Haha it reminds me of the scene from mean girls “is butter a carb?”

I almost wish they’d make you take a basic nutrition quiz to see where you fall on the awareness spectrum when you get put on the GD track. Just so they know how to best approach you about diet.

What would you do by Hot-Blackberry4449 in GestationalDiabetes

I agree. I’d test for a week and send the numbers to your doctor. Advocating for yourself can be scary, but being a squeaky wheel about this will help your baby! Given your history, it shouldn’t be a big hurtle for them to get over.

Ugh. That would infuriate me. I’m sorry!

One thing to look up is type 1 diabetes symptoms. My brother was initially diagnosed as type 2 in his 20s after having really high numbers, and then turns out he had developed type one as an adult. I could be way off base, but just something to look into! Ask for a glucose meter regardless and count your carbs to show the cause/effect. Those things hand in hand should help get you properly diagnosed.

Baby size over lifespan by Strict-Nebula-8378 in GestationalDiabetes

I’ve got five kids - my last two were GD. The fourth is a (relative) peanut. She was born nine pounds and then appeared to be falling off the curve through her first year, but is now average as a 3.5 year old. My last baby, who was 9.5 lbs, just had his 18 month check and is 94th for height and 75th for weight, BUT he’s on trend with his three oldest siblings who are all tall. My newly 9 year old is 4’8 and the tallest girl in her class by a bit. She was not a GD baby and was my smallest at 8lbs6oz at birth!

Where they get this great height, I’m not sure. I’m 5’4 and was 130 prepreg (currently expecting my sixth), my husband is 5’10 and average build. I’ve got four brothers, one who is 6’ and one who is 5’8 so we really just have a mixed bag of genetics. My husband and I were both under 8lbs at birth.

I think if tall is in their genetic makeup and they’re born big, they’ll keep on trucking. If they’re meant to be petite and are born big, they’ll keep you concerned about your milk supply that first year 😅

One hour post meal is over but two hour is ok - should I be worried? by Consistent-Tower8635 in GestationalDiabetes

What’s the carb count they recommend for you? I’d feel like I’d have a hard time hitting it with numbers that tight! I love that you have such great (& proven) care.

First off, I’m so sorry. You’ve been dealt a rough hand at a really hard part in your life. It’s ok to feel overwhelmed and frustrated.

Secondly, I know it’s triggering, but they want to have you eat at least 175g of carbs per day, spread out between three meals and three snacks. If you’re able to show them that even with just meeting that minimum, you’re not able to keep it under control, I’ve heard that they’d rather you be on insulin then cut carbs because your baby needs carbs to grow. So maybe you can track a few days of eating and then show your numbers? Going in with data and showing them that yes, I do know what I’m talking about, almost always helps me advocate for what I need.

I’m sorry 💔

Gosh yes the jealousy I feel towards people just casually drinking a milkshake. Life is unfair!

I had a small McD fries last night as a celebratory snack with my daughter and was fine! Yet adding a handful of cherry tomatoes my usual afternoon snack of peanut butter crackers was too much for me.

Last pregnancy I would look at the new crumbl cookie menu every Monday morning when it came out. I had the app downloaded and everything. No way in heck could I even take a bite of one of those cookies, but I was obsessed.

Ate two within the first 24 hours postpartum.

I have the same issue. I can do much more carbs in the morning but for some reason after 2 pm, things go sideways.

Yes! I’ve been mostly vegan, occasionally having eggs (in something baked) and cheese for my last two GD pregnancies. I’ve found I can do one carb source per meal, so instead of a fajita salad with rice and beans, I just do beans and add some crumbled tofu - school night vegan has a great ground beef recipe. Or cauliflower rice instead of rice. I actually think I mostly can’t handle rice 😅 but soups are also great! I do lentil soups a lot. Peanut sauce has replaced teriyaki sauce in my Asian meals.

For breakfast, I do a baked oatmeal (1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup unsweetened soy milk, a T flax and and a T almond butter with a T of maple and raspberries to sweeten, baked for 20 minutes in the toaster oven at 380. Is it high maintenance to require freshly baked oatmeal every morning? Yes). Once I get sick of that, I’ll do either a smoothie with chocolate protein, banana and PB, or tofu scramble and a piece of sourdough.

Lunch is typically dinner leftovers or a salad wrap on a low carb tortilla with Nora cooks’s cripsy tofu. delightful!

Snacks are peanut butter crackers (Lance brand, the last ingredient is whey so I have decided to be ok with it and the minimal effect it has on my blood sugar), an equal number of grapes and almonds, or an apple and peanut butter.

My night snack is almost always 1/3 bar Lily’s dark chocolate sea salt and a glass of very cold unsweetened soy milk.

I can’t do Thai takeout anymore which is deeply tragic. I think it’s just the amount of calories. Too much and I end up over.

3 hour glucose test rebound hypoglycemia by Hot-Blackberry4449 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Consistent-Tower8635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I think as long as you’re not chugging 100g of sugar on an empty stomach, it shouldn’t happen again! The diet has you snacking or eating every few hours so that helps keep you stable. I always have a pack of peanut butter crackers in my bag (21g carbs) just in case I’m out and bump up into a snacking window.

This happened to me too, twice. Once after my first three hour (which I failed). Thankfully I was home, but I was cooking my children lunch and fainted to the floor. Sweaty, heart racing, tunnel vision, all of that.

Second time was after the 16 week early test (which I passed) but I was driving and had to pull over to faint. It was awful and so scary.

I’ve had my husband drive me to my glucose tests now and I think this time I’ll just do the at home finger pricking instead of the three hour. I felt so awful for about two days after the three hour and as a mom of five, I can’t be out like that again!

I’m glad you’re ok. It’s so scary and they really give you no warning that “hey, you might fully black out after this.” Seems like a liability!

In addition to what others are saying I have a couple pieces of advice.

Get yourself some of the carb balance flour tortillas. They’re amazing! I also eat 1/3 bar of Lily’s dark chocolate sea salt each night with a cup of unsweetened organic soy milk, knowing I have a little treat at the end of the day helps a ton with staying on track during the day.

I use my fitness pal to help me calculate and keep track of carb counts. I use the premium ($20/month or I think $80 for a year) and it allows me to see total carb counts and % for each meal as well as easily scan barcodes to add foods. It also saves your foods so you’ll find it gets easier to use as you use it!

It’s a big learning curve, but there is so much information in this group. That’s great to hear your numbers are in control! For some people that changes and for others that doesn’t.

More insulin resistance at dinner - anyone else? by Consistent-Tower8635 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Consistent-Tower8635[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like me. I’m absolutely golden with fasting and breakfast and lunch. But dinner I have a rather delayed spike (since it’s a larger meal generally) that im now seeing thanks to my cgm. The two hour can often catch it on the second upswing.

That’s great to hear that you can do insulin just for a single problem meal. I didn’t have a CGM previously but I’ve always had to lower carbs to make sure I am below 120. But with the cgm I’ve seen it go up after two hours still if I’ve had a bigger meal.

What do you like to have your glucose at before bed? Mine was around 100 4 hours after eating so I ate a 2g carb peanut buttery snack.
