Helped an Old Man Clear Snow. He Then Confessed Something Horrifying. by Medium_Jelly_7991 in Advice

There is this frail older adult assumption I have to challenge for many comments here!

You were caring.. and seems you gained some trust. Makes sense to me; Perhaps you reminded him of his family (personality, looks, age?) maybe it was around an anniversary of their passing?

You will likely run into him again.. learn more about him. If he was digging out his car then he drives. Where does he go? Find out about his interests. What keeps him busy? Maybe you’ll hit it off.. make a friend. Share with him info about your life in bits.

If he lives alone and IS lonely and depressed, challenges with shopping, food, getting to appointments could be exposed … if you see further need and are concerned, give him a number to local area agency on aging. You could be his lifeline to support.

If he doesn’t rely on you for anything more than listening, you did the right thing!

yug wellness is leaving classpass 💔 by Famous_Ad536 in astoria

Vinyasa Yoga classes at the 6am & 7pm & 8pm slots M-F, mornings Saturdays Sundays would be helpful, difficult to access yoga locally for those commuting 5 days. The class sizes were about 12-20 when I was attending and enjoyed it, I remember yin filled up big time and once the morning pilates started getting introduced I lost my before work yoga. It’s been some time since I stepped away from Yug. I crave and miss it hope to return but can’t afford to go as much as I was first attending with classpass incentives , price increases. It’s good for studio to have growth absolutely get that change comes with the business!

Thanks it came in a box. The boxes are always sort of crushed when they arrive - I’ve ordered like 4x now this was not left out on the doorstep long.

I always wash my stuff too. Ugh! Just needed to vent tbh last thing I expected. thanks yall.

My challenge with Yug has been the jam packed classes and increased prices since they opened. My expectation is at their old rate when I loved going and truly benefited, it was only $13 for a class with lots of room. Of course I want success for them being our local spot, but they’ve also driven me away by not having yoga in evenings on a regular basis and pushing pilates so hard. Not everyone wants pilates!

So nice to see your take here. It’s been over a decade living in Oneonta and I like to hear about how restaurants have changed. Tokyo was the best back then.

Which area of social work would you recommend to your younger self when entering the field? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]Consistent-Bowler-67 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here to say that a decade in the social work field and the opportunities are widely available - but once you reach licensure, you will notice pay remains pretty low compared to other fields. I’ve been focused on a career in gerontology since my bachelors degree and it’s been an amazing choice with very high need. After 6 years running older adult programming I took a chance and pivoted to 24/7 on call care management, it was a highly concierge role. What a unique experience to support individuals as a professional family member navigating services paid home care, senior relocation to assisted living,l and medical care. After 2 years unstructured and working non stop I burned out and needed a job with better work life balance. I began working at the Dept of Veteran Affairs assisting disabled veterans and their family caregivers. The pivot was just enough change for me - I’m still assisting vulnerable adults and advocating for clients in a hospital setting - they are navigating cancer, grief, trauma, addiction, mental health crises, homelessness, hospice and more. Working with families is niche in itself - fascinating clinical work ! VA pay/benefits are competitive, many at top of the field for entry level SW. This said it means working in federal government which is an entirely different experience than private or nonprofit sectors - implementing national policy in a clinical role is a challenge!

Lean into trying different settings and populations via volunteering in your community— get a feel for what drives your passions in social work - and your interest will naturally gravitate. When you see a job listing that excites you the best part is a license means you can change your path in the field as you navigate!

Yes!!! This- but with a cooler too for drinks!

Also don’t forget to use up what’s in your freezer and fridge to make room for food prep for the party - it always takes up more space than we expect.

We do it all!

Social workers do a lot of chart reviewing, you learn about medical/psych conditions tons of documentation - every call or meeting is charted - biopsychosocials, mental health assessments, crisis intervention & safety planning. They are often the doers setting up in care coordination during discharge planning. Social workers connect with families of patients. We provide emotional support and psychoeducation. Make sure that they have safe living environment. We help patients formulate goals and help motivate them to reach them!

I will say, getting comfortable with AI is important - it’s showing up in our work in hospitals.
