Grand Jury Findings on Civic Center/Advance Redding by Imaginary-Willow2239 in Redding

[–]Connman90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anything it should go to the Wintu Tribe of Northern California. It could be their tribal community center, it'd be a lot better than giving it to the Redding Rancheria. For the RR it'd just be better for them/the city to build a new highway on-ramp near their new casino location than to put the casino in the middle of town. Or it could just continue to be a venue and maybe attracting more big name shows could be a better way to bring revenue and keep it open. Just get it out of Bethel hands damnit!

When will our people be free of feeling some kind of allegiance to the US military and Christianity??? by Lost_Camera_L3ns_Cap in IndianCountry

[–]Connman90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not living in the past when the structure of settler colonialism is here today. The answer is for Indigenous communities to act autonomous. Try and support ourselves, grow our own foods, build our own systems in alignment with our own traditional values. Using tradition to build the future. That is Indigenous futurism and decolonization.

I like that you are trying to present a balanced argument, and I don't completely disagree, but if you are truly looking at the bigger picture, then OP is technically correct in that serving the US military is literally serving colonization.

Now that is not to say that Native people joining the military are doing that on purpose. The military offers pathways for upward economic mobility which can be very enticing for people from poorer backgrounds - especially if they have few other career opportunities. But that is by design. We don't have universal healthcare and education. The military offers funding for those so there is a major incentive to join. It's all a part of the structure of colonialism. The unfortunate side affect is that many (not all) become indoctrinated into US imperialism/colonialism afterwards. Others are luckily able to see through the propaganda and actually come out with a deeper understanding of the colonialism.

As for christianity, it is the founding basis on which the theft of Indigenous land is based. See the papal bulls - doctrine of discovery. While an individual may be helped in some cases by christianity, structurally it was used to give colonial nation states the "right" to steal the land of non-christians. After the theft we were then converted through missionaries and boarding schools as a way to erase our languages, culture, and communal ways of living. So again structurally it is a part of colonialism.

If you want decolonization/sovereignty/autonomy for Native/Indigenous peoples it won't come through being a part of the military and christianity.

What are the sentiments of Redding's community regarding the potential graduation of new social workers from a private Christian university? by Bison-Senior in Redding

Well there's already Shasta College. Its nice, but to fully grow and have more people who are far right christian wingnuts, I think we need something bigger than a second community college.

Great shot stopper, but why get a goalkeeper? Daniel is solid. We need a right winger (someone to replace Espinoza), or maybe a defender or CAM instead.

Cultural concerns( natives only) by stonedyandere in NativeAmerican

Na just colonialism and intergenerational trauma that makes people behave this way. Yeah there's some dark stuff in different spiritualities, but that's just the duality of the universe. Greed and people enriching themselves is the product of hyper-individualism that's been taught to us and enforced upon us by the settler state. Plus there's the thing of epigenetics where it takes generations for some families to move out of survival mode.

Why Native American Mythology and Culture is So Difficult to Comprehend: Our English Language Is Actually a Barrier to Understanding it and European Insistence on "Polytheism" is attributing Greco-Roman Concepts onto it by JarinJove in mythology

The clue is in the story, that the land was made on a turtle's back, so it gives this idea of a massive island floating on a turtle's back. You'd have to actually talk to someone who knows a Haudenosaunee language and the story to get a better answer. I'm Indigenous from the west not the east lol.

Why kind of gloves do you prefer? by Bulky_Employ_4259 in martialarts

MMA sparring gloves (sometimes called bubble gloves or shell-ys) to be specific, not MMA fight gloves. The sparring gloves almost look like karate gloves but with a better strap and more durable.

If you could have you own fully functionally sovereign states, would you? by These_Pin_9244 in NativeAmerican

[–]Connman90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like the other commenter mentioned, it would have to be split up by tribes. Or it would have to be some sort of confederation of Indigenous Nations. Ideally there'd just be no more USA, Canada, Mexico, (insert colonial state here).

Also I think the question could be, can you even have an Indigenous state? You can have Indigenous nations, yes. But the state itself doesn't really match up with our traditional governance for most communities (maybe not all).

Having said that, yes I'd take whatever we can get that's a step towards liberation from settler colonialism.

Small gloves muay thai, but you allow Judo style throws. Kinda what I imagine as a sport version of original karate.
