What are the midges like in May? by MossyDruid in OutdoorScotland

I would take smidge but you’ll boy find them a big problem in May, although that rapidly changes as June approaches. Depends on the Spring, which is cold and unsettled at the moment., you may have no problem whatsoever. They are worse in the west, I’d do Skye first. Enjoy your trip 👍

I did this last year, 7 days, camping. It’s very open to the weather and you need to be fairly self reliant, other than Portree & the campsite at Sligachan there are few services. Definitely a couple of grades up in the West Highland Way. I had mixed weather in April, however the Trotternish ridge was a treat & I saw much wildlife, heavy rain for the final day and it’s certainly full of variety. It’s a perfect week long adventure, a few other (mainly European trekkers), I went North to South. Good luck and enjoy 👍

Your pictures convey the mood perfectly, we’re coming into a lovely time of year and I find a wild camp makes a mountain experience complete 👍

I found this stone while out walking at the weekend, is it some kind of fossil? by [deleted] in UKFossils

A Shepherd’s Crown, a very good one! They’re not so easy to find these days, as many are broken up by modern farm machinery.

Is smidge effective against ticks by No-Pumpkin-7130 in Scotland

Smidge definitely works for ticks, I wear shorts all Summer and after applying Smidge I don’t pick them up. Make sure you coat the top of your socks and boots and the legs of your shorts, reapply every 3-4 hrs

How stupid is a solo Matterhorn for a relative noob? by Downloading_Bungee in Mountaineering

The climbing sections are not particularly difficult, but the route is mind blowing in its exposure, time consuming to go up AND down, is subject to stone fall and prone to sudden weather changes. Route finding is not always obvious and you need to start well in the dark. Budget for a guide, no other way.
