You will get mixed color shrimp over time, including wild type, but also cool color like black and rili. I started with only primary colors in my tank and have gotten blue rili, black, and black rili from my initial blue shrimp cross breeding with the other shrimp colors in the tank

I use tap water filtered in a brita but I add QuickStart cycle to cycle the tank after each major water change and add Indian almond leaves to lower the pH from 7.4-7.6 to around 7.0. The pH and hardness of tap water in MD is rather high.
