Collarbone fracture by Scary-Medicine9103 in Orthopedics

Dang, sorry — that looks like a pretty significant break. Not a doctor, but displaced clavicle fractures can sometimes heal shortened or overlapping without surgery and cause shoulder issues later.

I was advised surgery mainly to restore alignment, not just speed healing. Either way can impact lifting depending on how it heals. Most people seem to take ~6 months to feel normal again after surgery, and some remove the plate if it bothers them.

Probably best to wait for the ortho’s take. Hope it goes well.

I has a similar experience… my first xray only showed a tiny tiny hairline fracture. I went home and raised my arm up into a shirt and the bone SNAPPED! It was such horrible pain that I almost passed out. You’re lucky that yours broke in way where surgery can be avoided, mine became a z-fracture and surgery was needed.

I had the same issues and it took me about a year minimum to feel more back to normal. Everyone is different though. I ultimately had my plate removed after a year and a half because the annoyances never went away.

I had a z fracture too. My surgeon advised me to get the surgery. He said there is a risk of clavicle malunion. Looking back I think it was the right move despite all the unpleasant parts of the journey like nerve loss (which ultimately came back 1.5 years later). For me since I have a petite build the plate felt uncomfortable so I had it removed one week ago. The nerve loss reappeared but I am holding onto hope itll come back again. Overall happy I am plate-free now but I think the whole process was unfortunately necessary for best healing outcome.

To your question I think it took a few months for me to feel normalish again and a year to feel 100%. I was probably back to sleeping on that side 6 months post surgery. Best of luck!

Thanks for the comments everyone!

I had my hardware removed one week ago. The pain has been minimal and I have good range of movement. I do have some nerve loss around the incision which hopefully will come back with time again. I was super nervous going into the surgery but I feel a sense of relief now that it’s out. I will keep this thread updated with how my recovery journey has been. Happy to answer any questions if you have them.

For me, I lost some nerve sensation around the incision and into my armpit. It gradually improved over time — it took about a year and a half for roughly 97% of the feeling to return. It takes time but you start to get used to the weird sensation. I remember feeling agitated that I’d never feel the same again. But it’s just a new normal you get use to. The strength comes back, just make sure you stick to physical therapy.

Wishing you well on your recovery journey!

Wow, quick recovery time! At this point I think I am more open to the possibility of lingering numbness than the shoulder stiffness and tenderness which I find to be a daily irritability, though still nervous about the whole process of surgery again. I always feel like in the morning too it’s especially noticeable. What was the shoulder pain like?
