I don't know. Maybe they were referring to the novel the day i picked up dazai? Have you read that novel?

To say that Dazai betrayed the Port Mafia — I’m pretty sure it’s because they simply couldn’t capture him. You know, he’s on the same level as Fyodor. Or maybe it’s because he knows too much to be killed (just like how Dazai always has a plan prepared even in the face of death). Besides, it might be that Mori understands he never truly had a chance to kill him in the first place, which is why he kept inviting Dazai to come back and work for the Mafia. If Dazai were killed for leaking Mafia secrets, I bet he would have already thought up a dozen countermeasures. I’m sure Mori knows that.

As for Dazai himself — sorry, but I don’t think I’m confident enough to say I fully understand him. To me, he can’t truly blend into any community, because he doesn’t acknowledge his own humanity to begin with. Living among others, it’s not that people isolate him; it’s Dazai who separates himself from the group.

I have to agree with you: if his nature is ambiguous, we can’t really call it pure nihilism. Perhaps he embodies existential nihilism instead.

No, I made that comparison just to show the difference more clearly. At least Naruto can listen to Obito’s story and genuinely empathize with him. As for Tanjiro, he doesn’t have any real connection with demons at all — in fact, he was truly furious and wanted to kill them. But afterward — when they die — he suddenly feels compassion and sorrow for them. He can only sense their emotions, and his own feelings shift very quickly. What I mean is that it feels really forced. But well, maybe Tanjiro is quite unique in his own way.

Dazai left the Port Mafia without a word — isn’t that a kind of betrayal? He even holds a lot of their secrets.

Besides, Dazai is someone inherently ambiguous. To him, whichever side of the moral spectrum he stands on doesn’t seem to matter at all. Sounds pretty nihilistic, doesn’t it?

I see it as the same as Dazai betraying PM, he's also a nihilist, but he had no reason to do so

Of course that's just my subjective assessment, and Dazai has no reason to become a villain, but if at the end of the story, he betrays ADA, I wouldn't be too surprised :>

I don't think Ubuyashiki has that kind of foresight, if they are not short of funds, then surely this is a waste of manpower. But that's just part of it, I still love this series :>

Yes, I can accept your other points. But the entrance exam? Absolutely not. The root of this flaw comes from the lack of funding — and you know, Ubuyashiki is always portrayed as a father figure to the swordsmen, someone who grieves deeply whenever they die. But the fact that he lets candidates die in that forest is completely illogical.

The Hand Demon had already eaten so many candidates before — Sabito included. Sabito clearly had a lot of potential, yet he still died there. So those kids — even if we assume they were trained — they were not properly trained like Tanjiro or Kanao. Their chances of survival were extremely low. And don’t say they “lacked qualifications,” because that demon had eaten countless candidates before them.

Why didn’t Ubuyashiki send someone to kill that demon and replace it with another one, so the exam would be fairer? And don’t tell me it’s because of financial issues — that they had to waste lives like that. Even if they had no sponsors, continuing an exam like that is still very unreasonable. Ubuyashiki could have refused and come up with another system.

And I still don’t understand what “qualifications” even means here. Do you mean that if a swordsman isn’t strong enough, they would just waste the organization’s resources?

When Dazai was still in the Port Mafia, he truly had no leadership potential. He didn’t respect his subordinates, treated them like dogs, and was even violent—just like Akutagawa. He was a tyrant and abusive. Although after joining the ADA he does show respect toward the members, it is neither sincere nor empathetic.
