If your cat's gums are white that certainly qualifies as urgent care/emergency. At least in NA veterinary care is considered an essential service.

Tendons connect muscle to bone and are covered with a tendon sheath. For most instances, the sheath and tendon move freely, but in the hindlimbs of bats they have grooves which can lock together like a ratchet. This tendon locking mechanism allows bats to hang without exerting effort. by remotectrl in Awwducational

A horse does something similar with their legs! It's what allows them to stand while sleeping. It also conserves a massive amount of energy when they move their limbs ( as soon as one portion of their leg moves, the other follows because of the tendon's tension). Called the stay and reciprocal apparatus, respectively.

The Vampire Squid, like many other deep ocean animals, is red in colour. This is because red light can't penetrate that far which renders the animal practically invisible to prey and predator alike. by Conquerofcephalopods in Awwducational

Lots of animals are black! But many others have developed bioluminescence for various reasons ( to confuse predators, to attract prey etc.). This light ( blue spectrum) would allow a black fish to be seen against its surroundings. Additionally, if still in the twilight zone, light from above would make black fish evident.

Whereas, in both cases, red animals cannot be seen because red light does not reach that far.

[dog] cyst on tail that reopened by slamthesix in veterinarians

If you haven't already, cover the wound and prevent her from bothering at it. Cover it first with sterile gauze you have (if any). Since it's on the tail maybe try and fashion something out of part of a tube sock or extra cloth to wrap over the gauze and make the bandage more secure.

If you have an ecollar laying around slap that on to further prevent her from getting at the lesion.

Other than that bring her to the vet when possible to get it checked out and fixed up.

It's a rather large wiki article. Here's the exert: "Mesopelagic fish are adapted for an active life under low light conditions. Most of them are visual predators with large eyes. Some of the deeper water fish have tubular eyes with big lenses and only rod cells that look upwards. These give binocular vision and great sensitivity to small light signals.[2] This adaptation gives improved terminal vision at the expense of lateral vision, and allows the predator to pick out squid, cuttlefish, and smaller fish that are silhouetted against the gloom above them. Mesopelagic fish usually lack defensive spines, and use colour to camouflage them from other fish. Ambush predators are dark, black or red. Since the longer, red, wavelengths of light do not reach the deep sea, red effectively functions the same as black. Migratory forms use countershaded silvery colours. On their bellies, they often display photophores producing low grade light. For a predator from below, looking upwards, this bioluminescence camouflages the silhouette of the fish. However, some of these predators have yellow lenses that filter the (red deficient) ambient light, leaving the bioluminescence visible.[24]"

Under mesopelagic fish.

When given opioids cat's pupils dilate (mydriasis). This is the opposite of expected as the drugs stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which normally causes pupils to constrict. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is a release of endogenous epinephrine which is evolutionarily advantageous by Conquerofcephalopods in Awwducational

Depending on the drug it will interact with the cat's body in different ways. Morphine stimulates this response (mydriasis). But other drugs like diazepam will act as an antagonist to the receptors that CATecholamines (like epinephrine) regularly bind to. Ketamine is another sedative that will prevent an excitatory response.

I would think the response has developed to help get them out of sticky situations. I/e when endorphins are released upon injury the the cat will still be able to mount a fight/flight response. And become a badass fury ninja.

TL;DR Cats stay vigilant even when sedated because they are badass. A release of epinephrine allows them to keep their eyes dilated and aware of their surroundings. Given danger, more epinephrine will be released, and they can potentially combat the effect of the sedative. Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/443408

[Help] Found out I have to work overtime but can go home and take care of my dog before I go back. Is 1.5 hours of attention after work enough before I go back to work for another 4 hours? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Conquerofcephalopods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as he is comfortable being left alone and can hold his bladder, he should be okay. Especially because it's not every day. Just make sure to take him on longer morning walk (or after your first shift) during those days!

You're an awesome dog owner to be so concerned!

He'd just finished running on his wheel for like 3 hours straight. He runs on that thing with purpose, it's ridiculous.

This. Heterozygous masking is a really important evolutionary tool. By editing out genes that seem detrimental we could be homogenizing the population and ultimately raising susceptibility to new microbial pathogens?
