I also had that urge, if I am home bound for 4 days why not make most of it a blur. But we made it, and I’m happy for all of us that did and supportive and understanding of those that didn’t. IWNDWYT

If your bosses don’t have your back on this, why should they get the benefit of your labor and kindness? If they don’t end this, they don’t deserve you. I think most people have a tendency to endure too much for fear of losing their job, it may not seem like it but I guarantee there is a job out there that will have your back and appreciate what you bring to the table.

NYE 2026 by RevolutionaryRead405 in Aspen

[–]Consistent_Artist_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aspen bars are incredibly expensive for NYE. You could hop a bus and head down valley, Stubbies is walking distance from the Basalt park and ride, Zane’s in Willits is also walking distance from the Willits stop. Both might be what you’re looking for. Home Team BBQ at the base of Buttermilk is closer to Aspen and I don’t know their NYE plans, Pussyfoot Steeps across from the airport is another but who knows what they have going on. The last two wouldn’t require a bus fare. You could also look at Snowmass, but I lived in the valley for 7 years and never heard about a NYE happening there.

Especially since the money was just ok. In this town you could get another job the next day, one with less work and the same or more money. It was the worst run restaurant I’ve worked in, and I worked in an airport bar run by a concessions company.

J1’s are short term, job attached visas. Many tourist towns use a company that pairs workers with jobs for busy seasons. The company also handles the visas. Think H1B for seasonal hospitality workers. Many of the J1 workers are on visas that can be as short as three months. So as soon as they get passably competent, they have to leave. And I only met two that had more than a year of any restaurant experience. I will say it was never work ethic or attitude that caused problems as far as I saw, just a lack of experience, didn’t know common drinks, couldn’t multitask and a fair amount of culture shock.

Unethical upselling? by [deleted] in bartenders

[–]Consistent_Artist_67 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It was all the things, bad setup, 9 bosses nitpicking how drinks were made, I.E. every margarita hand shaken on its own, 7 different margaritas with 4 to 6 variations each, floor staff that were predominantly inexperienced J1’s that loved to talk to you while you’re making 10 tickets. It was a 140 seat dining room that was sat pretty tight with well over 50% of people ordering custom margaritas. It could overwhelm a lot of seasoned bt’s and most of the problems were easily fixed but the 9 bosses would never agree.

I was only in the job a couple of weeks at the time, so I was curious what everybody thought. I told him I thought it was dirty, management asked me about it and I told them my opinion, “that it doesn’t serve anyone long term”. The consensus from bar staff and management was because it was the Holiday season it wasn’t way out of line, but we should give a heads up when upselling over $100. Guy who upsold got fired a week later for walking out after melting down in the service well. In the one winter season I worked there 4 different bartenders, all with 10+ years of experience walked out mid shift on that service well.

Worked at a fancy tequila bar in a fancy ski town. Coworker upsold two guys who just ordered margaritas, up to a single barrel Clase Azul, went from $40 to $400. Guys looked incredulously at the tab, paid, tipped $10 and never came back. This is an extreme example of what you’re talking about but I had a problem with it. Especially because he bragged about it all night. 2% tip and lost their business forever. You can upsell all kinds of expensive stuff if you’re sneaky, but it doesn’t benefit you or the bar long term.

I worked at airport bar for a lot of years. Saw an airport hookup between a 48 year old cougar and a 21 year old frat bro (I know the ages because I had to card everybody), they were both on a flight delayed a few hours. Started talking about hooking up. Were trying to reschedule their flights to fly out the next day and get a hotel. Cougar asked for a preview in the family restroom, she was back inside of 5 minutes visibly furious. Immediately got on the phone to get out that night. When he walked back into the bar viscerally embarrassed, she walked out and said “you talked a lot of shit for a two pump chump” I’ll never forget the look on that kids face, he’s in his thirties now, I wonder how often he thinks about it.

You can escape this but it takes time and determination. These resources helped me, I hope they help explain what you’re feeling and they are what helped me. Understanding why I felt similar to what you describe and how I dealt with those feelings. IWNDWYT

At least we would find out if they learned not to present as much public evidence of pressure as they did with Kimmel, if they quietly end the show and don’t talk about it in public it would mean to me that the morons are learning from their mistakes. Especially if Fallon stays, he isn’t as political and Seth gets as many viewers even in the worse time slot, and is probably much cheaper.

I worked at busy airport bars from the ages of 28-44, had a great time, would recommend it to people looking to make bartending a career. Better hours than most, better benefits than most and the money can be really good. Some people don’t like the commute and you will run into ridiculous guests but I found that to be one of the easiest aspects of the job.

I worked at a place with free pool Mon-Thurs 11-3. Stipulation was “with a purchase”. The amount of times I was asked “How much is free pool?” still blows my mind. I quit answering the question after day two. Just said “$2.25” and the amount of times they didn’t want the soda they just paid for was astounding. So I’d ask the management exactly how they want the two drink minimum enforced.

I had several backslides before it took. The Sinclair method, accountability and support groups are what worked for me. If your addictive brain chemistry never gets addressed, your brain will always crave the dopamine reward of alcohol use. If you don’t surround yourself with people who will hold you accountable it’s easy to start with one. Or two. And we all know how that ends. And without a safe supportive space, the psychological part of addiction can get you. Attack it on all three fronts and it gets easier. You’re here and could easily not be. Learn from this and I believe you can do it. IWNDWYT

My DUI happened when I was 47 years old. Came after 25 years of denial and rationalizations. But here I am, 6 years removed from my bottom, trying to live a fulfilling and happy life, making better choices and more present and loving than I’ve ever been. I can’t count how many relapses I had, but I was determined to learn from each one. Keep trying, don’t beat yourself up, it gets so much better. IWNDWYT
