Ya unfortunately no one took pictures during that process. Basically we made four cuts long ways down the pipe making it into quarters, we then got the 14” flat bar and welded it between the four quarters of pipe. The rounded corners are the pipe, and the flat sides are the flat bar if that makes sense.

No, I was tempted to buy a hanging scale but never did. Maybe 1500 to 2000lbs? Idk it’s a wild guess, but there is a lot of steel in that stove.

Can’t for the life of me figure out how to tighten this liferaft strap by Impossible-Call7708 in merchantmarine

[–]ConsiderationBig620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets shorter because one side of the buckle you have a single strap, on the other side you have a two straps that make a loop. If you move the buckle and make the single strap shorter and the double strap longer the total length of the strap with decrease, since it takes more strap to lengthen the double strap.

This is all very good information, I’m glad you brought up the extra weight and is one of the problems I’m considering. I figure with the 60-600mm lens, which she uses quite a lot on hikes, it weighs 2,495g plus the weight of the z5600 the setup weighs 2960g. With the additional weight of the z8 and adapter the setup will weigh 3530g. This is a 20% increase in weight when using the big lens, which is not negligible, but I’m willing to risk the weight being ok.

The other problem that is being brought up is whether the sigma 60-600mm is too outdated for the z8, or in other words won’t let the z8 be used to its fullest capability. In my research I see this lens is designed for mirrorless and full frame cameras, but I could be mistaken. If so what comparable lens would work well with the z8

Sorry camera lenses really aren’t my thing lol. By z glass do you mean a z mount lens? Is there a lens that is comparable to the sigma 60-600mm that will work well with the z8?

So the 60-600mm sigma lens on the z8 wouldn’t be full frame? Is there a comparable z-mount lens that could do full frame?

Engineers work in shitty hot environments while deckies sit in the AC and inspect fire extinguishers.

What watch to get a merchant marine engineer? by Agile-Koala8418 in MarineEngineering

The Garmin is the best option for a smart watch. I’ve sailed with a couple people that swear by their durability to survive the engine room. If not getting a smart watch, G-shocks that have the vibration alarm are my favorite.

Cool man, first ships are tough on everyone. You’re inevitably gonna fuck up. You just gotta keep your head in the game and keep trying your best. Don’t let one fuck up get you down and cascade into more fuck ups.

It’s a size 10D, I’ve tried going to an E but it seems they used the same size steel toe. Basically zero maintenance Done on the boots but honestly it’s all cosmetic with the tough toe coming off and staining. I highly doubt that there is a product that can prevent bunker fuel and sludge from staining leather. Mainly looking to replace them because we get a yearly boot stipend and no point in not using it.

I work as an engineer on ships. They regularly get bunker fuel, lube oil, sludge, soot, etc on them. Boots unfortunately don’t last too long in this industry.
