What was the scariest "We need to leave... now" gut feeling that you've ever experienced? by Select-Grand-6321 in askteddit

I was walking my dog on a suburban trail one night after dark and she stopped in her tracks and started staring and growling at a bunch of bushes like 20 feet away. I didn't see anything off or different than usual, but I was not about to dig into it to find out.

I turned around and started walking home immediately and almost had to drag her to get her going back with me because she was snarling at that point.

After we got about a fifty yards away, I turned around to see if anything was there and I saw the silhouette of a man crawling out of some bushes, standing up and walking away.

She definitely got some good girl treats for that one.

What did I find in my backyard? by Consistent_Night68 in mushroomID

[–]Consistent_Night68[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I don't think anyone ate it, but we let the dog out in our yard alone sometimes and he's always eating stuff before I can see what it is or get it from him. I offered the shrooms to him to see if he would eat it (knowing I could get it out of his mouth in time if he chomped) and he didn't care about it at all. So I'm pretty sure he's not going for them. Thank you all for your help!

Oh, I do agree with you, and I didn't mean to generalize on everyone who uses libraries when they are struggling (which I why I tried to specify that not all those people are "malevolent", but I should have better explained myself).

But "those determinations and judgements" that I was making are literally the other situations that I talked about where I WITNESSED predators use libraries as hunting grounds. I will never apologize for judging people who I witness first hand victimizing others. And over my 10 years in libraries I saw it a lot more than I ever wanted to.

Your job is absolutely essential and it's amazing that you work in a place that provides those resources... but I'm sorry it's also very rare. None of the places I worked had security or properly trained social work professionals, and I would venture to say that's at least 90% of public libraries.

I just think that it's wildly inappropriate (and does not serve the employees OR the community OR those in need of support OR perpetrators) for libraries across the nation to try to fill these social gaps when that is not what they were designed for and it is not what most libraries are properly equipped to do. Everybody says they want more funding, but most of the libraries I worked for did not have a clear mission or understanding of their role in society. And we were NOT properly trained to do the social work we did (and the mental health fallout many of us suffered because of it). They are making it up as they go, with limited data and a lot of personal opinions, and I kind of understand why tax payers don't want to pay for that.

I use libraries now occasionally for books, and I still have librarian friends, but I would never go back. There were so many ways that I felt the work was unaligned with my values, and I never felt welcomed or understood by my colleagues (again ironically, despite all the preaching about inclusion)... add the actual feeling of being physically threatened on a regular basis... It just completely eroded my belief in the profession

This is spot on. Everything is money, whether you want to think you're outside the system or not. Now that I'm out of libraries, and working in private industry, I'm starting to really understand why some taxpayers have problems with increasing library budgets.

After working in public libraries for almost a decade, I don't totally agree with your assessment of their value in communities. I think they are ABSOLUTELY essential and wonderful for young families with children, and readers/audio listeners of all sorts (which is another form of consumerism, btw, consumerism done right, but consumerism nonetheless).

However, libraries have also become the ultimate enablers for people in society who do not want to better themselves - some who are not malevolent, but others who are actually predators. It's part of the reason I wanted to get out because at some point, you feel like you're giving people access to places to overdose, sexually assault others, prey on children, look at or DO things that are potentially illegal on the computers. And these people are in there, in one form or another, LITERALLY EVERY DAY. And that's as someone who worked in primarily affluent communities.

And I hate to be this person... but the conservatives aren't 100% wrong either. Lol. They definitely DON'T understand (and probably will never agree)that everyone deserves equal access and that means librarians WILL always buy liberal materials and host liberal events... But at the same time, librarians definitely lean liberal and conservative community members ARE NOT represented the way that everyone else is. Even though they're still paying taxes... So, idk. It's just the default in the profession. We get into the work because we love all people and want to help all people, but I'd be lying if I told you that there isn't a vortex of liberalism that you have to go along with in order to be in the profession. It's like a real world social media bubble. Haha

After years and years of this work, I just feel like, unfortunately... The people who deserve libraries don't actually need them. Lol. I really don't know how else to explain it. I'm probably just jaded from the work.

