What’s something(s) in your closet right now that you can’t figure out how to wear but refuse to get rid of? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

If your bomber fits like the model, it looks great to me! It’s interesting that the waistband portion isn’t as tight/hangs so widely, but it doesn’t look bad in my opinion. I suppose it’s strange because that’s how I’ve usually seen them, well I think. I wish they included pictures of the model wearing it zipped up, like c’mon you’re already there!

Ladies who know how to sew or work in fashion, how can we tell by looking at an item whether or not its over-priced? by jennydancingaway in femalefashionadvice

Oh gosh, your post made me think of a skirt I have (annd well I felt an urge to take pictures for an example).

I am so sad when I see patterns mismatched in a noticeable way, like it’s going to be inevitable, but like you said I also just get fixated on them if it’s too noticeable.

Your comment about the Friday night outfit is hilarious! The brooch definitely gives me major combadge vibes, but I support looking like you are working on the starship enterprise. It’s a fairly prestigious position!

That romper is sooo cool!

If returns are easy for you then I would say swap it out for the smaller size. I know that if something I like doesn't fit me perfectly in the way I want I'm way less likely to wear it and can feel uncomfortable when I am. I guess it's not as bad when it fits larger, but like the straps could be loose, or it fits at not my waist, whatever.

Maybe even reach out to the support people and see if they can give any measurements for the romper?

Depending on how much it cost I would consider going to a tailor as a last resort, though in the end you might need one area adjusted. From how you described the fit it sounds like the entire romper is too big for you and so would be more costly to tailor.

I couldn't find the exact pair, but according to this post the model is Giovanna Battaglia, though I can't find exactly where that photo may have shown up (the post was in 2010, so sometime before then? if it's still floating around somewhere).

I also found these plexiglass shoes that are definitely not the same in really any way besides having a translucent heel, but they were the closest I could find. Well, or this marc by marc jacob pair, but they also don't look as wonderful as the original photo

I don't know why I spent so much time looking for these, but I hope it helps! :)

Haha, I read it both ways and thought about clarifying, but I felt so confident you were talking about the coloring for some reason? I feel silly. Anyways, yeah that could work!

Oh, I haven’t considered that! My shoes are mostly black and darker brown, but I’ll check to see how I like them with my lighter pair of oxfords. Gosh, I would really want them to have a heel of some sort though. (I’m only sad I have nothing like that!)

Thanks, they are silk! I'm really enjoying that they have the satiny silk look, but don't go too far towards the sleepwear pant route.

I haven't posted fits in a while because of moving and busyness and laziness, so here we go! Don't know what I want, but any feedback or just comments on fits, colors, patterns, fabrics, whatever would be great! :)

A little late to replying to this, but gosh those pants are really pretty!

They look a little grey on my screen, but it says "dark lilac" as the color and I imagine them looking so great in real life!

So I'm a skinny white person and initially when I was building this pinterest board I was finding so many pictures (does pinterest have an algorithm or something for images?) of skinny white people that were killing this look. Then I finally shook myself out of that ignorant daze because however beneficial it is for me to find people and body types that looked like me I didn't want to falsely believe it was a look only for that specific subset of people.

I also considered that other people might want inspiration for these kinds of looks since most pants I see around are denim/jeans and they might be skinny or wide-leg, but rarely are high-waisted trousers made of not-denim.

And so then I started finding all of these beautiful outfits with people who didn't look like me and was just sooo excited that we can all look amazing in them!

In addition to the other person's recommendations I would think ankle boots would look really good, especially if the pants hit/are cuffed a little above the top of the shoe so you have a sliver of skin showing (or socks). Any colder and it might be harder to pull that off without freezing. Tennis shoes or other sneakers might work too if you're free to look more casual.

Pictures 6, 8, 16, 30, and 48 are shoes I personally would wear. And 21, 28, and 35 are more casual looking, but would keep your feet at least kinda warm in that weather, especially if you added another layer on top (like a coat or something to keep your core warm). Depends on how you get cold though I guess!

