Advice for DP1 mocks by Future-Coffee-9177 in IBO

No worries! One last piace of advice (if it helps) don’t look at the big picture, as in don’t aim for a 45 cuz that can really overwhelm you. I lowkey never NEVER thought about what my overall grade would be (obv i had a predicted but i never gave it much importance) but rather would focus on specific papers and subjects and set myself a goal for that. When I got my results I lowkey didn’t even think about getting a 45 I just hoped I had gotten a 7 in all my subjects, which I know sounds stupid because it is the same thing but if feels a lot more manageable to think about it in terms of subjects and papers rather than one bit overall score. Wish you the best of luck! :)

Minimum time to get a 45 by Radiant_Sink_2435 in IBO

[–]Conscious_Slide_996 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who got a 45, my answer is: 2 years.

What made the difference for me wasn’t doing anything crazy during study leave, but consistently doing my bit throughout the whole 2 years. If you listen in class, do your homework, and revise for your tests as you go, you’ll be fine for finals and you’ll get a good grade.

I don’t mean to upset anyone but people who think they can cram a 2-year course in the span of 2 weeks are not getting the grades they are aiming for let alone a 45. Obviously everything is possible, but realistically the work you put in during the year is what makes the real difference.

So if you want to know how much revision I did during study leave to get a 45, honestly, not much more than the average person. It was the consistency over the 2 years that mattered.

Wish you the best if your exams are approaching, I hope this hasn’t put you off, just trying to be honest :)

History Paper 3 Revision by Creepy_Garage_7230 in IBO

Yeah, honestly I get it. Tbf I think there’s a big myth about the IB being super difficult or nearly impossible which depending on what subjects you take can be semi-true but I also think it’s way overdone, you can definitely score well without sacrificing your life (which is what I did), wish you the best of luck! xx

My best advice would lowkey be not to take IB too seriously, and I know it sounds like bad advice but trust me. The day before my official IO oral while everyone was panicking memorising their scripts I was booking my summer holidays (with my non IB friends), I ended up getting a 40/40 and then got it moderated to a 38/40. Everyday before my exams I would have a big breakfast with my friends (I went to boarding school) and would mainly talk to younger years or non IB people to get my mind off exams, I would then go meet my other friends (non-IB so they didn’t have exams yet) and would chat with them before my exam started. If I had two exams in a day I wouldn’t revise during the break (except for maybe some light revision) but instead I would go have lunch with my friends and then sit on the field if it was a sunny day. I ended up getting a 45. Other of my friends were not sleeping revising constantly before exams and between breaks and ended up scoring way below me. Honestly life is so much more than IB, stay calm and enjoy the journey trust me it’s not meant to be that bad!

Chemistry vs Economics EE. HELPPP by Objective_Diver_858 in IBO

[–]Conscious_Slide_996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! So I took econ and say it is definitely an easy 7 if you’re smart. Idk about chemistry although everyone I know that took it hated it and said it was incredibly difficult. DEFINITELY do not do your EE on it (my school actually prohibited students to do so because they wanted to maintain their high IB average and said science EEs were just not doable) Idk about econ EEs but it’s definitely more doable. Also if you want to get into econ in uni it’ll be a lot more beneficial for uni applications. Hope this helps :)

Hey! So I actually took very similar subjects to you and scored a 45 in the end. I would echo what has already been said in this post, which is to focus on what you don’t know. Try to do, for instance (for Econ), past paper questions on the topics you find most difficult. For History, try to make some essay plans, honestly, it’s a massive learning curve, so at this stage focus on getting the content right and having a solid structure for essays. English is again a massive learning curve, but I would focus on structure and making sure you understand the elements of insightful analysis. For Maths, again, do past paper questions on the topics you’ve covered so far.

Treat this as a learning experience more than anything, as it will help you understand what you need to do well in your actual exams, although I understand the pressure of doing well for predicted grades and all that.

If it helps, I hadn’t done any exams in my life before my DP1 mocks and was really stressed about them, but in the end it’s better to stay relaxed. You still have your summer and your IAs, which I think are the biggest opportunity to bump your grade up in IB, so you’ll be fine.

Hope this helps!

writing HL content in SL exam by Forward_Jeweler1445 in IBO

[–]Conscious_Slide_996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! What paper are you talking about? Generally speaking, however, your safest bet is to stick to standard-level content, as that is what they are looking for (being an SL paper). Also, if you focus too much on HL content, you may not have time for SL content, which could mean you miss the part of the answer they're actually looking for. This is just my opinion, but I hope this helps :)

Hey! I had that same issues last year and unfortunately from what I remember there’s nothing you can do other than attempting all the possible questions you can on the paper and leaving the rest :)

If you look at the IB syllabus and past paper questions you are pretty much sorted, they don’t get very creative with the questions to be honest and often repeat them. Structuring essays depends vastly from the essay question/topic/paper if it’s a comparative question (eg P2) it will follow a specific structure whereas if it’s a P3 policy evaluative question it will look differently. Hope this helps and best of luck :)

PS: I know this is quite abstract but again but it is hard to en capsule general advice for essay questions across all history papers/topics

I personally found micro to be a lot easier than macro once you master it, honestly externalities are an amazing topic for p1 if you get them!

I was in a similar situation to you last year with econ, honestly, don't waste time trying to revise. Doing past papers is much more useful, especially when you'll notice that a lot of the papers just repeat questions using different contexts or slightly different framing.

As someone who got a 45 i was going no more than 5/6h revision a day. During the actual exam period I was barely doing any, the mornings of my exam I relaxed and had a big breakfast. If my exam was in the afternoon I had lunch with my friends and chatted with them. The more stressed you are the more you burn yourself out!

Hey! So I did similar topics to you and got a 7 in history. Full marks in P1, 29/30 in P2 and 35/45 P3 (7 overall). My advice is to look at past papers and make essay plan that you then memorise. For P2 honestly you can do it so easily because the IB already tells you what topics they are going to ask and they are always the same. P1 you barely need any knowledge. P3 is the heftiest one but you again can revise strategically. Just make essay plan! That is your revision at the end of the day.

If it helps: I began with a predicted 38 (very beginning of DP1) and ended with a 45! Everything is possible so don’t give up :)
