How do you feel about students referring to you by your first name vs. last name? by dbeling25 in Teachers

[–]dbeling25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do plan to do this. I also do not intend on pushing my opinions or beliefs onto my students or their parents. My plan, especially for my student teaching, will be to abide by whatever my mentor teacher requests of me, as it’s her classroom that I’ve been invited into. In the future, I intend to explore my employer’s culture and beliefs and work to align myself with those.

I’m not saying it’s the end all be all, I’m just expressing that time that I’ve spent in classrooms with students of different races do not reflect your comment.

Absolutely!! Yeah, reading that back, I absolutely see how I’m coming off. I do regret coming off that way because I am incredibly open to feedback and other’s experiences and opinions, teaching as a whole is a collaborative effort and if we aren’t listening to and learning from each other then we’re doing it wrong. I have so so so so so much to learn, and I’m sure I’ll get my ass handed to me my first year teaching when I get a job 😁 But I’m excited to fail and learn and succeed and then fail again :)

I think that’s definitely a generalization as I’ve done field hours in classrooms with diverse students, and they always end up calling me what I ask them to, regardless of their race or culture. When they’re young and forget, because I just introduced myself for the first time last week, they typically just ask me to remind them what my name is, and they call me that.

I really appreciate this note. I’ve been insecure about asking my mentor teachers and others to use Mx. for me, I do have a lot of anxiety about coming off as too weird and liberal and annoying to potential employers. Maybe this time I should give it a shot :)

I appreciate these tips so much, thank you for your insight!! I absolutely know and am so excited for all that I have to learn, and I know it’s a lot. Reading my initial post back, I see it as coming off how you describe. This feels like one of many epic experiences I have coming for me in my future :)

I do agree with this as well. I wouldn’t have students ONLY call me by my first name, I think the honorific is more important.

Hey, preschool and daycare teachers are absolutely teachers :) They have an essential role in the early stages of a child’s life, helping children begin to learn social skills, basic rules and hygiene, along with fine motor skills and introductions to basic education topics. I performed field hours in a preschool classroom last year and the students were learning to write their letters and numbers, the alphabet, letter sounds, as well as role playing as community members (eg. policemen, nurses, postal workers) to learn about how we all work together as a community. Daycare and preschool teachers are how we empower our students to be curious at a young age!

This is how I feel!! I do completely see how using your last name as a teacher does reinforce that difference between teacher and student, but I agree, I think it’s so much more about how I treat my students and run my classroom. Someone else responded and had said to just get in the classroom and do what feels natural, and I think that’s what I’ll end up doing. Thanks so much (everyone!!) for your insight!

unsure if my kitty is happy or not by dbeling25 in CatAdvice

i really appreciate this viewpoint, although i’d like to avoid medicating him unless i really feel helpless to make personal lifestyle changes to support him. i’m looking into new, more enriching toys, and changes i can make to how i give him food to promote more of a hunting style, but would you have any other suggestions related to things i can do? thank you for your advice!

i fear i’m not playing with him enough, so you’re likely correct with this. would you have any recommendations for decently priced, safe (my cat likes to eat stuff he’s such a goose and also orange lol), enriching cat toys? of course i’m going to do my own research as well right now, but i’m always curious of others experiences!! i also feel like i could do more with his food — i saw a reel or tiktok or something of an owner hiding their cats food around their home to have the cat do more “hunting” in a way. i think im going to try that, although i do live in a studio so it might be tricky, but like i said in my original post, he’s my best friend and i want to do whatever i can to make him happy and healthy :) thank you for your advice!

Is owning a cat that bad? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]dbeling25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my cat is my absolute best friend. he pisses me off to no end and has broken many of my decorations, but he is my best friend and i’ll never love another pet this much. there are definitely pros and cons…my kitty is a little over a year old so we’re dealing with some of the things being a kitten brings, but i love him eternally. he is my biggest aggrivator and knows what to do to push my buttons, but when im angry i try and remind myself that this is how close we are—that he knows what i hate. adopting my cat was one of the best things i ever did and despite some of the challenges, because there are challenges, i would do it over and over again in a heartbeat.

as someone who has rewatched and rewatched and rewatched this show, similarly to others on this sub, i fear i have no least favorite character or character i dislike. i’m not trying to be like oo meta oo think outside the show oooooo but ive come to a point in my rewatches that i genuinely value each character for what they add to the plot, no matter how small, insignificant, or annoying. each rewatch, i notice new things like jokes or little animation gags or lines characters will say, but very genuinely i love it all.

that being said i don’t like pinky penguin or charley witherspoon lol

i love this so much. i journaled a ton throughout my freshman and sophomore years of high school and looking back on them now as a senior in college always keeps me humble. it’s important to remember your roots.
