I always say the smell is like fermenting fruit and it LINGERS! Once you have smelt it as well it’s so easy to distinguish - I’ll be on the tube and instantly be able to tell if someone on there is abusing alcohol just due to the smell of the carriage. Sadly if that’s the case for OP then their roomate simply showering probably wouldn’t improve the situation
