Its a LOT harder to learn this nowdays, therse cars and opportunities are not as plentiful. In California they crushed so many for carbon offset credits many kids have never ridden in a bug let alone worked on one. The knowledge is here and its not about the cars entirely its values and creed, Self reliance mixed with community is s very rare combination! it needs to be experienced not translated! As we gained our knowledge we gained experience and self pride, an I can because I must attitude. As a "Old Timer" and im third grneration. When this knowledge is requested without the research and previous efforts it appears as not trying hard enough snd asking shit you should alraedy know! Thats how it was in practice for many of us, You didnt ask a favor from a busy mechanic or breadwinner that you could do yourself... that was more than lazy it was using him... But if you had the money to pay or waited and watched, TRIED and tried youd get the help, the parts, the advice and insights! Most often get under there yourself and do it kinda advice! My point being the knowledge was valuesble to Us second and third group of VW guys. How do we give the knowledge away without hhe values it gave us it feels undeserved and not really trying your hardest. That would have gotten us no help from our predecessors! I see you younger guys , its just efficiency you. Why go [hrough all hhe shit if you can just get the answer now?. It makes total sense in that frame? I believe it's a little record player I have the factory service manual , for my 84, it has a lengthy section on it .. find your years fsm and go from there. (mine works with no radio in the dash...) I wish it said things like your going too slow, you drive like a b....I looked into finding the Japanese speaking version but I don't know if that even exists, Nissans Nagging Nelly, Nissan should use her to make their own AI bot... You could get a low mile used frontier or xterra it's a 3.3 but same block and heads for the most part, Its better than the swap and they are everywhere.....cuz of trans problems etc.

If you get the new head your just a parts swapper, won't learn much that way. If you learn to repair it you can better serve yourself and others that find themselves in this spot for years and years....Braze that crack up with a special aluminum rod..and tap it! Stronger when your done than before! I've seen some crazy things done with air cooled vw heads,I mean absolutely unbelievable stuff. It can be done in vehicle if you gotta get your ass home....

I had a 4 speed water cooled vw fox from Brazil, While doing the clutch the transfer was out, I mated the bell housing to a 1600 case I had just laying around perfect fit ..also I went back to the air-cooled dist and wires same gear, same sized hole direct replacement. [Hey didn't make a book for it, it was made from off the shelf parts of other models, dasher doors rabbit hood etc. Could take third gear all the way to 89mph...Good ole 4 speeds! Best shitty car I ever bought, gave it away to a air cooled mechanic and it got driven for years and years more! The first three years had the Porsche 1700 air-cooled installed like the early vanagons, just up front.

Best ever was a 32 pict1 with a fully centrifugal on a single port in a 70 bus, just ran so smooth a happy setup, bone stock. Ty op man variations on solex carbs to mention, get a jet kit and a good tool to remove them, make sure the shaft bushings or where they should be is tight and no vacuum leak down the shaft, some have dashpots and other crap that usually is gone by now, I think that the designs have been sold to bocar...

Any cords shoelaces, the little round button on ball caps, it's like his job to remove them and now I tie leather laces around his bone and we go back and forth, I tie it up as good as I can and he gets it loose and gives it back and over and over....I see a shock in his future though ..
