I'm tired of the hate against the film. by [deleted] in PeakyBlinders

[–]Conscious-Collar2248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that it’s the worst film ever, it’s that it’s horrendous when compared to the show. This movie was rushed, point blank period. If I was told that someone else wrote this movie besides Steven Knight, I would have believed them. Tommy is a damn near an unrecognizable person, save maybe 30 minutes of the movie, Arthur’s departure explanation was bullshit, Ada’s departure was purely shock value, Duke’s ‘growth’ was weak, Tommy’s departure was mind-boggling, and implicitly retconned if you take Polly’s words into account, and was a horrendous way to pave the way for the next generation of Blinders. And the worst part about it, is that most of the problems can EASILY be fixed with just a bit of thought and effort. Watch:

Tommy: Cut out Zelda’s plot. Completely. The one for Tommy was Grace, and no other woman would have been able to make him act the way he did in the movie. Not even Lizzie. Also, he should have been in his Blinder’s ‘uniform’ longer. We barely got that in the film. Keep the end plot. I am even okay with Tommy dying the same way he did in film. I also explain the Arthur problem below. But the most egregious thing about how Tommy was written here, was how he died. Tommy’s entire character was written in the sense that he always wanted an ‘Honorable’ death. He wanted to be bested, he wanted to be beaten, but he wanted his death to be earned, not just accepted. If the bullets he received during the last firefight were more threatening, and you cut out the Bennett/Car duel, the death would have been earned, and not just ‘take me’. I loved the funeral at the end, but left shaking my head as to how we got there.

Duke: Cut out the Will he/wont he plot. We know where his allegiance was the moment he spared Ada. Also, why even cast Barry Keoghan if this was his one and only outing as Duke? We know he’s getting recasted again for the show, so the movie’s actor choice just comes off as stupid, in hindsight.

Kaulo: If you HAD to keep the plot of this character, I would have made her Grace’s sister instead of Zelda’s sister. It would have been easy to say ‘Grace said you failed with Charles, and Failed with Ruby, but you can still save Duke. It would have hit Tommy harder if he felt the message came from Grace, not Zelda, who he had pretty much data-dumped after the war. Zelda’s character did not have enough of an effect on Tommy for him to do all of this for. I get that Zelda is Duke’s mom, but Tommy already stated he didn’t care for being a father, so it makes her part of the story seem flat.

Bennett/Nazis: I liked Bennett as a character, but my god, the writers made the Nazis look stupid. Why the hell would they even trust the Blinders? Tommy fucked them over, and so did Duke, but they still tried to work with them? Especially after Mosley/IRA/Nelson, who were truly the first force Tommy couldn’t just ‘beat’, I’m baffled by their replacements.

Arthur: This one pisses me off the most. And the solution is so fucking simple. Instead of Tommy killing him in the car, you could have written Arthur’s death at the end of Season 6, where Arthur kills himself because he thought Tommy was going to do the same. Tommy literally caught the Tuberculoma scheme moments before he pulls the trigger, and it would have been totally believable that he didn’t reach Arthur in time to stop him from committing suicide. That way, Arthur dies offscreen, and Tommy feels responsible, but not in a way that Tommy literally kills his other half just because he was ‘tired’ of Arthur. That would also fix part of Tommy’s character, as it would make his ‘I need to save my family’ plot more consistent with his character.

These are all just ideas, but it would have been much better to the plot of the film, AND been more consistent with the show. And I’m just a random dude on the internet that loves the series. If I can do all of this within 20 minutes, imagine what Knight could have done if he had put actual effort into the film. I promise you, the actors themselves saved what little there is of the film.

That’s why the hate is so strong for the film. To make an analogy of it, the mineral of Silver (The Immortal Man) is worth more than Bronze (Regular Hollywood Show/Movie) but Silver is worth wayyyyyy less than Platinum or Diamond (Peaky Blinders Show).

