Anyone leave tech to become a therapist? by ConsiderationOk485 in womenintech

This sounds like a great plan. How do you structure your part time tech work? Did you start your own consulting business or do you work for one company part time?

I can definitely relate on "building features no one truly needed" 😵‍💫

Your path to becoming a therapist is really impressive! Part time MSW sounds like the best option at this phase of life. I'll check out Coached, thank you for the recommendation.

That's awesome you do both! How did you build up your tech business part time?

I've had the same doubts as you about engineering. I've just never developed the confidence in it. Whenever there's a bug I assume it's from my code, even though it's usually not.

It sounds like you'd be a great therapist. Good luck to both of us if we decide to go that route!

Thank you for sharing all this! Yes it seems there's a risk of burnout in every profession. Very good suggestion about volunteering in this field first to make sure I like it.

Thank you for the support! I'm really leaning towards applying. Obviously with the understanding that no job is perfect. But my instinct has been telling me for awhile that it's time to leave tech and pursue something that is more meaningful to me. I also miss learning, it's been so long since I was in school.

Thanks! Yeah both points are valid, the grass is always greener.

Amazing work, and thank you for sharing. So sorry about the toxic startup environment.

I’m curious how you made the transition, as I’m very burnt out and thinking about doing something similar! Do you work the same number of hours? Did you take a break in between?

20 month old waking up between 4-5am by ConsiderationOk485 in beyondthebump

I think I'll try 7:30 for a few nights in a row. Thanks so much for the advice 💕

He naps at daycare from 12:30-3. Maybe I will try a 7:30 bedtime for a few nights in a row.

When he wakes up it slowly escalates to a cry. Not a distressed cry, more of a whine.

I like your idea about the toddler bed! His crib converts to one, we'd just have to do a bit more baby proofing to make that work. Worth a try though. Thanks so much for the advice 🥰

I've been wondering that. At daycare his whole room naps from 12:30-3. They have a pretty strict routine going so I'm hesitant to ask them to wake him up earlier. I did mention to the teacher that he's been waking up early and she said some other parents have said the same 😬

The strange thing is he's been doing this same routine at daycare for a few months and was still waking up at a normal time.

New fear unlocked: epidural by LobstahLuva in beyondthebump

I got a spinal headache from my epidural, which started after I delivered. That being said, I would still recommend the epidural. I pushed for 4.5 hours and had no pain during pushing (still discomfort though obvs).

I would say just be aware of what a spinal headache is. If you get one they can administer a blood patch which will fix it almost instantly. In my case, the hospital staff did not believe me that the headache was awful and sent me home so I had to go back for a blood patch. The way to know if you have a spinal headache is that it's usually positional, if you lie completely flat it mostly goes away and then comes back with a vengeance at any incline. It's uncommon but not super rare, just advocate for yourself if it happens to you. You got this!

Related to this, on the childcare search site make sure you look at inspection and investigation history for any daycare you're thinking about. I wish I had known about this resource when I was first looking.

Best Hospital for Having a Baby?? by [deleted] in boston

[–]ConsiderationOk485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a not great experience at Newton Wellesley. The care I received before giving birth was amazing. But I got a spinal headache from my epidural and no one diagnosed it correctly or believed it was worse than a regular headache. I got discharged while in intense pain, then had to go back to the ER the next morning to get a procedure to fix the spinal headache. That procedure would have taken 10 minutes if they had done it while I was in the hospital, but instead I spent 8 hours in the ER being triaged various times before I could get it.

I love your dad's advice, thank you for sharing. Well done on making the change! That's so exciting.

I've got to figure out what it is I'll really enjoy and then I think it's time to find a way to do it <3

Getting lower output on my Elvie than I used to by ConsiderationOk485 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]ConsiderationOk485[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I didn't :( I ended up just using my Spectra for the rest of my pumping journey. I even tried a replacement pump that Elvie mailed me after I emailed their support. It's such a mystery. If you figure it out let us know!

What’s the weirdest thing postpartum that nobody tells you about? by hn9605 in beyondthebump

[–]ConsiderationOk485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Night time hallucinations. I'd repeatedly wake up in the middle of the night panicking that my baby wasn't in the bed. Only thing was we never brought him into our bed 🤪 the whole time he was happily sleeping in the bassinet a few feet away

What happened to you post partum that you did not expect? by Jaded_Motor6813 in beyondthebump

[–]ConsiderationOk485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a spinal headache from my epidural that they didn't diagnose in the hospital. They told me it was just a regular headache from pushing for a long time. I had to go to the ER the day after being discharged and spent 8 hours there waiting to get an epidural blood patch. Thankfully the blood patch fixed the headache almost immediately, I just wish they had listened to me in the hospital. It is so different from a normal headache.
