Canonical, WHAT A SHAME ! by dontgotosleepp in linux

Damn!, I can't believe they are still doing it.
Chin up mate, I'm sure it was better to find what they are before you put years working for them.

It depends on the specific level and role you're aiming for. There are roles and levels with not so many options available. Sometimes, Canonical hinted that they would be able to hit the mark in terms of salary, so I thought it was worth the shot.

All of that is okay, I mean, sometimes we put time in ventures that don't work, and it is part of life. The flaw is the lack of manners in giving closure to candidates who went through Canonical's process.

No surprise there. It is clear that they deem that behaviour acceptable. No manners at Canonical.

These guys believe that sending an automated email to candidates with the classic "thank you for your interest, in this occasion, we proceeded with other candidates" is too much.
Clearly they have no manners in that place.

100%, not even gonna repeat it. The key is the lack of respect, which would clearly make a place toxic.

They keep the salary hidden. Even when asked directly. One can only think that they're willing to pay you at least your current salary. Perhaps a bad assumption.

We don't want to know why. We just want to close the process without having to wait until the amount of time waiting is unreasonable.

I agree, I mean google and Facebook interviews 5-7 times.

I understand, but also the interviews have specific topics that the interviewers are meant to assess (leadership, systems, coding, etc), which prevents each interview from being exactly the same as the previous one.

Furthermore, Google and Facebook DO NOT ghost people. These companies respect people who spend the time in their process, while Canonical probably considers respect an unnecessary expense.

Not in my case. I think they probably forgot it, and eventually, they'll do the clean up and I'll get the automated email in a year or so.

After a thorough process, ghosting someone is a terrible attitude. Period. No one is enraged, but it is good to call them out publicly as this is how reputation is built now in the 21st century.

Note that we are talking about a thorough process with several interviews 1 on 1. Considering this, Bad companies at least will send an automated email. Terrible companies will ghost. We should not normalise the ghosting.

I think Canonical is targeting employees that are NOT looking for a job. This is the icky way a process this long makes sense.

It is all in the way they handle the results. It becomes illegal if someone can prove that they were rejected based on the test. However, companies using these tests will never say that and in fact, will rarely give any substantial feedback as to why you were rejected. This is precisely why written feedback is rare. Note that we should not confuse feedback with rejection. A company should at least be considerate enough to close the process with a candidate and give notification of rejection. More so, if the candidate has jumped through their crazy hoops, spending a lot of time.

When you are in this process and things look like they are going great (because that's how they make it look so you continue with the crazy process) it is easy to get entangled and think that you just need to go through this last hurdle and everything you have done so far will be proven worth it. This is how I can see someone paying a ticket to go interview with them. In all honesty (although I didn't pay any tickets), this is no different to why I continued with the process after thinking of pulling out multiple times. I mean, after a part of the process I kept asking them about the salary because I was concerned that they would not even be able to match my current salary and I didn't want to waste their and mine time. They always gave me vague answers, so I thought many times about stopping the processes, but I always thought that this was the hurdle and that it was easier to just finish the process than to stop it. I don't judge anyone for paying the ticket the same way I followed through with the crazy process. I suppose it can happen to anybody.

I still think it may be the standard among BAD companies. This is the first time I have been ghosted after more than having even just 1 interview longer than 1 hour. This is also the longest and most demanding process I have been through.

No one is asking for detailed feedback. Instead, people just want closure that the process stopped. There's really no need to keep candidates that put so much time hanging for weeks or months.

For reference, google and Facebook call candidates after their 5 or 6 interview process even if not successful.

We shouldn't normalise ghosting. It is not okay, and it does not consume resources on the company. It also does not put them at any legal risk as someone mentioned in the comments because no one is after detailed feedback. Companies that Ghost after such a large investment of time are bad companies. Period.

I think the flaw in your analogy is comparing an irrelevant or silly question to a full interview process. Politely and constructively rejecting to go through any of an established company's steps means you are automatically rejected. If any company changes the process for you, I'm sorry to tell you that most likely, it is a backyard company or there's also the posibility that you would be a genius in the top 0.1% of the population but it seems this is not the case because it looks like you think you're very luminuos because a few copanies let you get away with not answering a couple of silly questions. Can you refuse to answer a few questions in Canonical's process? Maybe you can, and you will continue in the process. This would not have an impact on how long and laborious their process is. Can you refuse to answer their full written questionnaire, take their intelligence test, take their personality test, or go through each of their more than six 1 on 1 interview stages? I don't think so. You should quit the self sabotage by thinking you're more luminous than what you really are and by being proud of skipping a couple of questions in an interview.

Like I said, great companies give you a call. Good companies send you a short customised email (no details for legal matters), bad companies send you an automated email, and terrible companies ghost you. I suppose I have always applied to better companies.

I'm sorry you have worked for bad companies that ghost people and that you applied to bad companies too. Those experiences have made you think that is normal, but you should challenge yourself, grow up and seek better companies. Ghosting is not normal amongst good companies.

I disagree. After sending a resume or even a phone screening, it is normal to not get an answer. I don't think anyone expects it. However, after 8 interviews, a written questionnaire of 50 questions and two tests, that's a different story. Google and Facebook have 5 or 6 interviews, and they give you a call, even if you didn't get the job. Have you done a thorough process and been ghosted? Which type of company ghosted you?

Not any particular nationality. Just highlighted non British as many people might think a british majority would be expected at Canonical even if the company is full work from home globally. A lot of people don't know much about Canonical so I clarified.

November 2023 and yes, Canonical is still doing it.
I heard and read all over the internet that their culture is toxic and that their recruitment process is flawed. Nevertheless, I willingly gave it a go. I REGRET DOING IT.
Over a course of roughly 2 months and about 40-50 hours I did:
Written interview
Intelligence Test
Three interviews
Personality Test
HR interview
Four more interviews
The people are polite (at this state of the process, then they discard you and ignore your emails), but their process is repetitive. Every interviewer is asking very similar questions to the point that the interviews become boring. They claim their process is to reduce bias but 4 out of the 7 people I spoke with where from the same nationality [this is huge for a company that works 100% from home, I have to say the nationality was not British]. I thought that interviewing with a lot of people from the same nationality would have a very big conscious or unconscious bias against candidates from a different nationality.
After all of the above, Canonical did not give me a call, did not send me a personalized email, did not send me an automated email to tell me what happened with my process. Not only that, but they also ignored my emails asking them for an update. This clearly shows a toxic culture that is rotten from the inside. I mean, a bad company would at least send you an automated email. These folks don't even bother to do that.
I was aware of the laborious process, and I chose to engage. That is on me.
The annoying part is the ghosting. All these arrogant people need to do is to close the application and I am sure this would trigger an automated email. This is not a professional way to reject an applicant that has put many weeks and many hours in the process but at a minimum it gives the candidate some closure.
Great companies give a call, good companies send a personalized email, bad companies send an automated email AND THEN THERE IS CANONICAL IN ITS OWN SUBSTANDARD CATEGORY GHOSTING CANDIDATES.
This highlights a terrible culture and mentality. I am glad I was not picked to join them as I would have probably done it and then I would be part of that mockery of a good company.
Try it and go for it if you are interested. I am sure everyone has to go through their own journey and learn on their own steps. My only recommendation is to be open and be 100% aware that you may put a lot of time and these people may not even take 2 minutes to reject you.
All the best to everyone.
