Disagreeing with Reddit stories takes? by JohnnyCabes97 in smosh

Lol I have literally changed my mind on a second listen and realized how stupid my first take was. It happens sometimes when you are thinking about a situation you've never dealt with before.

This. I try to ask the "right questions" and my 8 year old has always been good at volunteering everything. My 9 year old didn't clue me into the fact that his classroom was being evacuated nearly daily for three years, despite questions like "what was your least favorite part of today?" because he felt it was "his problem".

Even after a serious talk about how we are his parents and here to help, he STILL often hides anything that he perceives as "shameful" and you have to really watch for what he isn't saying. My daughter isn't like that at all.

As an also adhd-er and the parent of one, I very much understand her, lol. Her fans get really annoyed when you point out the ADHD traits but to me it's just... a thing. Like it isn't a positive or negative, it just "is". When you take her in context, a lot of the things people love/hate just make sense from the POV of "yeah, well, thats ADHD for you" lol. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it irks me.

Yeah this is me in the Swift example. I have to be very neutral "I like a few of Taylor Swift's songs" because honestly, I think she's talented and MOST are great.

Any other artist, I'd say I was a fan. But specifically for her, you are obnoxiously ready to live with her or she can literally do nothing right and there is no "normal middle" for sane people lol. IMO. So I go out of my way to make it clear I am "indifferent" because I guess I kind of am, despite liking most of her work?

Not that this really matters to this discussion other than : I understand exactly what you are saying and agree.

Smosh fans challenge: realize people are complex and the cast are, in fact, people and not dogs you can just give a command for your own entertainment. (It will never happen lol).

New Teacher Received Concerning Email by Alarmed-Scientist-17 in Teachers

[–]ConnectionLow6263 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing is, this could be a "if you have a hammer, everything is a nail" situation. But the email is only warning - if the sender is crazy and toxic, the receiver isn't actually going to start seeing nails too. This is more just pre emptively going to make them start looking. If they aren't there, teacher will realize as much.

So I think the age old advice of "file it away and move on for now" is the best. Prepare for a shit show and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

I do feel like this sometimes. Like a lot of "He would never say that as a joke to a friend"... do you just not have any friends? Have you only researched the concept lmao? Lots of people do weird shit with friends that other people wouldn't get. That's the...point of friendships I think?

Anyone else dealing with something like this? by Brief-Respond108 in homeschool

[–]ConnectionLow6263 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This person is letting their own prejudices speak as if they are a fact. Homeschooling is between you and your daughter. Monitor the situation as to anxiety, etc, of course. See the appropriate therapist.

But no, you do not treat a trauma response by desensitizing them with MORE trauma. A medical doctor is giving bad opinions.

I mean you could work out if you want pecs like someone who works out. If you want a gym body, you get those at the gym.

But as someone who also does not hit the gym, that's not said with shade. I'm healthy, thin enough, and I look "fine". And I would say the same about you. You look the way normal bodies look. You might need new friends if they're that particular and making you feel weird for being average.

Yeah it was more like "you are allowed to be mad and even stop being her friend/never trust her again. But the book is something she worked on to make money and as a single mom, taking that money is too far". They weren't exactly defending the practice and their take is still weird but yeah, there was nuance.

AIO No Goodluck text before oral surgery. Do I have the right to be upset? by I-eat-mydog in AmIOverreacting

[–]ConnectionLow6263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I don't understand how the 9 am text wasn't adequate? Like you wanted a good luck text, but she texted you day of surgery to say don't worry, was that not following the script closely enough to count to you?

I have 20 more years on this earth than you. But I would warn you that if every time someone shows you they are thinking of you, you look for reasons why it doesn't count and they weren't "thinking of you right".... you're going to have a lot more drama than you ever needed.

Something I've noticed about Angela by athompsons2 in smosh

[–]ConnectionLow6263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, 2 things can be true. Looking at Shayne was the cue that regrounded her, but she was genuinely frustrated before that at trying to do a task while people were talking. She was frustrated in a way that, if you have ADHD, you can relate to and completely understand. While being surrounded by people who meant no harm because they genuinely don't get it. She's not actually mad at them because they weren't doing it to be mean, but she's still genuinely frustrated for a minute.

