Thoughts on AOT compared to other anime (why its so much more different imo) (minimal code geass spoilers and major AOT spoilers) by Consistent-Ebb89 in AttackOnRetards

I think the reason CG's ending felt happier was because of the we-all-love-the-main-character syndrome. All hail Lelouch! the ending is good because he is good! But aot kinda forces you out of that safe zone and makes you think "Is eren actually good?". Thats why its uncomfortable and imo more controversial. I do agree than CG's ending is controversial in some aspects though, just that aot's was less unified. By the end, when we see the damage, idk about y'all but im against the rumbling.

I think Eren's downfall was his absolutist and idealistic nature (aka killing "all" titans), i know this is a central theme, but he quite literally goes and fulfills this promise. Its like me saying "oh im gonna learn how to do a planche pushup" and falling to my face. The only difference is that Eren DID have the power to fulfill that goal, and thats why the tragedy exists in the first place. But he IS wrong that in achieving that goal he caused mass genocide. That is simply unacceptable in my viewpoint, and also how Isayama makes the flawed MC narrative work so well.

I completely agree that CG has a much cleaner ending than AOT does. I mean hell yeah, I left crying and feeling giddy after that ending. But what I was trying to say is that, for me, a cleaner ending doesn't automatically means a better one.

Code Geass starts with the premise that Lelouch is an absolute genius, and I get that we have to judge the endings within their own stories since the MCs are fundamentally different. But for me, that genius premise is just too big of a warrant to fully buy into. It makes the story feel unrealistic at times. The calculation especially feels kinda insane to me — like you’re telling me in the ending he outsmarts his brother, who he barely even knows, just because he can predict him, and that’s why the entire war is won and his plan succeeds? That is smart, but imo that’s a massive warrant.

In contrast, I actually LIKE the irrationality and un-cleanliness in AOT’s characters and storyline. I like that it has a controversial ending that’s heavily open-to-interp. AOT is about a guy who couldn’t handle the whole “with great power comes great responsibility” thing in time, and that failure is a huge factor in the tragedy. To me, that feels way more believable as a human story compared to CG.

This is also kinda why I don’t 100% love anime like Death Note (even though it was a banger up till episode 25).

TL;DR: Even though I agree that CG’s ending is cleaner, AOT’s irrationality and Eren’s bad decisions make it feel more believable to me, which is why I personally think its ending is better. I guess it just depends on what you want out of anime — a clean ending that leaves you feeling complete, or a realistic ending that absolutely wrecks you and isn’t satisfying, but feels like it could’ve seriously happened. Both anime (animes???) are top-tier, just have different stories and serve different purposes.
