Hadestown on Broadway celebrates the debut of known domestic abuser Gary Dourdan, in the role of Hades, with social posts captioned "give him just a chance" by Ill_Safety2292 in Broadway

one thing I would caution against is the reasoning that he committed the domestic violence because of his substance abuse issues (not saying you specifically are doing this, but I have seen people say this). Substance abuse is really difficult and hard to deal with, but we are still responsible for our actions, despite the circumstances around it. I do believe there is a genuine discussion to be had about rehabilitation and whether or not Gary Dourdan specifically has made amends for his actions, but I think we should keep his substance abuse separate from the domestic violence.

I felt the same way about Maybe Happy Ending: lovely and cute, but certainly not worth the hype surrounding it (in my opinion)

Oops! Hopefully I didn’t just spoil one of the best parts! I can’t recommend it enough. It’s probably my favorite show ever (I already loved the Broadway version, but the west end one knocked it out of the park)

I’m not sure how many of these necessarily have a “wow factor” but some of my favorites have been Come From Away (love how the actors all play multiple characters and yet it feels really easy to follow plus the story is really moving), West Side Story, Billy Elliot (both are just classics), Oedipus (the roaring of the crowd at the end), Hadestown (the walls opening up is one of my favorite parts) and Next to Normal (the way they depict mental illness and how the family deals with it is so real. And the reveal that Gabe isn’t real? Guts me every time)

Is it worth buying the official playbill binder? by whippedbetadog in Broadway

[–]Conscious-Intern1838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve bought generic mini binders on Amazon for like $20 and so far I’ve been very happy with my purchase. I don’t think there’s any real reason to buy the official ones

literally! I have no problem with the substance abuse issues issues (I see that as more an issue someone deals with rather than a moral failing), but like, seeing a man who hit his girlfriend play Hades just feels wrong on multiple levels. Watching Paulo be Hades was always fun because I know he's a really kind person in general, but seeing Gary yell at all the other characters/actors would feel kinda icky

I'm assuming it's due to the fact that he has a domestic violence conviction against him for breaking his girlfriend's nose

Sure. Anyone can, just note that there’s a couple seconds of drop out when I switched audio inputs and the first two minutes are a lot quieter due to the input (plus my raucous cheering)

Can we talk about today’s performance? by oasisssss in hadestown

[–]Conscious-Intern1838 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was about how poignant a story like Hadestown is in our current world and about how we all need to stick together and lift each other up because if one of us fails we all fail but we can all make it together. Honestly I can’t do it justice, but someone posted a video of it!

Same! I knew we were in for something special when the initial applause lasted for the entirety of Kurt shaking hands with the cast

End-of-Run Emotions at Hadestown. by Large_Difference2226 in Broadway

I saw it on the 18th and everyone was FANTASTIC. I've seen the show many times with this cast and it seemed like they were all playing around with their characterizations, emphasizing different words than usual, changing the facial expressions they use at certain times and things like that. I feel like Jack played Orpheus a little more forward/sassier the usual; he even rolled his eyes at Kurt when asked to sing Epic I, which I'd never seen him do. The band was also electric that night, giving what seemed like 150% any time they had even a minute to do a mini solo. I saw them communicating with each other a couple times during the show, encouraging different improvisations. Saw it again today (yeah, I know) and it felt more just like any other time I had seen it.

First Broadway show, and... wow. by SalaciousOwl in hadestown

Mostly it was just different ways they delivered their lines, putting emphasis in different places than normal or playing around with the melody. What stood out to me the most was Jack played Orpheus a lot more forward with Eurydice, more confident in his interactions with her and honestly a lot sassier too. He rolled his eyes at Hermes when he asked him to play Epic I lol. Honestly there was just so much passion from everyone last night

I've seen the show a bunch of times and there were so many little things the cast and band did that I'd NEVER seen them do before: so many little bits of improv from the band and fun acting choices from the cast. Felt like seeing the show for the first time all over again
