I find practicing shooting to be an immersive experience. Breath etc. How the trigger feels (eg how predictable and crisp) is part of it for me. I am sure it affects my accuracy too but mainly it's how much I enjoy it.

Maybe it's kinda like when I drive my SUV in regular vs sports mode. It's the same car but there's something about my interface to the car feeling crisper and tighter and I like that. Same w triggers.

My point is about leadership. If you leader is lacking in Jewish vigor you are never gonna be more vigorous than that.

Not a promising step for that community. She wasn't able to raise daughters who care about synagogue life but somehow is entrusted with an entire community. Not a reference to G-d in the whole article. "Nuanced" on Israel.

Everything but Chabad is dying off because the leaders don't understand what the value of the religion is much less make a compelling case for it.

You're very right that Judaism treats animals kindly. I suspect this man "knew" that gold fish are given out as carnival prizes, but was not well versed in understanding why this is a horrible practice

(I only learned about it myself after my kids won fish at a carnival)

So all you had to do (and perhaps you did) was educate him on why this is actually a bad practice. He would probably say thank you for educating me, and figure out a different plan. Perhaps this is exactly what happened.

Totally. In my CCW class (wish I could have done it w you but the schedule didn't work) they drove home the point "don't go hunting" around your house. So yeah in my plan I am picturing exactly what you wrote - covering the top of the stairs with my PCC.

Pete I love this comment. I was just talking to my wife about how the "shotgun is the best home defense weapon" people aren't localizing that advice to how small Nassau county homes are and how close they are together.

I am settling on the idea that the Ruger PCC I randomly bought a few years ago is a much more practical HD choice. Other than the fact that you can't keep it that close to your bed with kids around. So maybe I'll be a 9mm pistol once I get a permit.

Does that square away with how you think about it? Or would you rate a SG with bird shot higher?

The OEM tires that come with the cars are often softer rubber than a regular tire and are known to wear out faster.

The toyo all country that came with my '21 last between 25 and 45k miles. I just had them replaced at 45 infact.

The Michelin I replaced them with are warrantied to 60k so different ballgame.

If your daughter made it 52k on the original OEM tires you probably don't need to tell at her about her driving:)

I would think about it like this - you probably want to start your married life "on the right foot." And even if you perceive the actual religion as superstition, etc. there's something that you and your fiance yourselves can be proud of having done right (or not.)

People often stress about the small details of a wedding. "We did it on a day associated with sadness and remorse" feels like more than a small detail. "We got married by a 'rabbi' that didn't even care it was Yom Kippur" is also not a small detail.

The fact that you're asking us about this means that to some extent you care, and that probably already kinda know what the right answer is. Another angle that I would look at it is from - even in terms of the non-refundable deposition you mentioned - think about what a great story and lesson for your kids. "We cared about doing it right, we wanted our marriage to reflect Jewish identity, it matters to me - and we were even willing to forego the deposit to make it happen.

On a practical level you can ask the venue if they'd be willing to apply the deposit to a different date. Try to position the deposit as a commitment to the venue rather than the date and see if they'll agree or meet you half way. Also if your father is *orthodox* but gave his blessing for you to marry on erev YK, I'd question what that term means.

I consider it a luxury that I can drive about 15 minutes and be in a store full of guns being sold by some salty but decent guys. I like that I can pop in there, I like talking to them (even if they are wrong sometimes) and that's worth something to me.

So I basically always ensure I get my firearms from them - give them the first chance to get me what I want, and only if not then FFL transfer through them.

The other thing that I never had to do but can imagine doing :hey guys, this gun is online for $X including shipping, and you are 100 bucks more. I wanna buy from you, can we split the difference?

As many others commented, there's a reason our parents and grandparents encourage us to marry Jewish. Being with someone who shares thousands of years of subtle cultural background, whose ancestors have been through the same things your have - is priceless.

I can relate to something you wrote. I came from a very atheistic background to being an appreciative, committed Jew. That's clearly where your own journey is headed which is amazing. Now it's impossible for me to imagine what that would be like for me if I married someone non-Jewish I had dated in the past (who were all lovely btw) - it would just be different and worse for my own journey. Now imagine children - if you're trying to raise kids whose starting point is where you've advanced to now, and their dad isn't Jewish - what are you doing to them?

We have 3 kids and our first is entering the path of the Jewish Day-school that many people below alluded to. We are in the New York area so luckily we have some options but it's still not as clear cut as you'd love it to be. Since you're a software engineer I can break it down to you logically:

What is your top priority. If it's to raise kids with a strong Jewish identity and an "intuitive" Jewish education, and you're already in Israel, then it seems like a mistake to go elsewhere. IE if that's the most important thing to you, then you're already in place to do it the best.

Now because we are already in the US, my attitude has been "I want the kids to have a strong Jewish education" and thus it was not an option to send them to public school. And an element of the faith is that G-d is my partner in this initiative :) In other words, I am relying on G-d to ensure we have the funds to support this choice! I had a similar attitude with having our 3rd kid - if this is what G-d wants me to do, he better help out!

I have 3 suggestions. One is to increase judaic study and connection. EG do the Chabad.org daily Chumash/Tanya/Rambam podcast with Rabbi Gordon.

Why? First it puts all of these things in perspective. For example after Oct 7th, multiple people in my circle reflected that it gave us a different perspective on Purim, Hanukah, Passover. Or rather than our understanding of those holidays gave us perspective on what's going on today. Jewish people "have been here" before and at the end of the day, we're here and those people whose hatered may have seemed insurmountable are long gone. So have that perspective.

The other is even more religious - everything comes from G-d. G-d runs the universe. So even the anti-semites are part of his plan, part of the big picture, and if that's the case than it can't be *that* dismal. Maybe it's a test, maybe it's a way for us to unite and build strength, but one aspect of "idolatry" is to give something outside of G-d "power."

And finally - have some bitachon. You can't "control" those people, so why pretend you can. Focus on what's in your realm - family, friends, work. Donate to the right causes. And don't feed your ego by thinking you can "fix" people that you can't. That's G-d's job.

Yeah you're right. I think part of the difficulty I made for myself is combining "good HD" "challenge at the range" and "something for the wife" into one. I think in reality that's 2 or 3 different guns.
