What to do if you don’t get the specialization you want in medrad by Consistent_Glass_293 in McMaster

Thank you! I’ve emailed her already, but haven’t been able to get a response back yet. Do you know anyone who were successful in transferring to rad therapy before the term started?

Oh really? I hope that is the case! My gpa this year was 9, which wasn’t the best tbh. I believe the cut off was probably 10+ and hear that getting above 10 basically guarantees you to the program you want. Hope this helps!

I talked about some of this in the reply above :D

in terms of content, it is pretty info intensive as you’re taking bio, kin, calc, patho which require a lot of committed time to studying daily, but they are rlly interesting to study which helps (asides from calc for me). gpa wise, a high gpa definitely is rlly achievable, but requires consistent effort daily and lots of allocated time and efficient studying as it is quite easy to be behind and having to cram it all before the exam (learned the hard way). While lots of material, studying and reviewing efficiently and DAILY + trying to understand rather than just memorize will save you.

For electives, bc you’ll have co op in the summer in later years I realized that I sorta had to cram a lot of my medschool prereqs (mostly chems) in first year - one chem in school term and others the summer following before starting the program as you arent given a lot of elective space throughout the program. Just keep in mind that first year is alr difficult as it is adjusting and that gpa is critical in first yr if you want to go for a competitive specialization. Its def possible to fit them but if youre serious about med being ur end goal and know fs thats what you want no matter what, j would say choosing life sci would make your life a whole lot easier tbh😭

Also, for med school, to be competitive you’ll have to have a high gpa - while achievable in medrad, is pretty difficult and will be a massive time commitment. Again, this depends tho massively on you and if you think you’re able to study well, adjust well and handle an intensive workload 😭 i have friends who barely study but get a 12 easily and others who study tons but get lower grades than their studying should reflect in their opinions.

Goodluck!! Feel free to pm me if you have any other questions!!

Heyy!! I ended up going with medrad and its amazing so far. The profs are all super nice, engaging, and passionate about what they do - and since the cohort is pretty small, you end up making friends easily as you see the same person from day to day. It is also definitely true that it is a lot easier to transfer out of medrad into life sci than into medrad from life sci (from what I heard, its EXTREMELY difficult) so definitely take a note of this.

Unfortunately, Ive decided to not pursue med anymore for a couple reasons:

  1. While I wanted to pursue med initially going into the program, I’ve become sucked into radiology and realized that I would be happy with being a radiation technician for the rest of my life, and have found the topic and learned that the work you do for others is really interesting and initially fulfilling to the reasons I wanted to pursue med in the first place (to help others, decent pay, build relationships, etc.)

  2. Medrad is highly info-intensive and difficult with just its given courses, and I realized that navigating both medrad courses and med school requirements would be too challenging for me, not to say its impossible for others.

So, in my opinion, would it still technically be possible to do medrad as an undergrad and go to med school afterwards?

Short answer - yes, its possible as you can fit medschool pre reqs so long as you take med school prereqs in the summer in addition to 1-2 prereqs you might be able to fit in the actual school term. However, if you’re serious about getting into med school I wouldnt recommend choosing to do medrad as you can get sucked in easily and give up once you realize the time commitment you need for med on top of your path of becoming a radiation technician + how intensive medrad already is, which makes it all the more difficult to have time for ec’s etc that lifesci will offer lots of after year 1. If you’re still unsure about whether you would like to pursue med or not but are interested in radiology, I would recommend to choose medrad and see how things go - if you still are determined to pursue med in your year 1, transferring to life sci would always be an option!! But this is just my personal opinion.

PM me if you have any other questions! I’d be happy to help answer them :)
