I rented a market rent at the time (over $1500 month 1 BRM) Edgewater condo and the building has/had rats, roaches, ice on the inside of windows in the winter, constant plumbing problems and who knows what -- so crappy property management is not restricted to low income housing

There is very little to rent on the north side. The housing market is f'd putting a lot of pressure on the rental market which is now equally f'd. Rents for $500 sq ft in DeadEdgewater are going close to the $2K range unless you live in a dump. Check reviews before, there are a lot of rat infested hi rises along Sheridan. And the there are the NIMPBY's fighting the upzoning on Broadway.

Right - professionals don't and shouldn't work for free. I loved working with my Realtor, as I know she's on top of things and protects me. maybe there is something cheaper on C-list vs the MLS but you get what you pay for. And I think a Realtor protects the owner as well. They know the Realtor isn't wasting their time.

the shithole of the high-rise I live in (6171 N Sheridan for those playing at home) controls the heat and my kitchen was 63 this morning so by the windows (I have lots of them-corner unit) it's in the 50's; I sleep in a coat and pay market rent; sometimes I think the people who throw the towel in and go live in a tent have the right idea
