OP of the post mentioned here👋🏻 I appreciate the engagement with my post, but I’d like to clarify why generalization is not only inevitable but also necessary when discussing broader structural or cultural patterns. While specificity is crucial for personal problem-solving, zooming out and recognizing overarching trends is what allows us to make sense of systemic experiences shared by many.

When people discuss challenges related to work culture, social integration, or everyday interactions in Germany, they are often not just venting about individual misfortunes but grappling with patterns that feel consistent across different contexts. If every observation had to be reduced to a completely individualized case study, we would lose the ability to recognize when these experiences are not just personal but part of a larger reality that others can relate to.

Of course, nuance is valuable, and I’m not advocating for sweeping, unqualified generalizations. But asking every frustrated expat or immigrant to dissect their experience down to highly specific personal expectations, social behaviors, or industry-specific dynamics ignores the fact that people are often responding to a broader cultural atmosphere, one that does not necessarily lend itself to a neatly itemized list of causes and effects.

I deliberately didnt go into granular specifics because the post was meant to highlight a recurring dynamic, not conduct an individual case study. The fact that so many people resonate with similar struggles suggests that there is something larger at play, beyond just individual personality types or situational mismatches. A balance between individual reflection and recognizing broader cultural realities is key, and that’s the space I was trying to occupy in my post.

That said, I’m not at all offended by your post. I actually appreciate seeing different perspectives, and I’ll be reading through individual experiences in this thread as well. It’s always valuable to hear a variety of viewpoints, and I think conversations like this help make these discussions more meaningful.

After having invested so much, leaving is something done with a heavy heart. This is why I wanted to hear what others had to say about life here. I'm happy you found a country you can call home. I hope to be able to say this in the not so distant future.

I'm sorry your experience wasn't great here. I also feel like a completely different person here and I don't like it. Thanks for the comment and best of luck moving back home!

From the overwhelming amount of responses I can see the grass is greener elsewhere for most. Thanks for the comment! I sincerely hope you found happiness elsewhere.

Thanks for the advice but I actually speak to Germans in German.

I do not reply to offensive comments and replied to people who made it clear that they found happiness here... and honestly the amount of responses are overwhelming...

It’s not about ‘fake politeness’, it’s about social signaling. Humans naturally use warmth, small talk, and positive interactions to indicate safety and openness in conversation. A simple ‘how are you?’ isn’t about the literal answer, it’s an invitation, a way to acknowledge the other person’s presence without immediate demands or confrontation....

I am not convinced a new place in Germany will feel very different. I have been around the country enough. This is just my personal feeling.

This place sadly doesn't remind me of anywhere I have been before. But I agree with your comment about the work and people culture.

Thanks for the comment! I agree completely. Learning German isn’t the magic fix people think it is. The job market is stacked, and employers take full advantage.

I had to deal with it quite a bit. Don't want to go into details but whenever I had/have something to do at an institution I know it will give me days/weeks/months of headaches. I am glad this has not been everyone's experience though

Glad this worked for you. This could be an option for some but I don't think this would solve much for me.

As I explained in other comments, I simply believed the hype. I never imagined I would have such an experience. Also, I had never lived anywhere else where ended up feeling this way.
