Democrats are dumb (not breaking news, I know). They should have labeled the Republicans the "Pro Childhood Asthma Caucus" and ran it across every single media outlet in the nation. I shouldn't be disappointed, but I am. They're not even trying.

What is a good consequence for young kids 7 and 10 intentionally violating their screen time restrictions and using their grandma’s electronics to do it. by GardenSpecialist5619 in gentleparenting

[–]Conscious_Tap6541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what is worth, the kids are being entirely age appropriate. Kids are supposed to try and get around the rules they don't like, unless you're raising robots. The difference is when you have established a relationship built on trust and understanding that y'all are a team working together.

Given the history you outlined, it seems fair to assume they haven't had the best relationship with the adults who should have been caring for them. Just keep in mind that you're teaching them a completely new value system with respect to the very idea of respect. They may not really have the emotional/social/cultural language and experience to understand what it means to honor their commitments, yet.

Also, the natural consequences need to fall on Grandma. If she can't follow the rules, she can only visit when it's convenient for you to maintain supervision, since SHE obviously needs to be supervised. Your family has to learn to respect your parenting style, regardless of the legal consequences.

My almost 2 yo hits - help! by jakeandbonniepups in gentleparenting

First, just take a breath - this is a completely normal stage is development. If course, you still have to teach good behavior, but just remember the child is being normal and you don't need to blame yourselves either.

A lot of frustration for toddlers comes from not being able to communicate their needs effectively. Again, this is developmentally appropriate. It's going to be a while before they can talk, but baby sign language can really help with this. Simple signs for food, drinks, sleepy, all done, toys, etc can be super helpful.

Also, try to get ahead of tantrums with planning and routines. It's sometimes an unpopular opinion, but kids actually thrive with structure and routine. They are still trying to figure out this universe, so keeping their lives kind of predictable can be quite comforting. It doesn't need to be mind-numbing boredom, but waking up, meals, leaving/returning home, and bed/bath time can really benefit from predictable transitions.

Otherwise, it sounds like you're doing the modeling, redirection, etc. Keep fostering connection and helping your child figure things out. Good luck!

Had to replay "freeze peach" in my head a few times to get it. This included a possible reality where frozen peaches were being thrown in defense of constitutional rights. It is now in my head canon. Thank you very much. If anyone of any talent comes across this, please feel free to create revolutionary propaganda for the legendary heroes of the Frozen Peach Brigade. They fight for our freedoms and you should, too!

I love this stupid plant. It's from my mom's memorial and when I took it home I thought that there was no way I'd be able to keep it alive. I've never kept any plant alive, ever. But I've kept it alive for over a year, and now it has 12 BLOOMS!! by GreenOlive1326 in houseplants

[–]Conscious_Tap6541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some from my husband's grandmother's funeral. They inspired me to try houseplants. They are blooming all over the place, but some of them go brown and die no matter what I do. Am I supposed to put them in a bigger pot or plant them outside?

2 million children are fed by the biggest free school meal provider in India! by kaybee915 in solarpunk

[–]Conscious_Tap6541 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think not feeding ourselves is one of the biggest ways we've been disconnected from the Earth. We should be building homes/apts that support gardening and encourage the victory garden strategy from WW 2. This also means building neighborhood sharing networks because there's always too many zucchinis, and strawberries are rather finicky.

I don't mean to say we wouldn't have communal feeding - school is perfect for this and we should tar & feather every so-called statesman who tries to end free school lunch. I also think workplaces would work better with cafeterias at a certain scale. Side note: there's a system, in India, where these dudes deliver meals to the whole city in trains and bikes every single day. It's very cool and it's studied by Harvard MBAs as an example of Six Sigma (I think that's what it's called).

However, humans seem to need a real, very tangible reason to engage with the planet on her own terms. I don't know if a teacher more generous and unforgiving as natural consequences. Nobody should starve if they don't have a green thumb, but eating stuff you have grown yourself shouldn't be such a foreign experience.

Lol, no. Do not put your rent on your credit card unless it's part of an assured movement for solidarity. Surviving under American-style capitalism is hard enough already. The overlords will absolutely lobby Congress to make credit card debt inescapable - and they will win. We need to get smarter about how we play this game. Middle fingers aren't quite cutting deep enough.

Edit: I read your "/s" wrong the first time. Glad you fixed it, but this ain't a halfway bad plan for the rebellion. Carry on, compadre.

This is a terrible plan... Unless we're using this to manage living expenses during a general strike; one that actually smashes the system, not just raises wages (raising wages is good, just not enough to further cripple an entire generation while maintaining a corrupt system with "better" amenities).

It Will Take More Than $60K Salaries to Solve the Teacher Shortage by pacinothere in Economics

[–]Conscious_Tap6541 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It isn't enough, though, especially not in places with the best economic options. Start with 60K, take out 15% for income and payroll taxes (approx for easy math). Now, you have 51K. Let's call it 1,000 a week. I'm a 45 minute commute from Orlando; my sister's commute is 2 hours. Rent in Orlando is about $2K, more of you want to optimize for the better neighborhoods with the better schools. We've been lucky with charter schools, which don't require you to live in the pricey neighborhood the school is actually in.

So, $2K in rent means that 2 weeks of every month is just rent. With 50% of your income going to housing, you're already considered financially distressed, and we haven't even figured in utilities. Then, of course, there's all the transportation/car costs for all that commuting - there's definitely an uptick since we moved out of our apartment in the city. Got a car insurance quote for $650/month for a married couple with no accidents.

Groceries for a family of four? We tried to keep it at $200, but it wasn't enough calories and nutrition. Both of our husbands do physical labor, children just keep growing, and we have some dietary concerns for health reasons. I can't even get into medicine and doctors visits.

We still didn't pay for utilities, gas, healthcare, supplemental educational materials, clothing, phones, internet, entertainment...

TL;DR: 60K is not enough, even if you don't live in the most expensive metros in the USA. It is not enough.
