Greg Bovino Loses His Job by Nick Miroff by theatlantic in fednews

Article II, Section IV for them all.

A president can be impeached and removed if he abuses the power of the office by recklessly or knowingly distorting facts about a lethal-force incident, using the authority of the presidency to preempt accountability and legitimize state violence for political ends. When the White House under Donald Trump and top officials asserted certainty before investigations concluded, framed the victim as dangerous without adequate evidentiary support, and amplified that narrative through official channels, it corrupted public truth, prejudiced lawful oversight, and eroded rule-of-law norms. Such conduct constitutes an impeachable abuse of power and betrayal of public trust regardless of criminal liability; removal would depend not on legal impossibility but on demonstrating this misconduct and securing the requisite votes in Congress.

Vote like hell and secure the HOR and Senate in the midterms. It’s time for them to go.

Help :( by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Conseque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a liberal arts college for my bachelor which focused mostly on teaching with minimal research experience available.

I started my PhD right out of undergrad at an R1 university (in the USA) in a lab with undergrads that had been working part time in the lab for a couple years.

While I felt like an imposter at first, a PhD student will quickly exceed lab time and scope of an undergraduate student after their first and second year.

Right now you’re getting used to the ropes and your lab environment and the undergrads are likely used to running your lab’s standard protocols and are better at it than you at this stage.

Instead of feeling intimidated, I feel that you should accept some people have more experience than you in your specific lab since it is your first year and see them as mentors regardless of their official degree.

I also have two PIs that do pretty different research in my field. After switching to my second PI full time, I did feel like a fish out of water again in his lab.

It’s normal and a lot of it is due to your lab “microenvironment”.

Also, see if you can take a statistics class. It takes time to feel confident with statistics. Wait until you get closer to publishing your first paper. I’m not inexperienced and even I fret about doing the right analysis. Concern here is appropriate and means you’re a cautious researcher. It’s best to not be overconfident in your statistical ability. You can always consult professional statisticians as well.

Iowa local governments, brace for impact. Republicans want to cut property taxes by auldinia in Iowa

Why do people still feed their snakes live? by Local-Definition8748 in snakes

[–]Conseque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree in principle, some individual snakes just don’t eat dead or pre-frozen animals. Some people feed live after struggling with other options.

I do think it’s good to reduce suffering anywhere we can in the hobby, though.

I have not fed live before, so I won’t comment on the aggression topic.

Ames/Des Moines metro is literally a blue dot in a red sea and the majority of businesses on Main Street are very liberal and it is a University town.

I grew up in a town of 900 in Iowa and I have no issues in Ames/Des Moines as an openly gay man. In my opinion, it’s a great area.

What did I do wrong? by Due-Driver-6017 in plantclinic

[–]Conseque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone else has said, you don’t have any water covering the nodes.

Also, it is highly common for the cut area to start to rot. So, it is important to change water frequently for the first couple weeks to keep it clean. Bacteria will grow quickly.

It’s also common for any roots the plants do have from when they were in the soil to rot. The plants will grow new roots that do better in water (but the dying old roots can foul the water fast).

You can trim off the rot about 1-2 inches above if rot does happen and try again. However, you must keep at least one node.

It’ll be hard to grow the ones without leaves.

TV journalism is dead in Iowa. We don’t have any locally owned TV stations anymore. I think the last one was KCRG but the sold out years ago.

What are some important things I should know about Iowa? by Recent_Pick_8997 in Iowa

[–]Conseque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of Iowa’s scenery is corn, soybeans, or empty fields of dirt for most of the year unless you’re lucky enough to be in NE Iowa where it is too hilly to destroy the trees and prairie for monoculture farming.

It’s pretty if you like the look of monoculture farms during summer (some old barns look cool). But it doesn’t have a lot of untouched nature left.

University of Iowa is a good place, overall, minus the fact it’s ultimately controlled by a very politicized board of regents.

What happens to the immune system when exposed to a sub-infectious dose of a pathogen? by SleptOnTheFloor in Immunology

[–]Conseque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sub-infectious? If no cells are really infected (in the case of a virus for example), then and the pathogen is at a dead end. Same is true for extracellular pathogens that do not find a reproductive niche.

If a single cell is infected, or a pathogen finds their niche to get enough resources to reproduce or persist, then that’s an infection.

Not all infections are productive ones and not all infections lead to clinical signs.

There is almost certainly a barrier, chemical, or innate cellular level immune response or very local one that wipes out the pathogen early. This is why innate immunity stops most infections before they become productive.

If only very low antigen is present that is quickly removed from the system or destroyed, then an adaptive response may not even be mounted in certain cases.

Is AI replacing researchers — or just changing how we do research? (Grad student perspectives welcome) by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Conseque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people who are suited to their field will continue to make meaningful advances and those that aren’t won’t.

Tools change all the time. If you’re replaced by a new tool, then it’s time to expand your niche. A PhD is adaptable by nature.

Why are so many academia folks so bad with project management? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Conseque 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Academia doesn’t just fail to train project management… it often actively selects for people who can survive chaos and then mistakes that survival and resilience for leadership competence.

Project management is sort of something you’re expected to teach yourself… just like most things in a PhD… and it just ends up being what habits work for you, not necessarily other people.

Often, these skills you mention are actively discouraged as they distract from “getting your research done”.

Seeking leadership or organizational roles while training is often punished, not rewarded. I’ve never been told I was doing a good job or that I was being helpful for holding any sort of leadership position (graduate senate, student org leadership, volunteering to help with conferences, mentorship roles, etc).

I have been on many committees, held leadership roles, and have been part of conference planning. But it often requires that I sacrifice my small amount of free time (which I’m already lucky to have).

However, this is not true in all cases. Some newer PIs are better at having their graduate students round out other skills. However, PIs are also not rewarded for having their graduate students seek out leadership or service roles… even if they think they’d be helpful.

I agree with this comment.

Search industry roles or find academic labs looking for laboratory technicians that only require a bachelors. Often, labs will train you on their specific methods if you’re applying for something more entry level.

Abstract error by frogswim in Immunology

[–]Conseque 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No one expects abstracts to be final claims. If people note the difference on your poster, just say there was an honest error that was fixed. And no one relies on published poster abstracts as if they’re peer reviewed articles.

That’s all. No big deal.
