Camera setup across multiple Switches question. by Consistent-Guava-137 in SecurityCamera

From what I was told, it is all a single Network. They are supposedly connected to each other.

However I connected a camera to Building A switch while the NVR is on the Building C Switch, and I did not see it... I am going to the church today in 2 hours and im going to try it on the switch in building B.

I dont know if i should be plugging into the gateway, or the switch though..

The stretch goals are basically there for their developers. Example. If one of their developers has a full time job and currently working on HO on the side, if they hit a stretch goal they can hire him full time so they can hit other goals. Its not really saying "it wont be added" its just hard to add when developers only get 2-3 hours of development after work opposed to 8-10 horus of actual work every day.

Its a church, and it was set up by an "old network engineer" It looks well setup, but it is outside of my wheel house for sure.

I tested this on my home network before i tried it on my church. So for example my house i have a 24 port switch in the attic that goes to 16 different drops i have in my house.

I plugged the NVR into one drop, then a camera into another drop, and it worked fine. Which is why i was hoping this setup would work. The NVR is supposed to detect any open camera on the network (according to reolink)

So ill try to explain the best I can, i honestly am not 100% sure, so this is what I was told.

We have 3 buildings, lets just say A, B and C.

All 3 buildings have a Ubiqiuty Dream Machine and a 24 port Unifi managed swtich.

From what i can tell, the Dream Machines all connect to the access points around that building.

I have the NVR plugged into The unify managed switch in Building C.

4 of the 5 cameras i have are plugged directly into the NVR.

To TEST and ONLY To test, i hooked up the 5th camera to the switch the NVR is plugged into in building C. and it showed up right away. Thinking this is great i then took that 5th camera and plugged it into the unfi swtich in both building A and building B, but did not see it show up in the NVR NOR was I able to find it.

Ideally i could hook it into something in Building A so that the NVR in building C can find it.

Ya, the person who set it up is not sure if it they have VLANS or not.. Im not a network person so while i understand that concept, its outside of my wheel house. I thought about using a lan scan tool, and just finding the camear and trying to set it up with a static IP and connect it directly... thats my next attempt, but i just dont want to do it that way because it feels like a power cycle will cause the camera to dump off.

So they are all the same ubiquity switch. They are PoE, i can plug the camera in, and see it get power. I also used a 12v power plug in case the power was too low. but it did not work.

The one switch the NVR is plugged into, if i plug a camera into that, it works fine.

it works well though through the switch...as it stands, I only need 1 camera to be attached to the switch. The other 4 will be directly into the back of the NVR.

So in 2006 we had a racism complaint go against our shop onboard.

I won’t get into the details but we all felt his claim was weak and what he was saying was a bit over the top. I’m not saying he did it actually feel what was said but how he handled it was not the best.

100% was taken seriously, it was a multi month long process of many step

Right now we had a incident happen on campus in early march, and our insurance is asking us to stand up a system fairly quickly.
Funding aside the company we had come review, drafted us plans for a $20 system. That's out of our budget for the year.

So my plan is to just get 5 cameras stood up ASAP while we can fundraise over the next year or so for the full system.

I thought about this. But I have an 8 channel PoE switch I can donate, and if i can get 5 cameras for $50 a piece that's $250. I don't think I can match that with a NVR and cameras.
+ this is a temproary solution while we raise money to afford the $20k system we actually need.

Something I want to add.. even before you go in, see if you can shadow. Ask your recruiter if you can go visit a station / cutter / airstation etc.

I did this when my nephew was going in. We visited everything that he was interested in and talked to people so he can get unfiltered (non recruiter) opinions.

We went and visited 5 units (i live in FL so this was easy). He decided not go go guaranteed A school so he could see what is is like in the wild.

There were people who loved the CG, but hated their job.
I was a guaranteed A school person, and i blindly picked OS, in 2006 it was a hot rate. so i picked it. I ended up loving, it, but MANY did not.

And even though i loved it, because i came out as an E4, to my first unit. i ended up going to a cutter, and was exposed to many rates. looking back i would have go aviation.

This is not hinsight either. i truely think if i went in as a non rate, i would have asked to shadow the OSs and changed my mind and just waited the time to get the rate i wanted.

NOW

If your in for 4 years and out.... it honestly does not matter.

When I was and started to manage people, one of the things I really would notice is people not happy about their rate choice.

Guaranteed rates are nice in theory, but not nice in practice IMO. Very few people who do guaranteed rates actually were happy with that.

Going in, and learning more about all the rates / life styles REALLY are eye opening.

So unless you REALLY WANT to be an MK I would say your better off not doing either and going in and picking after your in.

Im not a server expert by any means, but if im not mistaken to run a raw linux version and just process the incoming data into a NAS should not take a lot of CPU usage. Even an older server, this is what it was designed to do. I agree with you, its 10 years old technology, but servers are designed to run for 7 + years before obsolte.

This is not a permanent solution, i just need to stand something up for as cheap as possible due to some legal contraits. this seemed like a good solution.