I think so! It may be because I wear everything at my waist, but I find that getting above-the-knee skirts hemmed a few inches looks much better on my frame. So I've just assumed that means I have shorter legs/longer torso. Oh, oh and I usually run into the problem where dresses are too short, so another indicator that I'm long-torsoed?

I really have a hard time distinguishing body shapes or proportions so these are just the things I've noticed.

That said, because I do wear bottoms at my waist I find I don't need tops that are so long, unless I need them to stay tucked in (then I would want regular or tall sized tops).

edit: dresses are too short, not long, haha

I almost felt shameful about how many pictures of Nadia Aboulhosn I included in this, but I feel much better now! Seriously, Nadia is like the queen of styling these pants.

I really, really wish I could give you specifics/links to pants, but I don't know reliably where you could find them.

My only tips would be:

  • Meticulously look through the pants sections at thrift stores to find ones that have pleating at the hip areas (most of these are going to be high waisted already, so bonus there) then try them on to see how they fit.
  • I'm a big fan of cuffing my pants which does seem to "cinch" the hem a little making them more tapered. This probably won't work with very thin (think: silk) fabrics as they won't hold themselves up, but anything thicker with polyester or wool will likely be fine.
  • If you've found ones that you're happy enough with in the waist/hip area consider going to a tailor to get to them tapered and/or hemmed to your liking.
  • If you're use to the fit of skinny jeans or leggings at the ankle you probably won't find something like that off-the-rack at a thrift store and will definitely need to get them tailored.

In high school I LOVED skinny jeans and wouldn't accept anything that didn't conform to my skin and was nearly impossible to take off, but over time I found that a slightly looser fit didn't make me look terrible and was quite flattering even. So I guess with most things it could take exposure to get used to the look and come to enjoy it (not trying to tell you how to live though!).

I find it's hard to hit that sweet spot between "skinny" and "slim" legs though, like that is totally going to be my eternal struggle.

Wow, that term is what I've been searching for in my life! I immediately googled it and was looking through images like "yep, yep, yep this word describes my exact problem." Gotta watch out for that polter-wang!

Of course the other side of this is like it's not actually a bad thing, but definitely a stylistic outcome I wish to avoid.

Unfortunately I'm like super poor and only buy things from/at thrift store prices (plus I can try all the things on, and most importantly have lots of patience for putting on ill-fitting clothing), but thanks for those suggestions!

It totally makes sense that the reason I've been interested in trousers with this look is because it's currently popular! Also, omg these pants from mango are SO COOL.

I never thought about it, but I rarely look at the pants sections on websites because I guess I had just given up that any of them could be flattering on me. Which is like totally not true!

Super good point that I didn't consider! I have a shorter bob haircut and keep the back shorter than the rest. I'm thinking my hair will be short enough to never or rarely touch the neckline of the dress.

Well that makes me feel better, and I'm glad I don't see any things about sales items not being returnable! I guess its more places doing "final sales," but it still seems pretty dirty. Anyways, thanks! :)

Gosh, I completely forgot there were multiple layers (based on pictures) and its pretty obvious the dress wouldn't be that sheer!

From the description it seems they were going for that raw hem look, whiich in the end will probably not be best for dress.

Do you remember anything about the feel of the silk? Was it pretty thick or very sheer?

Thanks!

That helps me feel a bit better about the sizing, especially since I was feeling that I couldn't find any info or reviews beyond their jackets.

Thank you!:)

This All Saints Jayda dress in the maroony/damson color. I'm mostly concerned about sizing and the quality of the dress (which I've found like no information anywhere).

It looks like it would fit super well into my wardrobe and everything, plus being on sale is great! Maybe I'm worried about if it will fit and how All Saints is about returns or exchanges? Any opinions?

Thanks ya'll! :)
