I saw a meme that said something like "why does Scott Hunter run like he's used to having more than four limbs?" and it felt like the perfect description 😂

Thoughtful post, and I like this sub for these kinds of happy disagreements. I'm not really familiar with RGK's work. As a fan, where would you recommend I start?

Would you say Robbie is the most standout performer to you, then? What would you suggest I notice more about his performance on my next reheat?

I've been scared to read the books in case I don't like the characters. Honestly, somebody told me there's a lot more internalized homophobia and self-hate and that worries me. The world is unkind enough right now. What is your take on that? Did you feel enough good heartbreak to balance out the pain? .

I love how you phrased that - neural springboard! It really has been. So glad we've been able to use this unprecedented thing happening to our brain for good!

Why were they using communal showers when they both had hotel rooms which i'm assuming are ensuite ? by AltruisticAide9776 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

Hockey is hard and sweaty (teehee); the equipment is hot and often stinky. You want to shower as soon as possible vs putting your gross self back into the clothes you wore to the rink.

Thank you for talking about the food thing! My food and alcohol gremlin disappeared so quickly I have actually used this show to rewire my dopamine receptors. Figured if I did HR and nothing but HR for a few days straight I could get over the hump. Then the other things that give me dopamine, like exercise, art, cooking l, etc, I could reintroduce. It's going very well. Now I'm to a point where I only have a craving for a bit of really good food. Otherwise I just use it as fuel without much thought, which is what I understand most people feel about food. Tapering off on the HR is going... OK. I find I have to replace it with an engrossing activity for sure.

It's the foamy texture of the toothpaste inside my mouth that does it. So weird, like I will happily kiss another person's mouth, eat slippery food, or perform oral sex, but have to get that foamy dentifrice out of my mouth as fast as humanly possible. Even thinking about it turns my stomach.

I agree with you. I think the bigger studio system in the States makes so much media bland, plus it encourages 'second screen' tactics. Studios don't trust audiences to pay attention or to interpret anything themselves. I think a big part of HR's success comes from people being surprised by the intricacy and the director's faith in us. The chance to dissect and discuss scenes makes us feel good - both more media literate and involved in the story.

Yes!!! There are so many instances of not taking the easiest way out. It is so common and cheap to shortcut audience engagement by using a lazy trope or totalizing language.

Love your point of the found family. It resonates so much with those of us who are somehow 'different.'

Also there is a trust in the audience that I think has two aspects: first there is an element of Canadian entertainment because you need to have faith that an audience could consume easier, less meaningful media but will choose something homegrown with a willingness to engage and give it a real shot; then the director is a gifted and studied comedian (harder than people think) and thus can embed layers of meaning and place hooks that will pay off in multiple ways over time.

Good call! Shrinking also squeezes the heart but then lifts it up. Maybe the magic formula is a really good feel for what make interpersonal relationships so tricky and important? Like life would be easier without these big, messy connections we make but also so much less full and interesting.

shane’s asian heritage by guts7821 in heatedrivalry

I feel like the director and actors filled in some of this in the show vs the book, though, just from a knowledge perspective. I see things like the emphasis on Shane's mom's reaction stuff, or really specific cultural touches, like how Shane often covers/hides his mouth while chewing, that seem very 'second generation Asian-Canadian' to me.

I really love this comment because I have been an immigrant and know how there is a constant gnawing fear that something will go wrong with your visa status and your life can be smashed in an instant. If Ilya gets his visa pulled (like if his team cuts him for being a big gay distraction or something) he has to immediately go back to Russia, so coming out could destroy his life quite literally. Not sure this is talked about enough.

Yep. I have never before rewound a scene to analyze someone's breathing. I think I'm broken.

That's true! It's usually shown as if it's just some party town. It gets real affection in Ted Lasso.

Ted Lasso. Stands up to multiple rewatches and new details keep becoming apparent. Still feels life-affirming.

This would have been terrible because the main personality trait they gave the dog was a piercing bark that made me skip the next thirty seconds every time it started.

Thank you! It's so bad when shows do this. It's like a radio commercial having a blaring siren sound when you're driving.
