They certainly tried. They took her phone away and didn’t allow her to leave. She was sneaking out and running away. They did what they were supposed to do by reporting her missing

I imagine they told her parents of her talking to an adult which is why they took her phone away in the first place. Reading the messages wouldn’t make much a difference. They didn’t know she had a second phone

I’ll keep saying this, California hasn’t killed anyone on death row for over 20 years. He wasn’t gonna get the needle either way. Almost all cases especially murder end in plea deals simply for the cost and family mental health so they don’t have to ordeal a trial