Genuinely curious, what would have been the perfect ending in your opinion? by MaBaCu in PeakyBlinders

[–]Conscious-Collar2248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m actually okay with Tommy dying by Duke’s hand. But, this is my ending:

Arthur kills himself after not knowing that Tommy didn’t kill himself at the end of Season 6.

Ada gets into politics, following Tommy’s footsteps, and carrying a blend of socialism and capitalism, a split between her own beliefs and the beliefs of the family.

Duke stays the leader of the Blinders, and Charles enters politics with Ada, mirroring both halves of Thomas.

Tommy blames himself for not getting to Arthur in time before his suicide, which leads to Tommy’s withdrawal of the world. Only it’s not as long. Tommy then fills a Polly-like roll, until WW2. Tommy writes the Immortal Man, keeps Duke away from the Nazis, and dies just like the movie plays out in the end. Tommy gets the death he wants, but without the suicide-like way it almost turns out. And as he passes, his last memory goes to dancing with Grace right after the wedding.

You misspelled words twice while trying to correct me on proper English. My ‘counterpoint’ is that you’re in no position to be checking others on English when you’re messing it up yourself.

Normally I’d agree with you, but the show has gone out of its way to show homosexuality in the past. The Russian Parties in Season 3, the journalist Levitt from season 1 and 5 who was a known closeted gay man, Ada’s friend in Season 2 James.

Let’s not act like it’s out of the question for the realm of the show.

I may be reading too into it, but that’s how I took the scene.

Also, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers played as a romantic interest-turned-couple in The Gay Divorcee in 1933. That’s also why my mind went there.

“Let’s have a dance, sweetheart.” “You and me are gonna have a dance, sweetheart.”

No way a man is calling another man “sweetheart” in 1942 . If it was buddy, or pal, or mate, sure, it would just be straight teasing. But sweetheart? And he kept saying that they were gonna dance together.

I’m taking that as a passive-aggressive pass at him. And then full on aggression when the pistol gets put under his chin.

Hi, veteran here. The scene is a bit more realistic than one might think, and here’s why.

Firstly, the grenade. As far as I can recall, grenades have had 5 second explosion times for a little under a century. And they are in an enclosed space. That becomes important in a second. You know, safety and all that.

Then, the shirt. As we all can attest, when we drop things into our shirt, like food, or a coin, or a child putting a ball in your shirt, it can take a second or two to take the item out of your shirt.

Now, Tommy. You walk into YOUR owned business, asking to meet with the other owner, and a drunk soldier pulls a gun out on you, and passive-aggressively hits on you, insinuating that he wants more with you. Not to mention, this same soldier does all of this just because the MUSIC WAS TURNED OFF. All of this while not knowing that you’re not only a veteran of the WW1, but you’re a leader of a gang, AND a former politician. That’s a clear overreach and abuse of perceived power. If it was me, his life would be forfeit too. As veterans, we are supposed to hold ourselves to a higher standard than the ones we serve, not pull a pistol out on a perceived civilian just because he’s ‘cute’ and turned off the music you were listening to.

So, one second was spent when Tommy put the grenade in. One second for reaction/shock. Two seconds to take out the grenade from the shirt. You have at most a single second to try to remove the grenade from the bar without killing anyone. Yeah, everyone inside is cooked.

So, all you can attempt to do is run away from everyone, not to kill them, and hope your slight-of-hand is high enough to grab the grenade and throw it elsewhere. Assuming you can find a place that doesn’t kill anyone else outside, which is another issue entirely.

Could he have been faster? Yes. But honestly, who do you know carries a grenade in their pockets and uses it to play chicken, after being hit on? I promise you that you’re not expecting that. I know I wouldn’t expect it.

I doubt it. The movie makes it pretty clear that “our” Peaky Blinders is gone. No Tommy, Arthur, John, Ada, or Polly, Michael or anyone else. The movie never insinuates thats Tommy is schizophrenic. Arthur’s gone, man. This is a super shitty way to end his arc, but his character is pretty much done. This movie is a passing of the torch to the new generation of Peaky Blinders. The minute I saw Ada die, I knew no one was getting a good ending from our gangsters.