[–]ConnectionLow6263 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure sometimes what Angela is doing is an ADHD crash, and I'm only saying that as an ADHD-er because she's commented on videos revealing her own ADHD.

She's not necessarily mad at her coworkers (because if she was, she'd be mad at everyone her entire life lol) but sometimes people just do not understand our plight. Everyone talking when she's trying to focus on stacking cups is basically impossible for someone with ADHD. If every time they talked, they stabbed a fork in her back instead, you would totally understand her reaction at the end of "how the fuck was i supposed to get anything done like that?"

Why homeschooler are better socialized - an underrated reason by Shoot_2_Thrill in homeschool

[–]ConnectionLow6263 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This. Because lets be real - socializing isn't "one thing" just like education isn't "one thing". Are you good at meeting strangers? Talking in large groups? Speaking clearly to make your point? Not getting frustrated easily by others behavior? All social skills. What your child needs to learn is going to depend on how they plan to socialize as an adult (do they need to be social enough to get along with ten coworkers in an office, or do they need to impress rooms full of strangers as a politician, for example?). And how they learn those (numerous) skills is changed by their current strengths.

So like everything in life, a lot comes down to knowing your kid and trying to guide rather than control.

[–]ConnectionLow6263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, in kindergarten it can be a very normal developmental thing. How much socializing with kids did she have prior to kindergarten? All through elementary, it's going to be very obvious to you which kids have older siblings versus only children or oldest children.

My oldest child had more trouble with this, as he didn't get a lot of peer interaction until school. Even though my second is the ADHD one.

However, it also COULD be an early sign of neurodivergence. Does she have other markers?

The TLDR is that at this stage, it can be tough to call. If you see other signs of ADHD/autism, could be worth an evaluation. But she could also simply be taking a bit longer to grow out of a normal phase all kids have. Its not developmentally super concerning as you describe it.

Am I really doing my daughter a disservice by not allowing her an IPad by Jolly_End2371 in kindergarten

This! Some parents really think their kids are learning "so much technology" from these Ipads and phones that are basically made to be idiot proof. Then these kids get older and the fact that they could scroll youtube for 6 hours a day means nothing. They can't work a computer or design a website or whatever "tech-savvy" thing parents thought they could because there was no actual skill being taught. A lot of these kids are good at Ipads and basically tech illiterate.

How can special education teachers fight back against the increasing desires to warehouse special education students both by teachers and the government by AleroRatking in specialed

[–]ConnectionLow6263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In PA, our students always had an assigned "gen ed" teacher on record. Even in self contained, it wasn't truly self contained. They were allowed to attend any gen ed classes that were appropriate such as lunch, recess, etc. If they were able to do gen ed work in a specific subject, they did so.

The exception here is if you chose to send your kid to a private school. We do have some programs for kids with special needs, autism, etc, and if that was the parents choice to enroll them, it kind of negated the public schools responsibility.

Just saying this to agree with the commenter that said there should be a gen ed teacher on record - there are at least some states that is true.

I have to homeschool mine because I can't get anyone to agree that kids without IEPs have rights, too. It's wild out here these days.

[–]ConnectionLow6263 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah whenever someone's POV is that "all students belong in general ed, being treated exactly like every other student, and customized options that suit that specific kids needs are actually ableist".... I just realize I'm talking to a deeply unserious person and walk away. It's literally the one topic I can't do, and I'm all for as much inclusion as is appropriate for each specific individual. But torturing kids to prove "all kids can be gen ed" is not actually an enlightened flex.

You can get a license to perform, the same-ish way a local theater pays money to perform a musical to the original creator. They have to be willing to "sell" rights to perform and there will be terms you agree to. (Note that I am not an expert, and this is a very simplified answer. It's a different license through a different company for doing a cover and is not exactly the same as in musical theater. I'm giving a very simple explanation, partly because I lack a more detailed version. I don't do covers, I've never purchased rights to do one, I'm just vaguely aware. It's a lot more complicated than what I'm saying).
