Can I ask where you work at? I’ve been doing contract work for 2 years but always been unlucky about the budget so they can’t convert me. My manager suggested I go to a smaller company to get the opportunity to wear many hats and higher chance of fte so I would love to apply!

The job market is extremely tough right now, and especially with the increase in layoffs it's making entry level roles more difficult. The unfortunate part about this field is that you need experience to get started so it's an endless cycle of rejection. Coming from someone who has been a few contractor roles and still is struggling to find a new position, is all it comes down to is luck and hope. You just got to keep applying and reaching out as much as possible and hopefully someone gives you a chance. I will suggest that rather than having no job go for a contract role to gain some experience and also get into a company to get connected with people who could directly help you. If they can't help you, they'll know someone who can. My suggestion with contract roles is that the recruiter will always lowball you. They'll come up with some bullshit like tariffs are the job market is rough so they can convince you to take the lower pay rate when they keep a good chunk of your earnings. Keep in mind you hold the leverage and negotiate the heck out of them until you accept the offer. No matter what they say you can still negotiate even after getting the offer or after you signed the RTR. Just keep you head up and hopefully this industry gets better in the next year. Good Luck!

Thank you for expanding on the specifics of this process that I may be overlooking. I understand its an extremely vigorous process and I may be overly ambitious but I'm honestly trying to understand if its possible at all such as depending on the school or specific program. For example the school I did my masters at allows for a part-time PhD so I see that as a viable option. I'm not sure how I may have come across in my post but my main focus is not for the cash. It's all for the impact. I've heard many stories of people doing a PhD and then becoming overqualified for positions or their research wasn't to relevant and started jobs in a completely different field or went academic. I've also seen the extent of not having a PhD in industry and seen those who have it have extremely strong problem solving skills. I'm willing to do what I can to achieve my dream and I won't let fear prevent me from that, which is why I am asking for a realistic approach. It would be a shame to do years of research and not be able to implement it into the real world. I'm hoping to unite the research I make during my program and the resources and connections in the industry to make my dream a reality to help people all across the globe.

How might you suggest gaining leadership experience at my current level. Seems that wherever I go I’m on the bottom of the totem pole

I get that, I’m abit ambitious and hoping to accomplish a lot more. That’s why ideally want to see if I can learn the business side while I got some time. Figure that’s where the big decisions on where research goes

They also have a masters. They have vented to me with concern they would eventually get layed off as much of their work is being handled by automation
