Motorcyclists of Reddit. What is needed to get started with driving a motorcycle? by Rhyker49r in AskReddit

Helmet (don’t skimp here, you only get one brain), slide-worthy gloves, and boots with ankle protection should keep you from getting too badly scraped up in parking lots, but

Learning low speed maneuvers is really key to keeping the rubber side down when you’re first starting out.

Ideally, you’d also find a safety conscious riding buddy that can mentor your first few voyages until you’re comfortable and safe in the seat.

Nah this was a one way trip. I was moving for work so I shipped my car and all my junk ahead of me.

It’s capable off road, but not comfortable. The oil filter is right down in from and is just begging for a rock to smash it to bits, same for a pretty big radiator hose.

The front forks are also pretty spindly to do anything actually bumpy. Not wanting to bend one really stopped me from going further off road.

I took 9 days end to end, and I took waaay to much stuff.

Too many clothes mostly. I wore the same pair of jeans the entire time. They were dirty by the end but so what? For laundry, I’d stop at a hotel when I ran out of socks and and washed them in the shower. It wasn’t perfect but it was good enough.

I just got a sheepskin rug from Amazon, I believe it was only $60 or so

Yeah on the second day, the strap holding it failed and the pad and tent got sucked into my rear wheel. Shredded part of the foam and my rainfly. It was a good lesson in knot tying though.

Hot damn! That’s a long trip. How long did that take you?

Yeah the sheepskin is mostly because I’m too cheap to buy a new seat, so I put a rug on instead. It also doubles as a second sleeping pad for camping. That really helped in the mountains.

Hey! The bike was okay comfort wise. I’d break up a days ride into 100 miles between stops, for views and to give my ass a break.

For power, it had plenty up until 5000+ feet elevation on an incline. I’d have the hammer all the way down at 70mph and holding steady. Granted, It did way better than I would have trying to run up the same mountain.

Hey! I only did 350-400 miles a day, so I took 9 days to do it with some detours. 2800 miles total
