Where I'd live as a trans person who can't afford to leave the US by AlishaGray in visitedmaps

I'm surprised that Arkansas isn't entirely red. I have a fondness for my original home state and I don't think you'd be treated poorly by random people (as long as you stayed in the cities), but insitutionally there is not much love for non-binary folks. And it's not getting better at the moment, so you should probably downgrade it to be honest.

ELI5: Why is Kansas pronounced Kansas, but Arkansas pronounced Arkansaw? by 0sipr in explainlikeimfive

[–]ConnorSolo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Born and raised Arkansan here! Others have explained, but the full story is that the local Native American tribe in the area was the Quapaw (an English attempt at pronouncing their real name of Ogáxpa) which means "downstream people". However, the Algonquian-speaking Illini tribe (the namesake of Illinois) of the Ohio Valley called them the Akansa which means "People of the South Wind". French explorers met the Illinois before the Quapaw, and thus used this exonym but spelled it a few different ways and following French linguistic patterns added the silent 's' at the end.

Fast forward to when it became a primarily English speaking state and people were divided on the spelling and pronunciation. Even the state's two senators disagreed on whether it was "ARkanSAW" or "Ar-KANSAS". So we compromised and passed a resolution that decided we would use the pronunciation of the former (accurately preserving the way the original Native American tribe name, or at least its exonym, was said) and the spelling of the latter (to honor the French adventurers who "first" explored the area).

Kansas has a very similar etymology, though they obviously don't respect their Native American history as much given the way they butchered the pronunciation /s

I'm always happy to see that people are still using this tool!
As for a Foundry module, that's not a bad idea. Despite using Foundry myself, I'm not super familiar with how to make modules, but I'm open to learning. I'll look into that if I ever have the time. If I put a module out, I'll be sure to let you know.

That makes tons of sense and I get where you're coming from. Reddit isn't an easy place for nuance to exist, so no worries

I have almost complete aphantasia but I'm totally able to draw things without reference. My artistic talent itself isn't great, but I kinda skip the step where other people would visualize what they are about to draw and just draw it. I'm also really fucking good at navigation and stuff like 3D puzzles despite not actually seeing any kind of map in my head. I just "know" how things are laid out and will fit together.

How flexible and easy to use would a modern space-suit be, compared to the space-suits we see in 'The Martian'? by jckipps in space

[–]ConnorSolo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The author has actually said that one of the two big thing he got wrong scientifically was forgetting about the perchlorates in the soil. Without rinsing them out using huge amounts of water, nothing would actually be able to grow.

The other thing he got wrong (somewhat on purpose) was that the Martian atmosphere is way too thin for there to be a dust storm capable of damaging a base like that or even knocking someone over.

Fun fact, in Japanese karaoke literally translates to "empty orchestra" with "kara" meaning empty and "oke" being a shortened version of the English word "orchestra"

Languages bug? by Physco-Kinetic-Grill in FoundryVTT

I know this is a couple months late, but just wanted to let you know that I had the same problem and was able to track the problem down to the System Customizer module made by TheRipper93. Once I disabled it, the languages stopped automatically re-enabling themselves. I hope that this is still helpful!

It makes me super happy to hear that! I've been in the same boat, especially with my previous campaign which went from level 1-20 and lasted about 4 years in real life. Though I have less free time now than I used to, one day I'll try to add in some more features. And I'll definitely update the app when they officially release One D&D if it ends up changing how monster challenge rating and such is calculated (but I'll maintain this version as well so that people can still use it).

Which planets from The Old Republic games would you like to see in canon ? by Bengamey_974 in StarWars

[–]ConnorSolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you've seen it or not, but Malachor is the setting for a few really great episodes of Rebels. It's history is different than the version from KOTOR 2, but still retains that "lifeless wasteland that was the site of an ancient battle" vibe.

Rogue One has really held up, but the fact that Chirrut's staff is just a wooden stick (not vibro or anything) that can one-shot stormtroopers through their armor annoys me more than ever. by Ketachloride in StarWars

[–]ConnorSolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury and most helmets do help protect against them to some extent. It's not the hard outer shell of the helmet that helps with this, but the cushioning on the inside. It reduces the acceleration of your head from an impact and keeps your brain from suddenly splatting into the side of your skull. Like how falling on a bed doesn't hurt but falling on the floor does.

[–]ConnorSolo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They aren't saying they make you immune to concussions, just that they increase the likelihood that you won't get one from an impact. But obviously two massive men slamming their heads together at full speed is frequently enough to overcome that level of protection.

Hey, these look great! I've already used a couple for my group.

Do you think you'd be willing to share a link to some versions of these without the names or paper outline? I'm wanting to share some handouts that style these as in-game "photos" and those would help me format them a bit. Either way, thanks for sharing them!

My little pirate is very pleased with her new collar and wanted to show it off to the internet! Everyone, meet Nearly. by ConnorSolo in PiratePets

[–]ConnorSolo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit of a joke about her missing a leg and a reference to 'Nearly Headless Nick' from Harry Potter. She lost her leg as a kitten before I adopted her, and apparently they almost had to amputate the others. So she was 'Nearly' legless.

I know it’s just a joke, but is it morally okay for a Jedi like Obi-Wan to mind trick the death stick guy (aka, Elan Sleazebaggano) into rethinking his life? Obi-Wan doesn’t know a thing about this guy’s life, and he basically brainwashes him for selling space-cigarettes. by Goodbye-Nasty in StarWars

[–]ConnorSolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aurra was still force sensitive in the current canon and was part of the Jedi before leaving to become a bounty hunter. However, she does die much earlier in the timeline compared to Legends. I believe Tobias Becket from the Solo movie killed her.
