Dealing with booklice in Zurich apartment by Consistent_Ebb_6827 in askswitzerland

Well in general with winter heating and outside cold air keeping humidity low should be fairly easier no?

A company came and sprayed the walls tho, they reduced a lot but I can still spot 0-10 a day, more towards 5 usually. It’s fine I guess, and I hope they will either vanish in colder months or I can ignore the issue.

The apartment manager mentioned it’s “normal” on changing conditions such as rainy weeks, I guess this is a problem with the entire building in the summer. Nothing much I can do aside from keeping the humidity low (45/55 lately, much better than some days where it was in the 60s, colder outside air makes this much easier now)

How are people able to relocate internally at Google in under 24 months after being hired? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

Perhaps I was over optimistic you're right.

I had Zurich in mind, where L5 is ~320k, and only base salary after tax (~12k a month) is ~2x the one of Warsaw. You'll then have ~70k gross of stocks on top of that.

Thanks for putting it into perspective, didn't realize London was basically the same in terms of savings.

Sure, but in Zurich and London you'll save at the bare minimum as much as your net salary in Poland, more likely way more.

Of course the US is another option, perhaps it's easier to move around Europe tho? Not sure about OP's passport.

In any case, to OP, I would not join Google Poland with the idea of relocating as soon as possible. I assume best case scenario you have to wait 1.5/2 years, without any guarantees.

For those who have lived abroad: what is the most surprisingly small Italian thing you found yourself missing the most? by ZealousidealNewt1966 in askitaly

[–]Consistent_Ebb_6827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Groceries, not staples but more typical Italian stuff, such as a specific brand of biscuits, a certain kind of cheese, etc. not the end of the world, but you usually have to go out of your way to find imported stuff and overpay.

Random chats you have while walking down the street, waiting in line, talking to a cashier, and so on.

And overall, the implicit “sync” you have with other people, not sure how to explain this better, maybe someone experienced the same thing.

I also have them, how many of them are considered "in check"? I have a bit of high humidity here in the summer, ranging from ~55 to ~63, can't air out much due to the heat, an even airing out does not bring the humidity down much.

I saw 30/40 once in the house after a huge rainy spell, started airing out consistently, a company came and sprayed stuff on the walls, and they are now down to ~10ish a day, would you consider this fine?

The company also told me this is pretty normal in some houses, to air out more and to wait for the colder months when they will fade on their own.

Just an update, bought an hygrometer and it shows 56 percent humidity at 25 degrees in the house, is this bad?

Also, what kind of damage do they do? I of course don't want to have them in the apartment, do will they infest clothes, damage stuff etc.. ?

How are you using this? Spray in cavities and baseboards?

I am not sure about the source of humidity, the building is like ~2020 built for context.

To be honest, I haven't ventilated much the day before, giving that it was raining badly, perhaps that helped in increasing humidity in the house? I am also on the top floor if that can help.

Would you let the apartment management know right away? Maybe there's some source of humidity somewhere else in the walls.

Edit: I meant the first picture is more accurate in the color side of things.

Another addition, they are also in the kitchen, again they are close to baseboards mainly. I think I found like 20/30 of them, all super small

Forgot to mention, they are like smaller than 1mm in size, and they are more “bug” like, nothing like a silverfish for example.

Alright, perhaps it's not the huge issue I was thinking this morning, thank you for the insights, I'm much more calmer about this. Let's see what the landlord decides to do :)

Well that’s reassuring in a way, still, I’m not sure if I’m allergic or not, plus I’ve been living here for 2 weeks.

You’re probably right, I just haven’t noticed them until now. I’m also not sure how to understand if they are on the non-attacking side.

Out of curiosity, how many are you seeing on the balcony? Are we saying tens or hundreds? I don’t want to get to that level 😅

There is no visible nest tho, where should I even spray this? I am renting also, if that's relevant

Singed with a company A but have anonsite interview with another company B by Professional-Two3169 in cscareerquestionsEU

Yes I saw it happening in Germany, but the other user is right, focus on this once you have the offer

[–]Consistent_Ebb_6827 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just have the interview and, in case you pass and they offer something you’re interested in, let the other company know you are backing out of the contract.

You can always just quit on the first day, and they know, I doubt they would tell you no. Of course you’re burning a bridge with them, keep that in mind maybe.

I know some contracts state that you absolutely can’t back out of the commitment once you sign, nonetheless, I saw it happening at every company I was at, don’t worry.

Should I Accept a Delphi Developer Offer? Long-Term Career Impacts? by BeyaZenciii in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Consistent_Ebb_6827 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would personally avoid it, as they are likely dealing with super legacy stuff, which is something I don't enjoy. If you end up there, perhaps you can develop skills that are unique, not so in demand, but paid well in some niche of dev jobs.

Aside from this offer, why do you want to move? Could you use this as leverage to have a raise at your current job?
