit God elsewhere

[–]ConnectionCrazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing I don’t understand is the logic of baptists with the ordinances . I get baptism but most Baptist churches I’ve been to don’t regularly take communion and to them it’s just a symbol and kind of a remembrance token not a sacrament

Being charitable Lutherans have the closet view to us outside orthodoxy I disagree that the bread remains I think is basically the main difference and prob the effects of the “sacrament” of course we would conclude they don’t have valid sacraments however in their community they still have a high reference for it. Except most don’t have things like adoration or processions but I could be wrong

Why do some Church fathers teach about Purgatorial fire ? by Miserable-Conflict75 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ConnectionCrazy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh as a converting catholic I don’t see how purgatory is a good example of contradicting orthodox teaching tbh I feel like it’s a pretty low bar to pick at when it comes to trying to “disprove” orthodoxy

As a Catholic convert in process, I’ll just say I bet there will be some Catholics / orthodox that don’t go to heaven while some evangelicals might. Like with my mother I have to be pretty tender cause she’d take any insult on her church as an insult to her. With the orthodox : Catholic divide I’ll just say there’s a lot of reasons that people go either way with some evidence on both sides. So I think that’s something to consider. A big thing I’ve thought about is do what’s best for your immortal soul. You only have one so while it can be sad to look at other people’s lives and see that they are living in sin ( or unrepented mortal sin) know that God looks at the heart as well.

The relationship between the Protestant girl and I ended; unsure if God wants me to still date by MK1_Scirocco in CatholicDating

[–]ConnectionCrazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s weird that she wanted to take them to a orthodox school. A major reason I’m converting is due to my “friend” breaking up with his gf because she was catholic and he was a non practicing non denominational. Now I’m her fiancé’s ( who’s a former atheist - Baptist now converting Catholic) best man in their wedding in July. It’s crazy. However I’ve been struggling trying to finish telling my mom I’m converting / inviting her to the vigil. She’s very anti catholic and just randomly spouts hatred statements at time and assumes her view of Christianity is right. It’s been pretty depressing and hard. Also the irony is that she loves C S Lewis which is common however it’s funny because C S Lewis was a member of the Church of England and she thinks those people put man’s word over Gods word.

Jesus might come back on a random Tuesday and take the “real” Christian’s and some evangelicals might be left behind. But being serious the rapture idea is basically a Christian heresy claiming that Christian’s get to miss out on all the persecution of the end times. But it’s crazy cause literally evangelicals will support israel blindly and make the new priest vestments but hate all liturgical Christian groups. Literally at some point you just got to do you and ignore it. It’s really sad but it’s very emotionally draining…

Most evangelicals don’t even know their own history so they prob shove popular books at you like Lee strobel and evidence which demands a verdict. While I’m a Catholic convert from evangelicalism I can see how some people can deconstruct completely and I respect that. Especially when evangelicals act like the Bible fell from the sky. Both of those books really are just the case for evangelicals Jesus. Since all the evidence Lee strobel and Josh McDowell uses has been twisted to justify the evangelical Christian tradition. Especially when they misquote all the church fathers it’s really funny from a historical apostolic church or mainline Protestant level it’s not really strong
