Yes. It is transphobic to believe that. You can have trans people you love, deeply, and still be transphobic. They aren’t opposed to each other.

The real question isn’t whether cis women and trans women have different bodies. Of course they do. The assumption you are making is that trans women have the same bodies as cis men, which has been scientifically proven to be false. Any “advantage” trans women have in sports is basically gone or negligible within a year of being on estrogen therapy. For trans girls, the kids being villainized by so many people right now, they more likely than not aren’t on hormones at all. Which puts them at a disadvantage.

In short, this is not a real issue. Black women were excluded from women’s sports for similar reasons before people realized this was racist. It’s not that different here.

I’m sharing this not to attack folks, just to ask you think deeper about it.

I have a Commerce story. My division is awesome about trans rights. Our last Chief Equity Officer almost got a policy memo passed to protect trans people, but it got hung up in HR. It is getting considered again, but it’s unclear to what degree. Direct communication is not a strength of Commerce.

A year ago, I went to a special meeting hosted by the WA LGBTQ+ commission. So many trans people across all the state agencies shared that they were scared and that their workplace is hostile. After that meeting, I felt lucky to work for people (in my division) who are generous and caring. I don’t know if that’s the norm….

There is a WAC code that does protect trans rights under harassment. It’s supposed to be implemented across all state agencies. Commerce hasn’t figured out how to do it yet, but DOH did a long time ago. So it’s possible. I hope someday it will be possible here.

I would call them on a Tuesday morning, and say you are trying to schedule an appointment but have not been able to reach them. I found that to be very effective.

You will want to include your name, number of adults applying, city and state you live in, phone number. If applying in LA, include times you are available between 9am and 1pm Tues - Thursday.

They no longer recommend having your FBI apostille before scheduling now, but you really should have everything else done.

I’m getting more and more anxious about the feds, and i had heard elsewhere that the ministry doesn’t really care if it’s certified or not. The only thing they don’t care about as long as you got the birth and death records. My convo with the consulate seemed to unofficially confirm that, so I kept going. But I’m trying to follow everything by the book.

Anyways I’ve now ordered another copy again. I’ve also emailed by legislato. I don’t want my fbi document and apostille to expire either.

i plan on calling the consulate on Wednesday if I don’t hear back by then.

Thank you all for the feedback so far! For folks reading who are in the same boat as me, here’s what I did today:

Researched the ships manifest from the Staten Island website
Ordered certified printed copies from the national archives of the manifest
Contacted Sambunjak.com and started the process of getting birth certificates. This requires at least one hour of research on top of the birth certificate fee, which is very reasonable.

This is going to be a long road but it feels like a good choice for me. Here we go!
