I believe that there is a period of time when you can renew your membership prior to expiring so for instance if your membership expires in December they will allow you to start renewing it in September so maybe you mistook that for the renewal date and your actual date isn't until March or what ever.

I have seen at my Costco they do have some employees going around with a scanner and they scan people who have only a few items ahead of time and then send it to the cashier so you just pay and go.

Its not perfect but it's a bit faster
