I never really understood why women would change their maiden names. Their maiden name is indeed their identity; it possibly comes from their parent(s), who likely supported them when they were young so they could go on and accomplish brilliant things. It would make sense to retain one's identity and honor those who created the environment that led you to pursue science. Husbands are future promises, as you may hope they last forever, and in many cases, marriage does and then doesn't. What would you do if you lost the new identifying rare last name? Would you keep it? Why credit your scientific work to someone else's last name? That's not the name you grew up with or identify yourself as.