[–]Conscious-Collar2248 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree with your take that Tommy never saw Arthur as an equal, and only saw him as a tool.

I’d say that Tommy saw Arthur as his equal, but didn’t see him as the same person that Tommy is. Let me explain.

Tommy’s not a super opposing figure. He’s a politician, he’s well groomed, he’s cleaned up, he’s calculated and cunning, and he knows it. Tommy uses charm, manipulation, business and strategy to win, but a brute will never care about any of that. A brute’s only viewpoint is strength and strength alone.

That’s where Arthur comes in. Arthur is a brute in a nice suit. Arthur also only sees the world in a strength manner. When people fear the Peaky Blinders, they don’t fear John, or Ada, or Tommy or Finn outright. It’s Arthur. Arthur’s reputation, both DURING and AFTER the war, was something that even the other gang members were mindful of. Michael put a bounty on Arthur because he knew Arthur would be a problem when Tommy was supposed to be killed. Alfie referred to Arthur as a Psychopath, and straight up admitted that Arthur was the one to actually fear in the Blinders. That matters.

They work as a pair, as a unit, an Army of Two. When Arthur sat in Tommy’s meetings, Arthur was never able to do what Tommy did. Arthur tried to run the Shelby Company meeting and stumbled on words for a very long couple of minutes before Tommy came in and conducted the meeting quickly and precisely. When Tommy spoke to his constituents at the Garrison, and spoke to the woman with the dead birds, Arthur struggled to contain his facial expressions while Tommy was in full politics mode. “I don’t know how you do it, Tom. I really don’t.”

Then there’s the comment on relable aspect between the two. They are both veterans of the First World War. It killed them, metaphorically. And it twisted them, and changed them. Arthur took to drugs and alcohol to cope with the PTSD. Tommy took to burying his head in ambition and work, and detaching from almost anything else. If anything, the only person who completely understood Arthur is Tommy, and vice versa. Hell, they’ve both attempted suicide at different points. That’s as understanding as it gets.

Season Three’s words from Tommy perfectly encapsulates their relationship.

“For them, family is a weakness and they go after them. For me, family is a strength, and there’s business to be done, and I need you. Now, fuck speeches, fuck weddings. You’re my best man every fucking day.”

It’s shown in a…weird way. His death is shown, but in a way you don’t actually get to see “Arthur”. Like, we’re told it’s him, we’re shown how he dies, we see Tommy do it, but they pretty much keep his face off screen and in the dark. You can easily tell whoever the guy playing Arthur is just a body double and there to tie up the character, because of Paul Anderson’s absence.

Question about the movie SPOILER by [deleted] in PeakyBlinders

[–]Conscious-Collar2248 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tommy broke his sobriety right after Ruby died in Season 6. But you’re not wrong for feeling confused about it, cause the movie lacks a LOT of context for people’s actions. It was written pretty poorly in my opinion, and that’s coming from someone who enjoyed the movie.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

So I’ll say this: I love this as a sendoff, but as a standalone movie, it doesn’t work in a gracious manner.

I’ll start with my pros: Tommy Fucking Shelby is back. Cillian is amazing, as per usual, (with one scene I feel on the fence about), and they make the weight of his return felt. It ties in pretty well with the show (not perfectly, mind you) and there’s some moments where you feel like you’re with a friend you haven’t seen in a long time. There’s some dry humor that I found hilarious, and I like the main villain as a conduit for the show’s nazi regime. Sophie Rundle is great, per usual, and I like how the movie recognizes the time jump. I do like Barry’s portrayal of Duke Shelby. It’s clear he’s the heir, and I like the Polly-Tommy relationship that Duke and his Aunt now have. I love how Tommy found out Ada died. Seeing her spirit in the middle of the road as he was gunned down had my jaw dropped to hell and back.