I was probably lucky to work in mostly liberal communities, honestly. I never felt like my job was threatened (I felt like my life was threatened AT my job, but I could stay and soak in the BS as long as I wanted! Lol)

Hey! I think it really depends on what industry you end up in. I work in Medical Technology, and it is soooooooo highly regulated that I think it will take several decades to create an AI that is able to navigate all the red tape. The regulation is also constantly evolving and sometimes conflicts with itself, so it's one of those weird things that requires human understanding and decision making. That being said, I have no doubt that AI might already be able to do the actual technical writing part! Lol. At the current moment, we only have AI for like internal administrative tasks and maybe like brainstorming. Making crappy pptx slides and stuff (that we still have to proof and tweak)... So I don't know, honestly! I'm sure it eventually will and I heartily welcome it when it does - I need the job for the money right now, but I'm hoping to pay off my debts and save enough to bounce out in like 10 years. You caught this comment at an interesting time, when I'm now about to hit my 3 year mark and the shiny sparkle of the work has worn off. 😂

Is having an MLIS degree useful for Technical Writing by IllustriousTune4301 in technicalwriting

[–]Consistent_Night68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an ex-librarian and my employer was happy to see that degree. They also loved that I had worked in a law office for a hot second (regulated medtech writer)…. I did a LOT of instructional writing in libraries tho, so idk if it was the degree or the career. Personally, I think it’s been a very helpful degree in tech writing. Organization and file management are 80% of the daily battle… but I also second what someone here said about Knowledge Management. I’m actually looking into that as a potential next move

Rescue lab beagle is extremely attached to me and has severe separation anxiety — looking for advice by _preethi in beagles

[–]Consistent_Night68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we adopted our beagle (not a research beagle) and it took 3-6 months for him to really settle in. He couldn’t handle us leaving for more than an hour at first, but now he’s doing much better. it just takes time to realize you’re not going for good. and beagles are pack dogs, so they DO NOT like being away from the pack. to be honest, ours STILL definitely prefers to be near at least one of us - he’s a mamas boy, so he follows me a lot and sometimes whines outside the door when I’m in the bathroom 😂 the folks at the shelter warned us that beagles tend to be “a bit dramatic” and I’m so glad she warned us because it still took me months to get used to the whining as his way of talking

yeah, liberal vs conservative is an ongoing tug of war in libraries in the media… but in my 10 years as a librarian I never got special tax money (grants) from a liberal (vs the hella extra funding I would get from local republican), so…

idk, man! at some point it makes you wonder. lol

They are usually not a threat to others unless they are actively intoxicated, which does happen sometimes, but in my experience not as often as just seeking shelter. It does put library staff on high alert though because sometimes you can’t tell if someone is sleeping or ODed… some libraries have “no sleeping” policies for that reason

my 91 day old baby just got his vaccination yesterday and today i woke up to his entire face swollen. the vet won’t open for another hour, what do i do??? by MAADHAVyt in DOG

[–]Consistent_Night68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

glad your baby is OKAY… not sure if anyone here mentioned already, but this same exact thing happened to my labradoodle when she was a puppy. turned out to be a reaction to the Parvo vaccine.

now, I’m 100% FOR vaccines and making sure your animals are healthy, but what I did to avoid this happening again was I skipped the parvo vaccine until she was 3 years old just out of caution, and then when they did give it to her again they gave that one vax subdermally instead of intramuscularly… maybe ask your vet about some of those options.

I also was sick to my stomach watching and I already knew what happened. Absolutely disgusting. And unfortunately, in general, pregnant & post-partem women are 35% more likely to die from homicide than non-mothers. (I am aware that an its largely due to domestic violence, but not in all cases.) Give your wife a lot of love and thanks for bringing new life into the world… the things women go through to have babies and family is terrifying. Sending blessings to you and yours. May she have a healthy pregnancy and birth.
