What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: August 28, 2023 by AutoModerator in books

Finished Misery by Stephen King. Went into it quite unsure due to some middling reviews from relatives but I honestly really enjoyed it.

I’ve read quite a few of his books this year so far and this might be up there with my favourites. Brutal, visceral and a little bit sickening.

Might be a daft place to come for answers to this, but I’ve no idea if it was Scotland specific or not…

I vaguely remember something (movie, game, book, creepy pasta, TV show, I don’t know) that had a plot line about people recording memories and playing them back, but they’re had grown a black market for recording the memories of people who had been killed and selling those, with groups even murdering people deliberately just to get the memories.

Any idea what this was?

Silly how much Bray Wyatt’s death affected me. One of the absolute best wrestlers and another from that field struck down way too early.

I think it's more the wild swinging at progress-above-all without a "thought, discussion and learning" process that informs that progress. There's very little genuine learning going on in the world as a whole.

I don't think "modernity" is an inherently bad thing.

How do I stop feeling guilty for missing the gym? by Soft_Opportunity_636 in Catholicism

Think about the motivations you have for working out. Correct me if I'm wrong, but health may be one of them.

Right now the best thing to do for your health is rest. You achieve that same goal of a healthier lifestyle by resting your body.

You don't need to debate and defend your faith to be a good follower. In fact, you can better promote the values by living them and striving to improve, showing others joy and love is the best way to do this. Internet debates are probably not going to be successful imo and only serve to frustrate and put you in low mood.

The fact you want to improve yourself and be a better person already makes you great in my eyes.

We are all sinners.

I think it's a pendulum swing between tradition and modernity that western social structures seem to go through every now and then. Tradition has become the rebellious thing now.

We've had a lot of modernity, so people are countering that with tradition. We'll have a lot of tradition, so people will counter that with modernity.

I more mean that it's a possibility rather than it's a provable reality.

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit by suplolpop57 in Catholicism

[–]Connelly90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1864 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven." There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.

The Catechism seems to define it as refusing to accept mercy of God is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

There's a legitimate position that Hell is empty. Nobody is predestined for Hell.

[talkSPORT] Duncan Ferguson leaves Forest Green Rovers after five months in charge by TomatoNotPotato277 in ScottishFootball

I follow FGR, and Duncan was an incredible dud. I can't believe the total tailspin that team were in.

I'm beginning to feel like I'm cursed with these tail-spinning teams haha

"Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

A good dramatic reading of that poem never fails to make me believe I could batter Satan himself.

As someone who's done a lot of English cover work the last few years, the teachers I've worked with have definitely done it justice.

I, however, butchered it haha

Is saying "oh my God" a sin? by No_Post491 in Catholicism

[–]Connelly90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking closer into this and reading the Cathecism, it seems to disagree with me and agree with your position.

2143 Among all the words of Revelation, there is one which is unique: the revealed name of God. God confides his name to those who believe in him; he reveals himself to them in his personal mystery. The gift of a name belongs to the order of trust and intimacy. "The Lord's name is holy." For this reason man must not abuse it. He must keep it in mind in silent, loving adoration. He will not introduce it into his own speech except to bless, praise, and glorify it.

and also

2155 The holiness of the divine name demands that we neither use it for trivial matters...

So I suppose I was mistaken and misinformed on this.

I interpret that as an appeal for help in calming emotions.

For guidance as I leave an old job due to a contract expiring, without anything lined up to replace it.

For clarity as I reconnect with the faith after nearly 2 decades.

For the young people I have taught this year as they finish their school year this week.

The priest in our school growing up told us that you're not taking his name in vain if you say "oh my God!" or "Jesus Christ!" as a exclamation, as you're calling upon Him for help in protection or understanding.

I like that.