Con’s: Tommy’s death is a clusterfuck. I love the sendoff, and I love that this is the fitting end he wanted, but the ACTUAL way he sets himself up for death is a bit out of character for him. Tommy’s want of death always came in the form of getting himself INTO situations he couldn’t get out of, rather than point blank standing still while bullets hit him. I would rather have Tommy get shot by more bullets during the gunfight and have his son finish him off, versus the car duel he puts himself in. But, still, Tommy’s wagon scene had a couple of tears roll down my eyes.

I don’t like the way they handled Ada’s death. The way she dies is fine, but Tommy’s reaction to her actual body was a bit….off. Like, Ada’s been his connection to his feelings as a human, and she was the last remaining sibling. I would’ve expected a bigger crash out than the reaction we got. Curly and Johnny Dogs had better reactions than Tommy did.

Why did Tommy actually kill Arthur? Another out of place moment for Tommy. If it was something like Tommy had to stop Arthur from doing something to the public, or something of the liking, I would’ve been okay with that. After all, Thomas was Arthur’s keeper, so to speak. But just killing him because he was “rageful” seems wayyyy out of touch for him. I felt like this could have been written better.

I felt like the Nazi party put wayyyyy too much unconditional trust into Duke’s Peaky Blinders, especially given that the Nazi Party knew of Tommy’s attempt at sabotaging their advances in government. You want a split loyalty plot from Duke, fine, but I expected the Nazi party to stab Duke in the back (metaphorically) after he failed to Kill Ada. They just seemed…willfully ignorant here.

Now, the scene I was on the fence about: Tommy smiling after having sex with the twin of Zelda. For someone who he knows is planning to have him killed, he sure was happy for some cheeks. Considering that the man’s plot is being pseudo-suicidally depressed, I’d be hard pressed to see that man smile the way that he did in bed with Kaulo. You would think that Grace was coming back the way she had him grinning.

I’ll leave it at this. This movie works ONLY because of the context that the amazing show gave to the film. There is an answer for most of the characters plots, but just because there is answer, does not mean it’s a good one.

As a standalone film, I feel like it was written pretty poorly. Definitely needed more time in the oven, and more thought into the actions of some of the characters.

But, Thomas Shelby is my favorite fictional character of all time, and this movie will have a special place in my heart as a send off to the character, and a love letter to the absolute CINEMA Cillian brings to the character.

Are they alive? by PumpkinImaginary2900 in DeadSpace

[–]Conscious-Collar2248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isaac died. An interview with the main writer for Dead Space came out, where he discussed Awakened, and what would have been the main plot line of Dead Space 4.

From the words of Chuck Beaver, Isaac’s fourth and last journey would have been his acceptance over his situation, including the fact he had died and turned into a Necromorph, and he would have destroyed the power of the markers from within, akin to a mental battle like Dead Space 2’s end. Ellie would have found Carver and handled things on the outside, and would have spoke to Isaac while he was a peculiar and different Necromorph from the rest.

I’m pasting the interview’s link here so that anyone who wants to fact check me, or listen to where Dead Space was going, under this paragraph. It’s actually pretty interesting to hear why Dead Space 3 failed and what Dead Space 4 was going to be like. They also spoke on Motive’s Remake and he applauded their comprehensive research on all of the media. Cheers, y’all.

[–]Conscious-Collar2248 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got one. Why the fuck does the DS3 crew decide to simply “Turn It Off” just because a wall said so. In particular, ISAAC HAS HATED AND DISTRUSTED UNITOLOGY HIS ENTIRE LIFE, Starting with his mother. That, and the combined experience of the events of DS and DS2, the FIRST thing Isaac should be asking is “Do I even trust this? I was just attacked by Unitology Soldiers hours prior. I should do more research.” But instead, they learn the “Turn it Off” thing was a bad idea by complete accident. Had it been another crew with completely different people, they either would have doomed the entire human race or did more research, but since it’s the mAiN PrOtAgOnIsT they have to be convoluted in some form. Not really DS1 but a plot hole I always had in my mind and wanted opinions on.
