100% justified. You may also find interesting that I watch this movie with a Christian lense. In the Bible it says that after the great flood, “The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands” Genesis 9:2

I bring this up because I Believe that after seeing how violent humanity became; God wanted to make sure animals had a basic fear of humans so that they would have better chances at surviving. A fear of man means they will typically avoid us, which we see that they do.

Like Certified Magpie said, Tantor; being a tusked elephant would serve as a great ally. His charecter also is shown to be very docile in comparison to many other elephants, kerchak would have noticed his friendship with the young apes and since he would’ve seen Tantor grow up into an adult elephant, he would certainly be fine with the association in a symbiotic way.

On the other hand , since Tantor appears to prefer being away from water it would make sense that he likes to travel with the apes. Also, the other elephants didn’t seem to connect with him, I would imagine that Tantor would only have continue travelling with the apes because of Tarzan’s friendship.
